Adams, Clara Estella Wilson - Clara Estella Adams, age 99, died on August 14, 1982 in the Clarinda Municipal Hospital, Clarinda, Iowa.

She was born on November 14, 1882 near Ida Grove, IA to James and American (Belle) Wilson.

She was married in 1909 to Bert Adams who died in 1973.

She is survived by her daughters Mildred Wiles, New Market,Iowa; Shirley Downey, Witchta, KS; and Wilma June Mansfield, Clinton, IA; 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Burial was in the Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa

 

 

Adams, Gladys Rankin - Gladys Adams, age 92, of Clarinda, Iowa died on Friday, February 2, 2001 at her home in Clarinda.

She was born on November 28, 1908 in Taylor County, Iowa, the daughter Ira and Elsie Stewart Rankin.

She was a graduate of Hopkins High School.

On February 25, 1927 she was married to Claude (Babe) Adams. He died on February 25, 1973. She took her LPN training in 1951. She was a supervisor at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute retiring after 35 years. She was survived by her daughter Betty Jo Maley of Clarinda, Iowa, and grandson Jim Maley of Castlerock, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Bobby Don Adams at age 2, and sister Audrey Haarstick.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 5, 2001 at Walker-Merrick with Daniel Wallace and Pastor Alvin Trusty officiating. Burial was in the Memory Cemetery at New Market, Iowa. Memorials were suggested to the Omaha Home for Boys or to the Little Indians of South Dakota. Walker-Merrick was in charge of arrangements.

 

Adams, Grace Elizabeth Warrick - Grace Elizabeth (Warrick) was born on April 29, 1915 at Hawleyville, Iowa, one of fifteen children, the daughter of Fielden and Miriam Elizabeth McWilliams Warrick. Her mother died when she was eight years old and she lived with sisters and brothers at various locations. She lived with her brother Calvin and started school in Omaha, Nebraska. After the eighth grade she moved back to the Clarinda area. On September 15, 1932 she was married to Paul Wilson Adams at Grant City, Missouri. They lived in the New Market area and Grace became a devoted mother and housewife. She had been a longtime member of The Church of Christ, and was a member of the Rebecca Lodge in New Market for many years.
Grace is survived by her children, Lillian Hutt of Clarinda, Judie King and husband Frank of Clarinda, Gayle Wagoner-Bolton and husband Rod of Tabor, and Paula Stanley and husband Bob of Glenwood; grandchildren, David Hutt of Clarinda, Kimberly Allen and husband Elvin of Bedford, Robyn Matheny of Omaha, Nebraska, Ben Matheny and significant other Tara of Omaha, Nebraska, Whitney Wilberding and husband Brent of Omaha, Nebraska, Scott Joseph Stanley of Cummings, Georgia, and Rachel Stanley of Glenwood; great-grandchildren, Breanna Brown of Maryville, Missouri, Ryleigh Matheny of Omaha, Nebraska; and one sister-in-law Wilma Mansfield of Ankeny; nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Paul; one son-in-law Lloyd Hutt; brothers and sisters, Josephine Mart, Walter Warrick, Clarrisa Farrens, Jennie Schenck, Herb Warrick, Calvin Warrick, Alice Neal, twins Harold and Harry Warrick, Edythe Caley, Vincent Warrick, Carroll Warrick, and Wilma Herold. Also by her parents in-law Bert and Clara Adams who were particularly special to her.
Grace was a kind, loving and devoted mother who always put family needs first. Her greatest joy was having all of her family around her. She loved serving her husband, children and grandchildren. When she was asked what she wanted for an upcoming birthday or Christmas present she would always say, “As long as I have my family I have everything.”
She welcomed anyone into her home to have a meal. She was a wonderful cook with several family favorites such as homemade chicken and noodles, grape dumplings, apple cobbler, her special raisin cake and cinnamon rolls.
Grace was also known far and wide for being an immaculate housekeeper who took great pride in keeping her home and family neat and tidy.
Her greatest legacy was her unconditional love for her family which was shown through her dedication and love.
Funeral services for Grace Adams age 93 of Clarinda were held 10:30 a.m. Saturday April 11, 2009 at the Church of Christ in New Market, Iowa. with Interment at Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa, Memorials are to the Church of Christ in New Market. Visitation was held 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday April 10, 2009 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home of Clarinda, Iowa. The Tradition of Walker-Merrick Funeral home has served the family.

 

Akers, Elva Maude Stephens - Elva Akers, age 94 of Bedford, who died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center were held Friday, June 25, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ritchie, with Pastor Ted DeHass officiating. Interment was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Memorials can be directed to the Bedford Nursing 7 Rehab Center Bird Sanctuary. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie of Bedford, Iowa.

Elva Maude Stephens Akers was born August 20, 1909, in Taylor County, Iowa the daughter of V.G. Stephens and Pearl Patch Stephens. She grew up on a farm seven miles east of Bedford attending rural schools to the eighth grade. She then attended Bedford high School, living in town during the week with the Myron Reynolds family, going home on the weekends and graduating with the Class of 1928. After graduation, Elva taught rural school east of Bedford for a few years.

On February 25, 1933, she was united in marriage to L.D. Akers in Nebraska City, Nebraska.
After their marriage, Elva and L.D. moved to a farm north of Gravity, and then in 1954 they purchased their own farm north of Bedford. After L.D.’s passing, Elva continued to live on the farm until her health required her to move to the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center two weeks ago.

Elva was a long-time member of the Bedford Christian Church and later the United Christian Presbyterian Church. She was active in several clubs and Church Women United. She loved to be outdoors and living on the farm where she spent many hours in her garden tending to her flowers. Elva’s family was the most important thing in her life. She always put other’s needs ahead of her own. She also thoroughly enjoyed sewing and providing for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish Elva’s memory are her son Russell Akers and wife Beckie of Bedford; a grandson, Jeffery Akers and wife Dianna of Bedford; four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Bailey, Keaton and Cailyn; two sisters, Letha Schurr and Doris Coon both of Bedford; two sisters-in-law, Verneil Stephens and Inez Tribolet, both of Bedford; along with many friends.

Preceding Elva in death are her husband L.D. in 1982; her parents V.G. and Pearl; a brother Orville Stephens and a grandson Michael Akers.

 

Akers, Francis "Wayne" - Francis Wayne Akers was born September 23, 1951 in Maryville , Missouri to Francis Leroy and Bonnie Lee (Humphrey) Akers. He was married to Barbara Miller on November 8, 1985 at the Courthouse in Bedford, Iowa.

After graduating Bedford High School Wayne enlisted in the Air Force in 1970 during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Thailand and Laos. He served until 1973. Wayne was a repairman on aircraft, truck driver, and the recovery of soldiers among other assignments. After an honorable discharge from the US Air Force Wayne worked on constructing the highway and bridge between Clarinda and New Market. Hoover-NSK opened in Clarinda and in 1976 he started working at the manufacturing plant. Wayne worked for there for 29 years without an absence until May 2005 when he went on medical leave due to his illness.

After nearly a year of fighting esophageal cancer and other complications he passed away at Jennie Edmondson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA, Saturday morning, March 25, 2005. He will be missed by family, co-workers, friends and neighbors.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Geri Miller.

He is survived by his wife Barb of Clarinda; children Shawn Thompson and wife Angie of Omaha, NE, Heather and husband Pat Rehder of Omaha, NE, and Cody Akers of Denver, CO; brother Jeff Akers of Gravity, Iowa; mother Bonnie Akers of Gravity, Iowa ; and two grandchildren, Chase Rehder and Kail Thompson.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 Thursday, March 30, 2005 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Clarinda, with Rev. Charles Bulger and Dr. Tim Roehl officiating. Burial will be at Covenenter Cemetery, Clarinda. Family visitation is 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda. Memorials are suggested to Clarinda Fire Department Ladder Truck, Nodaway Valley Free Clinic, or American Cancer Society. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

 

Akers, Francis Leroy - Memorial services for Francis Akers, age 74 of Gravity, who died Friday, May 21, 2004 at Alegent Mercy Hospital were held Sunday, May 23, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ritchie with Pastor Loren Daly officiating. Memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s association. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie of Bedford, Iowa.

Francis Leroy Akers was born on the family farm northeast of Gravity on November 29, 1929 the son of Frank and Jessie Lacox Akers. He grew up in the Gravity area attending country school to the eighth grade, and graduating from Gravity High School in 1948. On January 20, 1950 he was united in marriage to bonnie Humphrey in Bedford. To this union two children, Wayne and Jeff, were born.

Francis lived and farmed in the Gravity area all of his life. Whether tending his livestock or raising a crop, he enjoyed the farming lifestyle. Francis was an excellent mechanic, a trait passed on to his sons. He enjoyed his cars and vehicles, with his 1934 Ford Coupe with a rumble seat being his favorite. He was involved in his children’s lives, often attending their many activities. Francis was a member of the Gravity Christian Church.

Left to cherish Francis’ memory are his wife bonnie, his two sons, Wayne Akers and wife Barb of Clarinda, Jeff Akers of Gravity; a sister, Jean Beemer and husband Dick of Gravity; a grandson, Cody Akers of Clarinda; two step grandchildren; one great grandson; many nieces nephews, cousins and friends.
Preceding Francis in death were his parents Frank and Jessie.

Akes, Maxine V. Hoffman - On June 16, 2009 Maxine V. Akes passed away at the Bedford Nursing and Rehab Center, Bedford, her home since April 2006.

Born on February 19, 1921 she was the eighth of sixteen children born to May Ellen (Goodwin) and Clarence Hoffman at Clarinda, Iowa. She grew up there going to the Iowa School for the Blind in Vinton, Iowa.

In 1940 she was united in marriage to Frederick E. Akes, Sr., of Clarinda, Iowa. they had three children: Frederick E., Jr., Carroll D.,. and Dixie L., and one step-daughter, Patty Joe (deceased).
The couple lived in Clarinda until 1954 at which time they moved to a farm south of Conway, Iowa. in later years they moved to Bedford. Maxine worked at the Bedford Manor for several years after her children were grown. Her husband Fred died in 1986.


She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1949. She actively exercised and shared her faith by visiting many residents of Taylor County as long as she was physically able. She instilled in her children a deep love for God and a bright hope for the future, which she herself cherished to the end of her life.
Maxine is survived by one sister, Violet Rogers of Sheldahl, Iowa; her three children: Ed and wife Edie, Carroll and wife Joyce, Dixie and husband Gene Ehlers, all of Bedford, Iowa. She also leaves nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and a very dear lifelong friend, Naomi Thomas, as well as many more friends.


Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2009 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Bedford with interment at Bedford City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to a fund in Maxine's name. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel provided arrangements.

 

Alexander, Lyle Dean - Funeral services for Lyle Alexander, age 61 of Gravity, who died Sunday, June 30, 2002 were held Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Loren Daly officiating.

Interment was held in the Washington Cemetery in Gravity. Memorials can be given in Lyle's name. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Lyle Dean Alexander was born March 15, 1941 on the family farm in Gravity, the son of Malvern Alexander and Avis Morey Alexander. He grew up attending Wesley School, trudging down the long clay hill to the schoolhouse. They were known as the 'water kids' as it was their responsibility to carry daily water supply for the school. This chore began with his oldest brother and was handed down as soon as the next was able to hold up their side of the bucket! Lyle graduated with the Class of 1959 from the Gravity Community High School.

On March 16, 1962 he was united in marriage to Judy Wilmes in Bedford. To this loving union four children were born, Rick, Julie, Rob and Jill.

Lyle was a hardworking mechanic and farmer all of his life. In 1973, after the death of his father, he returned to the family farm to run his mechanic shop. Lyle inherited his father's mechanical ability. He had capability of listening to a motor and hearing the separate parts function, knowing just the right thing to fix whatever problem there might be. He enjoyed coon hunting and digging up Indian artifacts when time allowed. Lyle's greatest pride and joy came from spending time with his grandchildren. Left to cherish Lyle's memory and his wife Judy of Gravity his children. Allen, Alice C. Nethers - Alice C. Allen was born Jan 23, 1921 at Bedford, Iowa to Willis and Gertrude (Bradley) Nethers. She graduated Bedford High School and later married Cecil A. Allen on Feb 15, 1947. The couple were married sixty-one years. She lived her entire life in Taylor County, Iowa. They lived on a farm until 1989 then moved to Bedford to retire. In 2001 Alice moved to Bedford Nursing & Rehab until she passed away Feb 18, 2008 at the age of 87.
Alice was a member of the Bedford United Methodist Church for seventy-one years. She loved quilting, gardening, canning and camping – having been a long time member of Good Sam’s Club.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Tom Fort.
She is survived by her husband, Cecil Allen of Bedford, IA; three sons: Howard Allen and wife Marilyn of Bedford, IA, Lyle Allen of Bedford, IA, and Elvin Allen and wife Kimberly of Bedford; sister, Marilyn Fort of Clarinda, IA; grandchildren: Heather Osburn and husband Tony of Clarinda, IA, Sean Allen and wife Alisa of Springfield, MO, Ashley Turner and husband Tyler of Hopkins; and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, February 21, 2008 at Bedford United Methodist Church with Rev. Tim Rieckhoff-Faris officiating. Interment was at Bedford Fairview Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel of Bedford was in charge of arrangements.

 

Allen, Jean Frances Slocum - Funeral services for Jean F. Allen, age 83, of Lenox, who died Friday, August 21, 2009 at the Lenox Care Center were held Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox. Visitation were Tuesday from 3 to 7 with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7. An Eastern Star Service follow the visitation. Cremation follow the services with interment of ashes at a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

Jean Frances (Slocum) Allen was born February 23, 1926 in Webster City, Iowa the eldest daughter of Dr. James E. Slocum and Dr. Anna L. (Lubbers) Slocum. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines with the Class of 1944. She then attended Drake University for one and a half years. She then studied at the Roy C. Knapp School of Percussion in Chicago for six years, riding the train from Des Moines to Chicago once a week. Jean was a professional drummer for over thirty years, playing with the all girl orchestra ~ “Morrow’s Melodians” for over twenty-six of those years. She also played for “Jack and 2 queens Combo” for four years. From 1946 to 1972, she was married to Dr. Marvin T. Gordon. To this union five daughters were born: Cynthia, Kathy, Connie, Christie and a daughter who died at birth. The family lived in Baxter, Iowa; Des Moines, Iowa; Globe, Arizona; and in Clearfield, Iowa for seventeen years. Jean was a fifty year consultant and District Manager for Luzier Cosmetics.

In 1976, Jean married Bernard D. Allen of Osceola. To this union, three children were added to her family: Bernard, Lee and Abby. In 1978, they moved to Prescott, Iowa where Bernard was the Postmaster. They recently downsized and moved to an apartment in Lenox, Iowa to enjoy attending the activities of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean belonged to the Cornelia Chapter OES in Clearfield where she was Past Matron. She served the Grand Chapter of Iowa OES as Grand Marshall in 1981. She also belonged to the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints.

Left to cherish Jean’s memory are her husband Bernard Allen of Lenox; her brother Robert Slocum and wife Donna of Dallas, Texas; three daughters, Cynthia Baker and husband Galen of Clearfield; Kathy Brown and husband Gary of Lenox; and Christie Brown and husband Bill of Lenox; her step-children, Bernard Allen, Jr., and wife Liz of Excelsior Springs, Missouri; Lee Allen and wife Cheryl of Hilltop Lakes, Texas; and Abbie Allen of Grimes, Iowa; Jean has eighteen grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews who will miss her greatly.

Preceding Jean in death were her grandparents; parents; a sister, Shirley Wick of Port Orchard, Washington; and a daughter, Connie Gordon of Maryville, Missouri.


Ambrose, Carol Lynn - Memorial services for Carol Ambrose, age 46 of Bedford, who died Thursday, December 10, 2009 at her home in Gravity were held Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Bedford. Interment of ashes will be held at a later date at the Washington Cemetery in Gravity. Memorials can be given in her name. Memories can be shared with the family at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com. Carol Lynn Ambrose, the daughter of Jack Duane Ambrose and Delores Francis (Moffett) Ambrose was born October 8, 1963, in Corning, Iowa and passed away December 10, 2009 at her home in Gravity, Iowa.
Carol was born and raised in Gravity where she grew up attending school in Gravity and graduating from Bedford High School with the class of 1982. She continued her education in the field of nursing, graduating from Southwestern Community College with an Associates Degree of Nursing in 1985. She worked in several medical facilities, with her last employment being at the Westridge Nursing & Rehab in Clarinda, Iowa. Carol took great pleasure working with both residents and staff. After she was unable to work, she continued to be friends with many from Westridge.
Carol was actively involved in Rainbow, Order of Eastern Star where she held the position of Worthy Advisor and Worthy Matron. She was also a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader for many years. In her leadership position with the Scouts, Carol had the privilege of leading her nephews into becoming Eagle Scouts. She also enjoyed taking trips to various states with the Scouts.
Carol very much enjoyed crafts, scrap booking, collecting Boyd’s Bears, Terry Redlin prints and Fire King Dishes. She was always taking photographs and above all, Carol was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan! Carol’s life was her family . . . . along with her dogs and cats. Her beloved dogs were Golden Retrievers known to everyone as Nutmeg, Stormy and Lizzy. These dogs remained her loyal and devoted friends throughout her adult life.
Carol was baptized in the Gravity United Methodist Church, later transferring her membership to the Bedford United Methodist Church where she remained loyal to her church and faith until the time of her death.
Left to cherish the memories of a wonderful sister, aunt, nurse and friend are her brothers, Charles Ambrose and wife Helen of Gravity; Curt Ambrose and wife Tami of Tiffin, Iowa; and Rod Ambrose and wife Shannon of Brooks, Alberta, Canada; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Preceding Carol in death are her parents, Jack and Delores Ambrose.
Although Carol will be greatly missed, her love and inspiration will live on through her family.

 

Ambrose, Delores F. Moffett - Funeral services for Delores Ambrose, age 71 of Gravity, who died Thursday, December 6, 2007 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center were held Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bedford United Methodist Church. Interment was held in the Washington Cemetery in Gravity. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Hearing Impaired in care of the family. Delores F. (Moffett) Ambrose was born July 23, 1936 in Iowa City, Iowa the daughter of James Edward Moffett Sr. and Lola Neville (Knox) Moffet. She was raised by her mother and step-father , Gus Manroe, attending school in the Lenox and Clearfield areas. She met Jack Ambrose on a double date while roller skating in Lenox. The couple was united in marriage on February 16, 1954 in Nevada, Missouri. Four children were born to bless this marriage, Charles, Curt, Rodney and Carol. The couple moved into the telephone office in Gravity where Delores operated the switchboard and Jack worked on the telephone lines. In 1956, they moved to a farm north of Gravity until the spring of 1960, when the family moved into Gravity where she resided at the time of her death.
Delores was a long-time member of the Gravity United Methodist Church where she was very active, holding several church offices and involved in the United Methodist Women (UMW). When the Gravity church closed the family transferred their membership to the Bedford United Methodist Church. Family was always very important to Delores and being active in their lives was her main priority. This passion for her family only increased as her grandchildren were born. She truly enjoyed baking many treats for them. Delores collected angels and porcelain dolls. She spent time doing craft work, embroidering and crocheting. She enjoyed reading and keeping her mind active working puzzles. She loved her pets, “Cassie” being very dear to her. Delores was also the Past President of the Gravity American Legion Auxiliary and active in the Gravity Fireman’s Auxiliary.
Left to cherish Delores’ memory are her four children, Charles Ambrose and wife Helen of Gravity; Curt Ambrose and wife Tami of Williamsburg, Iowa; Rodney Ambrose and wife Shannon of Brooks Alberta, Canada; and Carol Ambrose of Gravity; a sister, Darlene Manroe of Gravity; two brothers, Bill Moffett and wife Shirley of Littleton, Colorado; and Earl Moffett and wife Anna Mae of Thermal, California; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren along with many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Preceding Delores in death were her parents, James and Lola Moffett; her step-father, Gus Manroe; her husband Jack Ambrose in 1989; and her brother James Edward Moffett, Jr.

 

Ambrose, Maxine Paula Clapper - Graveside services for Maxine Ambrose, age 86 of Gravity who died Sunday, May 28, 2006 at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha were held Thursday, June 1, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Washington Cemetery in Gravity. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.
Maxine Paula (Clapper) Ambrose was born April 11, 1920, in Fremont County, Iowa the daughter of Perry Albert Clapper and Pearl Ora (Thompson) Clapper. She grew up on a farm south of Tabor, and later the family moved into Tabor where she graduated from high school. She met Wade Ambrose and the couple was united in marriage on December 20, 1939, in Savannah, Missouri. After their marriage, Maxine and Wade moved to Plattsmouth, Nebraska where Wade was a magician. He and Maxine moved to Florida where they lived and traveled around performing magic shows. In 1985, they moved to Gravity where she continued to live until her death.
Maxine loved cats, and was always willing to take in another. She was a people person who enjoyed being around others. Although she had no children of her own, Maxine, being the very tender hearted sole she was, loved taking care of animals.
Left to cherish Maxine's memory are her five brothers and sisters: Elda Lybarger and husband Dwight; Darlene Smith and husband Ernest; Donald Clapper; Bob Clapper, all of Tabor; and JoAnne Davis of Bellevue, Nebraska; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Ambrose of Denison; and a sister-in-law, Delores Ambrose of Gravity; along with many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Maxine in death were her parents Perry and Pearl Clapper; her husband Wade in 2000; a daughter Alice Ann at infancy and a brother Fay Clapper.

Ames, Crystal Virginia Howes - Crystal Virginia Ames, daughter of Dallas Bernard and Ethel Violet Peterman Howes, was born March 22, 1925 in Bedford, Iowa. She departed this life, Tuesday, January 30, 2007 in her home in Buffalo, Missouri at the age of eighty-one years, ten months and eight days.

On December 9, 1943 in Maryville, Missouri, she was united in marriage to E.N. Ames and to this union seven children were born.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Richard Loran Ames; two daughters, Cheri Carlene Ames and Virginia Rae Ames and two brothers, Dallas Howes, Jr. and Benny Howes.

Survivors include her loving husband of sixty-three years, E.N. Ames of the home; two daughters, Rayma Bax of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Ronda Glaspy and her husband Mike of Blairstown, Missouri; two sons, Lindell Ames and his wife Janna of Warrenton, Missouri and Rendell Ames and Tammy of Buffalo, Missouri; thirteen grandchildren, Brandon Loving, Emma Glaspy, Whitney Ames, Lacee Ames, Ila Ames, Clint Glaspy, Zachary Ames, Anna Bax, Gabriel Ames, Sarah Ames, Annabelle Ames, Sophie Bax and Noah Ames; a great-granddaughter, Mya; two brothers, David Howes of Red Oak, Iowa and Richard Howes of Greenfield, Iowa; seven sisters, Naomi Moore of Bedford, Iowa, Marilyn Bradley of Charles City, Iowa, Anita Hall of Shenandoah, Iowa, Lois Young of Sac City, Iowa, Ruth Marsh of Sac City, Iowa, Linda Hull of Bedford, Iowa and Jean Marsh of the state of Texas and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Crystal was raised in rural Taylor County, Iowa and graduated from Bedford High School in 1942. After she and her husband were married they continued to live in Bedford where she taught school for a time. During World War II she assisted the war effort by working in a defense plant in Parsons, Kansas. After the war, she and E.N. lived in Sheridan, Missouri, later moving to Columbia, Jefferson City and then to Camdenton in 1964. In October of 2006, they moved to Buffalo, Missouri.

Crystal enjoyed being a waitress and had worked at the Eat More Café and Texaco Town, both in Columbia. She worked at the Odom Café and the Night Hawk Café in Camdenton. She later owned and operated Crystal’s Bake and Coffee Shop and Piggy’s Ice Cream Shop.

Crystal was a charter-member of the V.F.W. Post 5923 Ladies Auxiliary and a life-member of the American Legion Post 193.

She made a profession of faith in Christ and was a charter-member of the Camdenton United Methodist Church.

In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and grew many beautiful flowers. She enjoyed reading and loved to cook and bake. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Crystal was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and accomplishments and will cherish the memories she created for her family and friends.

Funeral service with V.F.W. auxiliary honors were at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 3, 2007 in Allee-Hollman-Howe Funeral Home with Reverend Marc Magana and Reverend Keith Lee officiating. Visitation was from 6-8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home. Graveside service and burial was Sunday, February 4, 2007 at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford, Iowa.
Memorial donations may be made to the Regional Care Hospice and left at the funeral home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Camdenton.

Anderson, Doris Evelyn Andrew - Doris Evelyn Andrew was born November 9, 1927 near Guss, Iowa, to Ralph Palmer and Vivian Matilda (McCoy) Andrew. Doris attended country school and graduated from Bedford High School in 1947. She taught country school for five years near Gravity, Iowa, before marrying Dale M. Anderson on June 17, 1951, at the New Market United Methodist Church. They farmed north of New Market until 1960 when they moved to Logan, Iowa, where Dale started in the banking business. Dale took a job at Farmers Savings Bank in Martelle, Iowa in 1963. Martelle became their home for the next 43 years. Doris joined the bank working as a teller and bookkeeper until their joint retirement in 1993. After Doris suffered a stroke in 2004, she and Dale moved to Kingswood Senior Living Center in Kansas City, Missouri, where they were living when she passed away on January 30, 2009.
Doris was always active in community organizations and the United Methodist Church. Starting in her younger years 4-H was a major focus and love, which continued as a 4-H leader for her daughter Denean. Until her death, Doris maintained a great friendship with her high school classmates from Bedford. She was active in the Guss, New Market, Logan and Martelle United Methodist Churches, was a 50+ year member of Eastern Star, member of PEO, Century Club, Jones County Cancer Society, Jones County Tourism, Martelle Senior Center, and supported numerous community events. She and Dale were avid Hawkeye football and basketball fans traveling as far as Alaska and Hawaii to watch their team.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Adrian Andrew. Doris is survived by her husband, Dale, of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter Denean V. Smith and husband Mark of De Pere, Wisconsin; son Dean A. Anderson and wife Marcia of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren Kristin Smith, Kansas City, MO, Sarah Smith, Milwaukee, WI, and Katie Anderson, Overland Park, KS; sister-in-law Vesta Andrew of Clarinda, IA; nephews Laurence and Warren Andrew; sister in-laws Lois Garrett (Kenneth), Clarinda, IA, and Elynor Kerr, Leesburg, VA; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews from the Andrew, Anderson and McCoy families.
Doris was a community focused, selfless person that encouraged and instilled values in others, especially youth, to do what is right. She will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held at Noon Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, with Pastor Jon Moss officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, February 2nd, and again Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service. A memorial service will also be held at Kingswood Senior Care Center, Kansas City, MO, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4th. Her family wishes to thank both the Jones Regional Medical Center and Kingswood doctors and staff for their excellent support and care over the last four years. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Martelle United Methodist Church, Martelle Senior Center, Jones Regional Medical Center (Anamosa, IA), or the charity of choice. Interment will be at Memory Cemetery, New Market, IA.

 

Anderson, Lois Kimpton - Lois Kimpton Anderson, 88, of Winterset died Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at the Winterset Care Center South in Winterset.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 14, 2009 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. A visitation were held from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, September 13, with family present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Burial were in the Winterset Cemetery. Lois Kimpton Anderson was born March 17, 1921 in Gravity, Iowa; the daughter of John and Ethel (Beery) Kimpton. She graduated from Bedford High School in 1938 and later married Car Anderson on September 28, 1940 in Chillicothe, Missouri. Lois taught country school in a one room school house in rural Taylor County for 5 years while Carl was in the Army during WWII. They moved to Winterset in 1955 from Austin, Minnesota.
Lois was a full-time homemaker, staying home and raising her boys and helping on the family farm. She later was a head cook at Bethesda Care Center for over 17 years. She enjoyed flowers and gardening, taking walks, and riding on the four-wheeler. Lois loved her farm cats and had nearly 20 at one time. Lois was her husband, Carl’s ears. The two of them were always together.
She is survived by her husband, Carl of Winterset; two sons, Dale Anderson (Linda) of White Pigeon, MI and Glen Anderson (Linda) of Winterset; 7 grandchildren Michael, Robert, Woody, Andrew, Allen, Emma, and Aaron); 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers and 3 sisters, including Vida Snyder (June 2008) formerly of Winterset.

 

Argo, Don -Don Argo, 67, of New Market, Iowa, passed away Aug 17, 2004 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital, Council Bluffs, Iowa. He grew up in the Skidmore and Maryville, Missouri areas. He was born to Merlin and Phyllis (Davenport) Argo on Dec 12, 1936.
He was married on July 6, 1958 to Deloris Hamilton of Clearmont, Missouri. Don worked in Maryville several years. He retired from Page County Secondary Road Dept in Clarinda after 21 years of service. Don enjoyed his family and friends. Since retirement he loved drinking coffee with several friends at the convenience store in New Market.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law J.T. and Bea Hamilton; three brothers-in-law: Buster Hamilton, Bud Hamilton, and Garry Hamilton; sister-in-law Marjorie Whipple; and nephew, Randy Argo.
He is survived by his wife, Deloris of New Market; children Donald E. Argo Jr and his wife Debbie of Shenandoah, Ia, Lori Madison and husband Dave of New Market, Ia, Bob Argo and companion Susan Savala of New Market, and Kathy Haffner and companion Tim Myers of Villisca, Ia; fifteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren; brother Bill Argo and wife Fran of Council Bluffs, Ia; two sisters: Louise Wallace and husband Ralph of Clearmont, Mo, and Sharon McClain of Maryville, Mo; brothers-in-law Gerald Hamilton of Clearmont, Mo, Larry Hamilton and wife Maxine of Coin, Ia, and Dallas Hamilton and wife Rita of Burlington Junction, Mo; sisters-in-law Andrea Hamilton of Maloy, Ia, and Dorothy Hamilton of Pueblo, Co; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug 20, at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel, Clarinda, with Rev. Russ Clark officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Clearmont. Memorials are suggested to New Market Fire & Rescue Dept. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

 

Ashman, Minnie Irene Wurster - Graveside services for Minnie Ashman, age 88, of Lenox, who died Saturday, April 14, 2007 at the Lenox Care Center were held Tuesday, April 16, 2007 at e p.m. at the Beacon Cemetery in Beacon, Iowa. Memorials can be given in Minnie’s name. Minnie is the sister of Ruth Reynolds of Lenox. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

Minnie Irene Ashman was born July 14, 1918, on a farm two miles west of Lenox, the daughter of John F. Wurster and Mary E. (Lee) Wurster. At the age of fifteen, she worked in a nursing home in Oskaloosa, Iowa for ten years. Minnie then moved to Louisville, Kentucky where she was foreman of Spaulding and Sons Landry for seven years. She was converted at the Walnut Street Baptist Church in 1943. In 1951, after World War II, she moved back to Oskaloosa and worked at Pella Rollscreen Plant in Pella for twenty-five years until her retirement. She was a member of the Christian Church in Lenox. Minnie was united in marriage to William G. Ashman, Sr., in 1958, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines. Following the death of her husband in 1984, Minnie moved back to her home town of Lenox in 1987.
Minnie’s favorite times were spent caring for her home and being with her children and grandchildren. She loved being outdoors with nature and especially enjoyed the birds. Her favorite pastime was listening to music and reading her Bible. Minnie also enjoyed cooking, her dogs and always looked forward to Sunday afternoon drives.
Left to cherish Minnie’s memory are her sister, Ruth Reynolds of Lenox; a sister-in-law, Mary Wurster of Lenox; four step-sons, William Ashman, Jr., and wife Leona of Oskaloosa; Robert Ashman and wife Martha of East Dubuque; Brice Ashman and wife Margaret of Des Moines; and Gordon Ashman and wife Teresa of Indianola; a step-daughter, Wilda Current and husband Bob of Indianola; twelve step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; and many step-great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding Minnie in death are her parents, John and Mary Wurster; her husband, William Ashman; a sister, Dorothy Crisp; two brothers, Russell and Clifford Wurster; and one sister-in-law, Irene Wurster.

Adams, Manford - Funeral services for Manford Adams, 95, were conducted from the Walker Funeral Home Saturday, with Preacher Loren Daly of New Market Church of Christ in charge.

Mr Adams was the son of the late Levi and Mary Jane King Adams. Born on a farm near New Market, he spent his entire lifetime in Taylor County, and the last 60 years in New Market. He died at his home at 8:50 pm Thursday, following an illness of about a year. For many years his occupation was that of a miner, working in the New Market coal mines when they were in operation.

He is survived by his wife, the former Cora Ethel Savage and eight children, Mrs Lester (Helen) Parks, Gravity, Kenneth D. Adams, Las Vegas, Nev., Babe Adams, New Market, Ray Adams, Pickering, Mo, Harold Adams, Browning, Mo, Mrs Margie Knapp, Blue River, Ore, Jack Adams, Bahama Islands, Keith Adams, Paola, Kans. One brother is Jess Adams, Oregon City, Ore.

He was preceded in death by three children, Mrs Theo Greenway, Ronald Adams and Leslie M. Adams as well as three brothers and two sisters.

Casket bearers were his sons, Kenneth, Babe, Harold, Raymond, Keith and Jack Adams. Because of difficulties in securing a flight from Miami to Kansas City, his son Jack did not arrive until after the services, and Abel Greenway Jr substituted for him as a casketbearer.

Organ music for the service was by Miss Aletha L. Hutchings. Burial was in the Memory cemetery near New Market.
