Tom and wife Kay of Lincoln, Nebraska, their families, and the family
members of his departed brothers. Also surviving him are Wilma's
sisters, Alberta Calvin and her husband James, Hazel Stoaks, Lela
Spoonemore, their families, and the family members of Wilma's
departed brothers and sisters.
Dick lived virtually all of his life in Lenox. He attended Lenox
schools, graduating in the Class of 1939. During his high school days,
he was an accomplished athlete, playing on the basketball team that
competed in the State Tournament in 1938. With the onset of World
War II, he entered the United States Army, serving with distinction
from 1943 to 1945, primarily in Greenland. Wilma and Dick were
united in marriage on November 7, 1945, shortly after Dick returned
from military duty, and he began working in Lenox with his father as
an electrician. He then worked at Davis Elevator, followed by Country
Boys Elevator and Tote Systems, until he retired in 1981.
Dick devoted his life to Wilma and his family, but also spent countless
hours involved in a variety of civic and community activities. He
was a
member of the Lenox United Methodist Church for over 50 years,
serving as the Head Usher for most of those years. Dick was
Commander of the Lenox American Legion Post for a period of time
during his almost 60 years as a member. He was also an active member
of the Lenox Rotary Club, the Taylor County Veterans Affairs
Committee, and served as a volunteer fire fighter for many years.
Known as "the weatherman", Dick was the local area weather
recorder, receiving a distinguished service award from the United
States Department of Commerce for 45 years of service.
Most people acknowledged that Dick had a tremendous recollection of
the history of Lenox and the surrounding area. He enlightened us with
stories about his life in Lenox, and could ride the streets and country
roads and remember the history of almost every house and building.
He enjoyed bowling, golf and the art of simple conversation among
friends, particularly when the subject involved the history of Lenox.
Who will ever forget when he jokingly used the term "knot head"
to
describe a particularly ornery animal or maybe even a person in one of
his stories about life in Lenox? Wilma and his family have fond
memories of Dick setting up camp at the Iowa State Fair and in
Branson, Missouri, enjoying Wilma's great cooking and putting up her
Christmas decorations, and playing cribbage and 500 at family
gatherings.
May God grant comfort and strength to those who mourn
Richard's passing. |
