Lucas, Blythe Damewood - Funeral services for Mrs Kenneth E. (Blythe) Lucas, 57, of Bedford, held March 12, at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Carl Cummings and Rev Ollie Odle. Mrs Lucas died March 10, 1971 at her home here. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, bedford.
Blythe Lorene Damewood, daughter of Clyde M. and Blanche Humphrey Damewood, was born August 11, 1913, in Taylor County, Iowa, near Sharpsburg.
Blythe received her primary edcation at a county school near the farm where she grew up. She graduated her high school course at Sharpsburg, Iowa.
Except for approximately three years, 1943 to 1946 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she lived her entire years in Taylor County.
On March 20, 1937, she was united in marriage to Kenneth E. Lucas. To them was born one son, Kenneth Dean Lucas, who is now married and lives with his wife, Kathi, and two children, Natalie Dee and Mitchell Scott, at Pella, Iowa.
Blythe became a Christian, by confession of faith, and was baptized into the membership of the Bedford Baptist Church on May 1, 1960.
She was employed at the Style Shoppe in Bedford for approximately nine years. She gave up her work in 1969 when her health and strength began to diminish.
She was preceded in death by her father, Clyde M. Damewood, on October 16, 1949.
Left to cherish memories of her are her husband, Kenneth; a son, Kenneth Dean and family; mother, Blanche Damewood, Bedford; three sisters, Coryl (Mrs Bing Miller) of Lenox, Margaret (Mrs Vane Lucas) of Bedford, and Doris (Mrs Mark Anderson) of Lincoln, Nebr; a host of nieces and nephews, and many fine friends and neighbors.
Blythe was a kind and loving wife and mother. She was always kind and attentive to her mother. She enjoyed a close and loving relationship with her three sisters. She had many friends.
She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Lucas, Ivan Wayne - Funeral services for Ivan Wayne Lucas, 75, of Lenox were held Saturday, June 10, at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox with Rev Tim Maxa officiating.
Music was provided by Margaret Whipp and Vera Bradley.
Casket bearers were Ted Lucas, Jeff Lucas, Scott Maltzahn, Todd Maltzahn, Larry Rogers and Dr Jim Lucas. Honorary bearer was Christopher Calendine.
Interment was in North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.
Ivan died Jun 7 in Creston, after battling an illness.
He was born Nov 30, 1919, near Bedford, Iowa, to Joseph LeRoy Lucas and Lena Pearl Stutesman Lucas. He was one of eight children.
Ivan grew up in the country, helping his family with farming operations. He graduated from Bedford High School. He was married to Selma Lorraine Huntington on June 14, 1941. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1991. They are the parents of five children: Dena Lucas of Houston, Texas; Dr Tim (wife Joan) Lucas of Pella; Vicki (husband Phil) Maltzahn of Grand Island, Neb; Mitzi (husband Mike) Magnuson of Lincoln, Neb; and Ada (husband Craig) Calendine of Omaha, Neb.
Ivan served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He spent most of his life farming and selling feed for livestock. In 1965, he retired from farming and moved into Lenox, opening Ivan's Car Wash which he owned and operated until 1994.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox and served as an Elder and Trustee. He was also a member of the Lenox Rotary Club, Lenox Golf Club, and served on the Lenox City Council for four years.
He is survived by his wife and children: nine grandchildren; sisters Marie (husband Estel) Larison, Doris O'Dell and Vadoon Price, all of Bedford; and brothers Van[e] and Ronald, both of Bedford.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kenneth and Max.

Lucas, Joseph LeRoy - Funeral services for Joseph LeRoy Lucas, 94, long time resident of the Bedford area, were held in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home September 2 with Carl Cummings officiating. Mr Lucas died August 31, 1976, in Bedford Manor. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.
Joseph LeRoy (Roy) Lucas, son of Joseph and Flora Ellen Stingley Lucas, was born February 11, 1882, at Parnell, Missouri.
Roy was the youngest of a family of seven children, consisting of two sisters and four brothers, none of whom survive.
He spent his youth on the family farm near Parnell. He attended a rural school which, on Sunday, served as a Methodist church, where he was baptized when a youth.
He was united in marriage to Lena Pearl Stutesman on August 24, 1901. They were privileged to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary before Mrs Lucas died April 2, 1962. They were the parents of eight children, seven of whom survive and live in Taylor County.
Until he retired he had spent his entire life farming, first in the vicinity of Parnell and Sheridan, Mo., but for the past 60 years he has lived in the Bedford area. Moving with the times he progressed from small horse drawn machinery to the large tractor farming. For many years he was a renter, later he owned his own farm, and he always took pride in the appearance of the farm where he lived.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, four brothers, his wife, one son, Kenneth, one granddaughter and two great grandsons.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs Estel (Marie) Larison, Mrs Herman (Doris) O'Dell and Mrs Ralph (Vadonna) Price; and four sons, Vane, Max, Ivan and Ronald; three sons-in-law; four daughters-in-law; 25 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren and one great great grandson.
He will be remembered as a good husband and father, greatly loved by his entire family and a good neighbor and friend to many, many people. He greatly appreciated the fellowship and fine care he had while a resident of Bedford Manor.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Lucas, Kenneth Emery - Funeral services for Kenneth Emery Lucas, 58, of Bedford, were held April 7 [1971] at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Carl Cummings and Rev Ollie Odle officiating. Mr Lucas died at his home here April 4, 1971. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.
Kenneth Emery Lucas, son of Joseph Leroy Lucas and Lena Pearl (Stutesman) Lucas was born February 4, 1913 on a farm northeast of Bedford, only four days after the parents and family moved into Iowa from Missouri. He was the fifth child in a family of eight children.
As his health would permit, he attended grade school at the Clayton Center School, and was graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1931, of which he was president at the time.
At six years of age he was stricken with tuberculosis of the hip bone from which he suffered greatly. At the age of eight, he entered the University of Iowa Hospital for Children, where he spent the next 16 months in traction, and year around outdoor exposure. This was followed by numerous trips to and from the hopsital for a number of years. The attending physician, Dr Steiner, often used him as a specimen when lecturing to students of the medical profession. He would usually start his dissertation by telling these students that "only faith and the will to live" had permitted him to survive this ordeal.
On February 23, 1930, he was baptized into the Christian faith at the First Baptist Church in Bedford.
In 1936, he moved to Bedford, and with his brother, Vane, operated the Phillips Gasoline and Service Station at the present location for two years. At that time the partnership was dissolved and Kenneth contiued that operation until 1943.
On May 20, 1937, he was united in marriage to Blythe Lorene Damewood. To this union was born one son, Kenneth Dean Lucas, now married and living with his wife, Kathi, two children, Natalie Dee and Mitchell Scott, at Pella, Iowa.
In 1943 he felt the need to assist in the military efforts of World War II and decided to leave the Phillips business to join LaPlant-Choate Mfg Co., in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he advanced to Chief Time Study Director in the Standards Department of that company.
In late 1945, he and his family returned to Bedford where he has served in sales and service of animal food supplements with Moormans, Foxbilt, and the past 18 years with Lucas Products Company of Bedford. The last two years he spent in the office on production and inventory control. During his career he made many friends and performed many valuable services for livestock producers over a wide area of southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife, Blythe, on March 10, 1971, (only 26 days prior to his passing) and his mother on April 2, 1962.
Besides the son, Kenneth Dean and family, he is survived by his father, Roy Lucas, age 89, who lives at Pearl Terrace Manor in Bedford; seven brothers and sisters and their husbands and wives; Marie (Mrs Estel Larison of Bedford); Doris (Mrs Herman O'Dell) of New Market; Vane and Max of Bedford, Vadonna (Mrs Ralph Price) of Gravity; Ivan of Lenox; and Ronald of Bedford and a host of friends and neighbors who know, understood, respected and loved him.
Kenneth will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Lucas, Max LeRoy - Funeral services were held Saturday, July 12, 2:00 pm at the Bedford Baptist Church for Max Lucas. The minister was Rev Ted DeHass and interment was at Fairview Cemetery.
Max LeRoy Lucas, son of Joseph LeRoy Lucas and Lena Pearle Stutesman was born at Sheridan, Missouri, on April 2, 1911, and departed this life July 9, 1986 at his home in Bedford, Iowa, at the age of 75 years, 3 months, and 7 days.
His parents were farmers in Missouri, but they moved to Taylor County, Iowa, where Max grew to maturity. He attended the rural school system and high school in Bedford. Max was a member of the First Baptist Church for over 50 years.
On October 20, 1934, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Pauline Mohler, daughter of Frank and Carrie Mohler of rural Bedford. The couple was married in the Mohler farm home. Max and Dorothy resided on a farm just north of there. To this union two sons were born, Donovan and James. In 1984 Max and Dorothy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Max and Dorothy continued farming, eventually purchasing the Mohler farm where Max tilled the land and raised cattle and hogs. Max loved the challenge of farming and was an expert at all the specialties that occupation requires. He was progressive, always looking for a better way to do things.
In 1960 Max purchased the Lucas Hog Yard where he bought market swine for the packing plants. In 1963 they moved to Bedford, and he operated the hog yard until 1976 when he entered retirement. Max and Dorothy spent their retirement years traveling, especially to Florida, and made their winter home in Fort Meyers, Florida, where they have many friends.
Max was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Kenneth; one brother-in-law, Herman O'Dell; one sister-in-law Blythe; a grandson, Daniel and a great grandson, Jesse. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dorothy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donovan and Joyce, James and Kay; three brothers, Vane, Ronald, and Ivan; three sisters, Marie Larison, Doris O'Dell and Vadonna Price; ten grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
Max cherished his family, including his parents, brothers and sisters, wife, sons and their families. This family entertainment was the focus of the life he loved to live.
His love and care will be greatly missed by us all.

Lucas, Ronald Oren - Ronald Lucas was born northeast of Bedford in Taylor County to Roy and Pearl Lucas on January 28, 1923. He passed peacefully into rest on May 22, 1998. He was 75 years old. Ronald grew up in the Bedford area and attended Bedford school, graduating in 1940.
He served in the Army from December 1944 to October 1946, serving some time in Japan. On November 9, 1949 Ronald and Annabelle Johnson were united in marriage. Together they raised one daughter, Judy. He was a member of John F. Hardin Legion Post #164, the V.F.W., and a member of the First Baptist church in Bedford. He also served as treasurer of the church for 11 years. Ronald worked at Lucas Products with his brother, Vane, for 27 years. He also worked at Beemer Oil and at Farmer's Mutual Insurance. He enjoyed league bowling for many years. He once bowled a perfect 300 game. He enjoyed traveling with his family and especially spending time with his brothers and sisters and other family, and Ron enjoyed carpenter work.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Annabelle; and daughter, Judy, and husband Bob Hilton of Shenandoah; five grandchildren; Joy and husband Steve Carder of Spokane, Washington; Patty and husband Don Vavra of Omaha, Nebraska; Ron and wife Alicia Shannon of Wichita, Kansas; Don and wife Cathy Shannon of Abilene, Kansas; and Jennifer Hilton of Shenandoah; thirteen great grandchildren: Joshua Lucas, Melyssa, Caitlin and Linnea "Zoey" Shannon, Kimberly and Scott Vavra, Ronnie and Kristopher Shannon and Amanda and Samantha Mobley, Ryan, Saraha and Triston Shannon. One brother, Vane and wife Margaret Lucas, and two sisters, Vadonna Price and Doris O'Dell. Also many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Roanld were held at Novinger Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford on Tuesday, May 26, 1998 at 10:30 am. Ted DeHass officiated. Burial, with full military rites by John F. Hardin Legion Post #164 of Bedford, at Fairview Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Pearl Lucas, three brothers, Kenneth, Max, and Ivan, and one sister, Marie Larison.
He will be missed by all who knew him. He was a kind, considerate, loving husband, father, grandfather. Ron loved deeply, found goodness in everyone and gave acceptance, love and affection.

Lucas, Vane Basil - Vane Basil Lucas, son of Roy and Pearl Stutesman Lucas was born March 28, 1909 at Sheridan, Missouri. The family lived on farms in Missouri and Iowa. Vane received his early education in rural schools and graduated from Bedfod High School in 1926.
He was united in marriage to Margaret Damewood in 1934. They are the parents of a son, Vane Basil, and a daughter, Margaret Elaine. They lived in the Bedford area first on a farm and later, Vane, with his brother, Kenneth, owned and operated the Phillips 66 Oil Station in Bedford.
After a time, he began what would be his most treasured work-related life, selling Ford automobiles. He was Ford's regional top salesman and often recalled the stories and customers related to that time.
During Wolrd War II the family moved to Cedar Rapids where he was employed as chief dispatch clerk for LaPlant-Choate Manufacturing Company, a heavy equipment manufacturer for the United States government. In 1946 the family returned to Bedford. Vane joined the work force of Foxbilt Feeds of Des Moines. Vane was assigned various Midwestern territories in a number of states. He was given the responsibility of sales instruction and the development of animal nutrition at Colfax, Iowa. In 1953 at Bedford he founded Lucas Products Company manufacturing nutritional products for livestock animals. Vane actively sought to build his company on service to his customers through well trained and well treated sales personnel. In 1980 he sold the company.
Retirement activites included writing an autobiography entitled, "County Boy, PH'd," the creation of numerous drawings and pictures, traveling and spending time on "Pig Hill," an acreage on the edge of town. Vane was a generous man providing for the welfare of others whenever he saw that need.
Throughout his life he dedicated himself to the service of his community through his church, the Lion's Club, and the Democratic Party, and was the recipient of many honors presented by these groups. At one time Vane was elected and served as mayor for the town of Bedford. He was particularly proud of his service on the Board of Trustees of Sioux Falls College in South Dakota, his participation in the building of the Baptist Church in Clarinda where he served as lay speaker, and the building of the Bedford Medical Center. He also served on the committee that built the Bedford Nursing and Rehab Center. He constructed a smaller scale chapel which is located on the grounds of the historical museum in Bedford.
Vane cherished his family. He continued to seek ways to add value to the lives of his parents and seven brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews and his in-law family. His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were supported and uplifted by his caring affection for them. Margaret was the great love of his life. Their devotion to one another over 70 years of marriage has been an outstanding example of love and commitment.
Vane Lucas died July 22, 2004 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa, at the age of 95.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Bedford; daughter Elaine and son-in-law Scott Mason, Humboldt, Ia; and daughter-in-law Judy Lucas, Bryn Maur, Pennsylvania; grandchildren: Christine Lucas, Mary and Robert Schrader, Vane and Ginger Lucas, Lincoln and Dawn Mason; great grandchildren: Adam and Maggie Schrader, David Lucas, Alexander and Max Mason; sisters-in-law Dorothy Lucas, Selma Lucas and Annabelle Lucas; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Vane Basil; grandsons, Mitchell Shawn Lucas and Miles Mason; brothers, Max, Ivan, Kenneth and Ronald; sisters, Marie Larison, Doris O'Dell, and Vadonna Price. |
