Calvin, James "Speck" Funeral services for James “Speck” Calvin, age 83 of Lenox, Iowa, who died Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs, Iowa were held Saturday, December 29, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Methodist Church, Lenox, Iowa with Pastor Gerry Kahler officiating. Visitation with the family was held Friday, December 28, 2007 at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Lenox, Iowa. Burial with military rites were in the North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa. Memorials in his honor may be directed to James “Speck” Calvin memorial fund. Memories and Condolences may be shared with the family on our web page, www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

James “Speck” Coolidge Calvin was born in Chadwick, Missouri on November 4, 1924, and passed away peacefully on December 26, 2007 at the age of 83 following a short illness. His parents, Arthur and Laura (Lowe) Calvin, and his brothers, Hudson “Hud” and Jack, and sisters, Opal and Helen, preceded him in death. Surviving him are his loving wife of almost 64 years, Alberta; his brothers Willard “Gabby” of Jasper, Missouri, and Paul and his wife Vada of Lenox, Iowa; his sister Juanita of Lenox, Iowa; his son Doug and his wife Lynn of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin; Doug’s family, Todd and Karen Calvin and their children (Ryan, Bradley, Ashley) of Itasca, Illinois, Kristine (Calvin) and Richard Ray and their children (Richard, Deven) of Woodridge, Illinois, and Mitchell of Bettendorf, Iowa. Also surviving him are Hazel Stoaks, Lela Spoonemore and Wilma Gray, all of Lenox, Iowa, their families, and the families of Alberta’s departed brothers and sisters.

Speck’s life began with an interesting coincidence. Calvin Coolidge happened to be elected President of the United States the very day that Speck was born. Consequently, Speck was given the middle name Coolidge. The Calvin family moved to Lenox from the Missouri Ozarks when he was an infant, and he lived the balance of his life in Lenox. Speck attended several rural schools and graduated from Lenox High School in the class of 1943. During his high school days, Speck was an accomplished scholar and athlete.

Alberta and Speck were united in marriage on January 24, 1944. Shortly after their marriage, with the onset of World War II, Speck entered the United States Army, and served with distinction in an artillery unit until 1946. Following his military service, Speck and Alberta returned to Lenox, and Speck started working in the Calvin family trucking business. Their son and only child, Doug, was born in 1946. Speck was appointed the Lenox Postmaster in 1951 at the age of 25, and held that position until he retired in 1982.

Speck’s entire life was devoted to Alberta, his family, and his friends. He was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church, the American Legion - Post 250, the Lenox Rotary Club, and the National Association of Postmasters. Speck was awarded certificates for over 50 years of participation in both the American Legion and the Rotary Club. At the time of his death, he was the longest-serving member of the Lenox Rotary.

During their retirement years, Speck and Alberta enjoyed many activities such as spending the winter in San Juan, Texas, and working in the Administration Building at the Iowa State Fair. Between these activities, Speck enjoyed coffee with his friends at his favorite meeting place - the Tiger Den – where he enjoyed chatting about the weather, local happenings, or years gone by. He had an amazing ability to remember all aspects of life in Lenox, such as who married who, where people lived or moved, connections between families, and the history of Lenox in general.

Two other activities were extremely important to Speck - Christmas with the family at Doug and Lynn’s home, and pheasant hunting around Lenox with family and friends. Card games during Christmas wouldn’t have been the same without Speck’s outrageous bidding and storytelling. During his elder years, Speck didn’t do much actual hunting, but was always at the end of the farm field to pick up the hunters and provide coffee and doughnuts.

Most people that knew Speck well acknowledge he had two most distinguishing personal characteristics. First, he was a very generous person. Speck was always available to help family and friends with time, energy, and financial resources. Second, he was very deliberate. Speed was never his forte, but once he decided a course of action, he was determined and dependable.

Alberta, his family, and all of his friends will miss him dearly.

Paul Raymond Calvin was born on February 23, 1921 in Chadwick, Missouri. He passed away on July 2, 2008, at the age of 87. His parents, Arthur and Laura (Lowe) Calvin, and his brothers, Hudson “Hud”, James “Speck” and Jack and sisters, Opal and Helen, son, Roger and wife DeAnna preceded him in death. Surviving him are his loving wife of sixty five years, Vada of Lenox, Iowa; his brother Willard “Gabby” of Jasper, Missouri and his sister Juanita of Lenox, Iowa; his daughter, Sheila and her husband Dave Bovee of Dawson, Minnesota; Sheila’s family, Shannon and Ron Leggett and their children, Keeley, Kylie and Ted, all of Fairplay, Colorado; Sean McCall of Fairplay, Colorado; and Roger's family, Lisa and Doug Allison and their children, Lauren and Ryan of Corning, Iowa; Ray and Stacey Blair and their children Alexis and Ian of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Anne and Bill Dimmler and their children, Billy and Sydney of Corning, Iowa.

The Calvin family moved to Lenox from the Missouri Ozarks when Paul was three years old. He lived all of his life in Lenox. Paul attended several rural schools in the area.

Vada and Paul were married on March 25, 1943. Paul also entered the U.S. Army in 1943. He served as a medic the last few months of his military career riding the hospital trains from coast to coast. Paul made forty two trips across the United States. He was in all but two of the continental states delivering the wounded to the nearest V.A. Hospital close to their home. Paul was a member of the American Legion and received a sixty year membership certificate.

Following his military service, Paul owned and operated a portable feed mill. He then went to work for Davis Elevator and operated their portable mill. Sheila made many trips with her Dad in the mills going to the farm sites. Paul also was an active member of the Lenox Stock and Saddle Club serving as its secretary. In the fall of 1970, Paul and Vada purchased a business and named it Calvin’s Corral. They operated Calvin’s Corral for nine years before retiring.

During their retirement, Paul and Vada spent twenty three years during the winter months in San Juan, Texas. While there, they met people from around the country and made many life long friends. Neither Paul nor Vada had winter coats during these years and had movie star tans year round.

Paul was known as the family maintenance man. He was always willing to assist family members and any one else who needed assistance with a mechanical problem. It was always the immediate family’s saying about what “Eli” was building now out in his garage. Almost all of his inventions worked and served a purpose. Many people of the community are going to miss seeing Paul riding his little red Yamaha scooter around town. Paul was a very kind, gentle man. He was almost like a magnet to children. How he cherished spending time with his grandchildren.

Although Paul will be greatly missed by Vada,
his family and all of his dear friends,
his love and inspiration will live on through them.
His gentle kindness will be missed by everyone.

Campbell, Sarah "Adeline" Morehouse - Funeral services for Adeline Campbell, age 92 of Bedford, who died Thursday, October 25, 2007 at the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center were held Monday, October 29, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial was held in the Hopkins Cemetery in Hopkins, Missouri. Memorials can be given in Adeline’s name. Memories can be shared with the family on our website at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Sarah Adeline (Morehouse) Campbell was born January 2, 1915 on a farm west of Hopkins, Missouri the daughter of Timothy Grant Morehouse and Laura (Taylor) Morehouse. She had four older brothers, Robert, Dewey, Floyd and Charlie. When Adeline was three years old, her Dad was thrown from a horse and killed. Laura raised the boys and Adeline on the farm by herself. On May 11, 1933, Adeline was united in marriage to Hugh B. Campbell in Hopkins. Three children were born to bless their marriage, George, Helen and Albert. Later Hugh and Adeline divorced and she moved back to the home farm with her mother and raised her children. She also took jobs caring for others and as a maid at the Garland Hotel. Adeline received her nursing license and started working in Lenox, later purchasing a home in Sharpsburg. She also worked in Corning at the nursing home, while continuing to care for other people in their homes, one of which was Lester McKay, whom she later married. This marriage only lasted a couple of years, and then she sold her home and moved to Bedford where she lived for the rest of her life. At the age of 70, Adeline retired and took care of her brother Charlie until he died. In 2005, she moved to the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center where she lived at the time of her death.

Adeline was a wonderful homemaker and life-long area resident. She enjoyed tending a large garden and canning all of the produce to share with her neighbors and friends. She always had a ‘green thumb’ raising many plants and flowers, even keeping the basement full of bulbs during the winter months. She enjoyed caring for her brother Charlie when he lived on the farm west of Bedford. Being adventurous, she and Charlie were known to ‘take off in the car’, traveling to places unknown, leaving their family wondering where they had taken off to! In the 1960’s, Adeline went to Palm Springs, California to see her daughter Helen. Since she was visiting Helen for several months, she worked at the Desert Nursing Home. While visiting California, her biggest thrill was going to Hollywood to the Walk of Fame and seeing the handprints in the sidewalk. However, Adeline felt she couldn’t stay in California to live as there was no snow, rain, or mud . . . only sand! Helen tried several times to get her mother to move out to California, and since she would never consider doing that, Helen finally moved to Bedford. Adeline had been a member of the former Good Hope Church and later transferred her membership to the Christian Church in Hopkins.

Left to cherish Adeline’s memory are her three children, George Campbell and wife Thelma of Maryville, Missouri; Helen Smith Bradley and husband Ron of Bedford; and Albert Campbell and wife Dorothy of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren, Ed, Sheri, Faron, Shirley, Bruce and Lee; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; along with many other family relatives and friends.

Preceding Adeline in death were her parents Timothy and Laura Morehouse; her first husband, Hugh Campbell; and all four brothers, Floyd, Dewey, Charlie and Robert.

Adeline was dearly loved and will be missed by all of her family and friends.

Clark, Christopher David Funeral services for Christopher Clark, age 15 of Corning, who died Monday, May 9, 2005, at the Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Corning were held Thursday, May 12, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Roland-Ritchie Funeral Home in Corning with Reverend Ken Rummer officiating. Interment was held in the Memory Cemetery in New Market at 2:00 p.m. Memorials can be given in Christopher’s name. Please leave a message of tribute to the Clark family on our web page, www.ritchiefunralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to Roland-Ritchie Funeral Home of Corning.

Christopher David Clark was born December 28, 1989, at Mercy Hospital in Corning, Iowa the loving son of Jim Clark and Annette (Selders) Clark. Christopher was a life-long Corning resident. His disability did not affect his sense of humor and he was always up to playing ‘tricks’ on who ever was handy! Even though he couldn't speak, he was a great communicator and the more time you spent with him, the more you knew he was always aware of what was going on around him! The Corning Community School provided Christopher educational support first in a special-needs based preschool and then half days in grade school. As he got older his health became more fragile and the school provided teachers to continue working with Chris in his home.

In February 2004, Christopher had an extended stay at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines, at which time he expressed a desire to be baptized. Reverend Ken Rummer from Corning's First Presbyterian Church came to Chris's room to perform the ceremony, which gave Chris and his family a great sense of peace.

Christopher enjoyed joining his mom in various activities to advocate for families with special needs, attending an event at the State Capital and helping with a booth at the Iowa State Fair. He truly enjoyed visiting with his family and friends, watching the stock car races on TV and was a die-hard Earnhart lover! Next to being a big brother, the biggest thrill of his life was helping work on Phil Stamps' stock car, which was sponsored for a season by his family in honor of Chris's 10th birthday. He also enjoyed spending time listening to music, watching movies and hearing stories at home with his friends and family.

Left to cherish Christopher’s memory are his father and mother, Jim and Annette Clark and sister Sarah Clark all of Corning; grandparents Daryl and Connie Selders of Gravity and Larry and Connie Troxel of New Market; great grandfather Henry Karg of New Market; a special uncle, Daryn Selders of Gravity; his loving care-giver, Kathy Zadina of Corning, as well as the numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins who were part of his life.

Preceding Christopher in death are a brother, David Clark, who was stillborn; Grandmother Diane Selders; grandparents Frank and Elsie Clark, and great grandparents Bonnie Karg, Cleo and Orcelia “Toots” Selders, and Basil and Helen Troxel.

Harold Theodore Clark was born on August 6, 1917, in Adair County, Iowa the son of George Clark and Bertha (King) Clark. He grew up attending school in the community through the eighth grade. As a young man, he worked as a farm hand and during his spare time, he found his true calling of repairing automobiles. On January 25, 1941, Harold was united in marriage to Nellie Ross. They resided in the part of Creston, now known as Green Valley Park. Later they moved to Kent where he operated his own garage for a short time. He was then offered a position at Ford Tractor in Creston, where he worked for several years. In July of 1948, he opened Clark’s Service in Stringtown which was located in Elvin Riley’s old shop. He later purchased the property.

In September of 1957, Harold and Nellie purchased the Stringtown Store from Harry Reese. Together they operated the store, café and pumped gas in addition to operating the shop. In 1961, the store was closed and remodeled into living quarters. In 1963, Harold’s spare time was used to build a bigger, more efficient shop. During these years, he also added a wrecker service to his business. He spent many hours coming to the farmer’s rescue during planting and harvesting season and also assisting highway travelers. After building his new shop, he needed more room for his salvage cars, so he purchased some property from Jack Butler.

On August 19, 1967, a tragic accident at the intersection of Highway 34 and 25 took the life of Nellie. This was a drastic turning point for Harold. In September of 1967, he purchased a 1967 Pontiac Catalina. This was the first new vehicle Harold had ever owned, and he drove it for the rest of his life! This car is now owned by his grandson, Clark Burroughs.

On April 8, 1968, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Harold was united in marriage to Dona Lorraine Gilbert of Troy, Kansas. Together they lived in Stringtown until Harold retired in 1996, and they moved into Lenox.

Clark, Naomi "Ruth" Hanshaw Funeral Services for Ruth Clark, age 81 of Bedford who died Sunday, November 19, 2006 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center were held Friday, November 24, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Bedford. Interment was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Memorials can be directed to the First Baptist Church, the Taylor County Museum or the Bedford Library Elevator Fund. Memories can be shared with the family on our web site at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Naomi Ruth Hanshaw Clark was born in Bedford, Iowa on June 7, 1925, the daughter of Catherine Rebecca Walker Hanshaw and Carr Clifton Hanshaw. She died in Clarinda, Iowa on November 19, 2006.

Her family lived on West Main Street from where she walked to school in Bedford, and graduated from high school there in 1943. Her school days were during the Depression of the ‘30s and the World War II years of the ‘40s. Her class had no yearbook because of the paper shortage, no class trip due to fuel and tire shortages, and Bedford’s first black-out, part of an air raid drill, occurred during their commencement. In high school Ruth, who was a life-long pianist, was also active in glee club, band and orchestra. In 1944 she was the Taylor County War Bond Queen, for which the prize was a lavish week-end trip to Des Moines with other County Queens. During those war years a trip to Des Moines was an unusual treat.

On March 6, 1945 Ruth was married to Howard Reed Clark (Shorty) in Wathena, Kansas. Three children were born to the couple: Cathy Lou, November 27, 1948; Brent D., November 1, 1951; Patricia Lynn, June 14, 1954. Shorty died suddenly on December 22, 1983.

After high school Ruth worked at Lucille Livingston’s Coffee Shop, the Ben Franklin Store, Rexall Drug where she stirred up great chocolate sodas, the OPA (Office of Price Administration designed to control wartime inflation), and in the office of Cudahy’s. Later she was Shorty’s secretary at Farmer’s Mutual Insurance and the bookkeeper at Clark Lumber Company. After Shorty’s untimely death she rose to the occasion and became the sole proprietor of the Lumber Company for nearly eleven years. There were only two years of Ruth’s life that she did not live in Bedford. This is when she and Shorty owned and operated the Country Boys Lumber Yard in Grant City, before returning to Bedford and establishing Clark Lumber Company.

Ruth was an enthusiastic promoter and worker in the Bedford Community; a long-time member of the Rebekah Lodge, Lioness, and the Chamber of Commerce. After retirement she volunteered as a guide at the Taylor County Museum. She sold tickets at the gate of the Taylor County Fair for many years.

The Bedford Baptist Church was always her church home; she attended services there from the time she was a child. Ruth asked Jesus to be her Savior at the age of twelve, becoming a member of the church almost 70 years ago. When she was in high school she began playing the piano at church, which she continued throughout her life. When the organ became a part of the church’s music she became a self-taught organist as well. She was very proud that six generations of her family, beginning with her grandparents, attended the Bedford Baptist Church regularly.

Ruth’s faith carried her through many difficult times. A clinging cross, given to her by a dear friend, brought her much comfort during her final illness. It was always in her hand for every doctor’s appointment and treatment as a reminder of God’s love and care.

Ruth was a grandmother extraordinaire. She had a remarkable sense of how she could be of help and encouragement to her eight grandchildren, their spouses and her twelve great grandchildren. She sent cards, made phone calls, sent little packages, was readily available for visits, ran errands, helped baby-sit, and always claimed her grandmother’s rights for holding and cuddling a new baby. Every child should have a grandmother as loving as Ruth.

In addition to her joy of being with her immediate family, she treasured visits from her two nieces who live away, Judy and Merle Engleka, and Kaye and Len Ware. She was grateful that Carole (a special cousin) and Vic Noer lived close-by, which made possible many happy times together.

Ruth is survived by two daughters and a son: Cathy and Don Cochran, Spring Hill, KS; Brent and Debbie Clark, Glenwood, IA; Patricia and David Dukes, Bedford, IA., and grandchildren: Brandi and Kevin Chambers, Tera and Matt Schlotfelt, Alison Clark and Dan Porter, James Clark, Megan Clark, Elaina and James Johnson, Troy and Erin Dukes, Katy and Dustin Longfellow. Great grandchildren are Katelynn, Taylor and Sarah Chambers; Banner Schlotfelt; Preston and Logen Clark; Zachary, Alexander and Bradley Johnson; Mason and Quinton Dukes; and Ruthie Grace Longfellow.

She also is survived by three sisters-in-law; Ethel Hanshaw, Maxine Wallace and Phyllis Clark, and brother-in-law, Dean Clark and wife Sally. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss her generous, loving and caring ways.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard Reed Clark; brothers, Forrest Hanshaw and Clif Hanshaw; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Hanshaw and Kay Hanshaw; and nephews, Jim Hanshaw and Paul Hanshaw .

May God grant comfort and strength to those who mourn Ruth’s passing.
