Bennett, Ivan Warner - Ivan Warner Bennett, age 85, of Lenox, Iowa entered eternal rest on Sunday February 9th, 2014 at the Greater Regional Hospital in Creston, Iowa following a brief hospital stay.
Ivan Warner Bennett was born southeast of Lenox on April 25, 1928 the oldest child of William Donald and Bernice Margaret (House) Bennett. He was baptized in the Clearfield Christian Church and changed to the Clearfield Methodist Church when he married. He attended two country schools and graduated from Clearfield Community School in 1947 where he was active in sports. He and a classmate hitchhiked to South Dakota and worked the wheat fields for a summer. Ivan met C. Jane Bliss in 1947 and they married on March 26, 1950 in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. They were blessed with five children: Diane, Marilyn, Barbara, Keith and Tim.
Ivan lived his entire life in Platte Township, as did his father Donald. He farmed with his father and later his two sons and was especially proud to own two Century Farms, one each from his mother and father's family. Ivan worked part-time hauling propane for Spurrier Brothers and also drove a school bus for Clearfield School's extracurricular activities. He was also a 4-H leader for the Calvary Go-getters. Ivan and Jane were members of the Seventeen Card Club and the Clearfield Lion's Club. He served on the Clearfield School Board, MFA Board, Lenox Sunrise Apartments Board and over thirty years as a committee member for the Taylor County FSA.
Ivan and Jane moved to Lenox in 1991. Ivan joined the Seniors Golf League while they continued to love watching their grandchildren participate in school and 4-H events. They cared for the four youngest grandchildren while their parents worked. They enjoyed traveling and took many trips with family and friends. They also enjoyed camping many years at the Iowa State Fair with the Clearfield Lion's Club. Jane passed away in February, 2003. Ivan continued to be active on the farm. He moved to Vintage Park Apartments in 2009 and he moved to the Lenox Care Center after suffering a fall in November of 2011.
Left to cherish Ivan's memory are his children: Diane (Roger) Knudson, Omaha, Nebraska; Marilyn (Bob) Hildner, Berkley, Michigan; Barbara (Jim) Parrish, Lenox, Iowa; Keith (Jacquie) Bennett, Lenox, Iowa and Tim (Janet) Bennett, of Clearfield, Iowa. Sixteen grandchildren: Jill (Knudson) and Brian Dyer, Kelly (Knudson) and Kyle Warren, Bree Hildner, Megan (Hildner) and Rick Wood, Lauren Hildner, Andy and Brenda (Israel) Parrish, Dane and Lisa (Shawler) Parrish, Cody Parrish and fiancé Kristen Leonard, Marc Parrish, Nicole Fry, Sean Bennett, Hannah Bennett, Logan Sheffield, Tyler Sheffield, Cory Bennett, and Dillon Bennett; twelve great-grandchildren; Special friend, Darlene Freeman; two sisters, Lois Rodman of Lenox, Iowa and Joan Parker of Omaha, Nebraska; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ellen and Harry Steele, Pinedale, Wyoming and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Ivan was preceded in death by his wife Jane, his parents; brother-in-law Daryl Rodman, and niece Debra Ramsey.

Bownes, Ettie M. Older -
Mrs Thomas (Ettie M) Bownes, 86, of Clarinda died Thursday afternoon at her home at 414 W Grant St.
She was born Dec 14, 1885, near Blockton, la, the daughter of William and Jane Fursey Older. In 1903 she was married to Thomas Bownes at Grant City, Mo. They farmed in the Tabor and Thurman communities before moving to Clarinda 25 years ago.
Mrs Bownes is survived by her husband of the home and three children, Mabel Biggerstaff and Vilas Bownes of Clarinda, and Mrs Dale (Viola) Elmore of Seattle, Wash. There are 16 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. A brother Jay Older lives at Kearney, Mo. A son Verl preceded her in death in 1941.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home with the Rev Earl Melton and the Rev Jack DuBrava officiating. Grace Johnson was soloist and Aletha Hutchings organist. Flower bearers were Linda Williamson, Maria Reusch, Kathy Rosewall and Lori Rosewall.

Funeral services were Wednesday, June 16, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home for Mrs. Hobert (Elizabeth M.) Briggs, 88, of Gravity, with Bruce Chrouser officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove cemetery at Guss.
She died suddenly Sunday afternoon, June 13, 1993 while preparing to go to Clarinda. She became ill at her home and died before arriving at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda.
She was born January 7,1905, in Adams County, Iowa, the daughter of Gerhardt and Augusta Donath Ziehe. On January 26,1935 she was married to Hobert Briggs who survives. She was a member of the Gravity Christian Church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three children: Robert Glen Briggs, Clarinda; Mrs. Rex (Marguerite Lucille) Davis, Gravity; and Karen Sue Larson, Carson. Brown, Jodene Laverne Schuster - Jodene Laverne Brown was born July 29, 1926 in Athelstan, Iowa to Honey and Ralph Schuster. She departed this life on January 19, 2014 at the Creston Hospice House at the age of 87.
Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. on January 23, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield, Iowa with Rev. Shurmaine McAlpine officiating. Visitation was held at the church on Wednesday, January 22, 2014

Jodene Laverne Schuster was born July 29, 1926 in Athelstan, Iowa to Honey and Ralph Schuster. She departed this life on January 19, 2014 at the Creston Hospice House at the age of 87.
Jodene attended school in Blockton and Maloy. She graduated from Maloy with the class of 1942.
On May 10, 1946 she was united in marriage to Elton Bruce Brown. They moved to Clearfield where all three of their children were born: Marilyn, Carolyn, and Jerry. In 1960, they purchased their present day farm two miles north of Clearfield.
What Jodene loved most about life was her family! It always brought a smile to her face to watch her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids in their many activities, such as sports, music, and dancing. Jodene also spent many hours cooking, doing crafts, gardening, traveling, shopping, bird watching, and even country dancing until she was 80 years old. Together Jodene and Elton enjoyed many years at the Iowa State Fair camping with the Clearfield Lions and spending their winters in Las Vegas.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Marilyn Maltzahn, her husband Steve of Creston, and their daughter Traci Tamerius, her husband Mike, and children Jessica of Greenfield and Alex of Creston; daughter Carolyn Nelson of Clearfield, her good friend Steve, Carolyn's daughter Dana Snyder, her husband Eric, and their children Megan and Kyle of Grimes, Carolyn's son Danny Nelson, his wife Shannon, and their children Ethan and Xander of Ankeny; son Jerry Brown, his wife Sheila of Clearfield, and their son Brooks Brown of Clearfield, his good friend Tori, and their daughter Amber Rikkels, her husband Ben, and their children Quentin and Kenzi of Ankeny.
Jodene also leaves a brother-in-law Laverne Brown, sisters-in-law Annabell Brown and Bernice Brown, a dear family cousin Bobbie Rood of Vancouver, Washington, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jodene was preceded in death by her husband Elton in 1999, her parents Honey and Ralph Schuster and Elton's parents Allie and Hazel Brown. She also lost brother-in-laws; Kenneth, Rex, Joe and Dolan, and sister-in-laws; Maona, Mildred, and Virginia.
Jodene was a very kind and considerate person, always thinking of others first. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She is free. Peace has come at last

Buxton, Garland J. - Garland J. Buxton, age 86, of Lenox passed away on February 10, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Garland was born on August 12, 1927, to Rolland and Ruth (Edwards) Buxton in Lenox. He attended Lenox Schools, graduation in 1945. After graduation he served two years, 1945-1947, in the United States Army, serving in World War II while being stationed in Anchorage, Alaska and Sandusky, Ohio.
Following his honorable discharge from the service he enrolled in college at… Simpson College. While at Simpson he was a member of the ATO fraternity. He received his BA in education from Simpson. Garland continued his higher education at Drake University in Des Moines. While at Drake he earned his Masters in Education and also a Specialist degree. Garland spent most of his teaching career in Des Moines, teaching English at Brody and Goodrell Schools.
Garland is survived by his sister Katherine Ann (Cleatie) Devine, of Des Moines, Iowa; nephews Michael B. Devine LLM of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England and The Reverend Timothy P. Devine of Seattle, Washington. Many Buxton cousins and their families also survive.
Garland is preceded in death by his parents and great niece Lauren Devine.

Memorial services for Margaret Cavner, 77, of Rapid City, were Wednesday, July 14, at 1:30 p.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Pastor Chris Blain officiating. Burial was in Conway. Cavner died at the Clarkson Mt. View Guest Home in Rapid City on Sunday, July 11,1993.
Margaret Eleonora Karinen was born February 24, 1916 at Karinen, SD to John and Amanda (Wickstrom) Karinen. As a child she moved with her family to Rapid City where she attended school and graduated in 1934. She worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone as an operator. She married Samuel A. Cavner on May 15, 1937 in Rapid City. She spent the next 20 years raising her family. She served as a Girl Scout leader and adult trainer for 11 years. She was the executive director of the area Girl Scout council for one year. In 1957, she went back to work for Northwestem Bell, retiring in 1971. She moved to Cody, Wy, Clarinda, Spearfish, SD, Claremore, Ok and back to Spearfish, SD in the years following retirement. She moved to Rapid City the end of last year and lived at the Clarkson Mt. View Guest Home.

Cooper, Dennis Ray - Celebration of Life Memorial Services for Dennis Cooper, age 65, of Bedford passed away at his home Saturday, January 25, 2014. Celebration Services will be held Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 11:00 AM at the United Christian Presbyterian Church in Bedford. Visitation will be held Wednesday at the Ritchie Funeral Home from 3 - 7 with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7. Our beloved, Dennis Ray Cooper passed from this life on January 25, 2014, at his home in Bedford, Iowa, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. Dennis was born July 13, 1948, to Ann Katherin Krohmer Cooper and Dale Marion Cooper at Clarinda Iowa Hospital. After graduating from Clearfield High School, he went to Universal Trade School in Omaha, Nebraska, to train in auto mechanics.
On July 9, 1967, he was united in marriage to Connie Sue Sobotka. To this union was born four beautiful children: Jackie DeLee, Wendy Gayle, Darcie Rae, and Devan Owen. In addition to their biological children they also enjoyed opening their home to others including: Dina Grant and family, foreign exchange student Cyril Sabra, and many of their children’s friends.
Dennis served nearly seven years in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, in which he spent many hours in flight as crew chief of a KC135 fuel tanker. Upon his honorary discharge, he returned to Iowa with his family. His livelihoods upon return included manager of a Skelly gas station in Red Oak, Iowa; City Mail carrier for 27 years in Bedford, Iowa; and farmer in the Clearfield and Bedford areas for over 35 years.
Dennis enjoyed racing stock cars as a hobby in his younger days. He graced the oval tracks of Mt Ayr, Iowa; Rapid City, South Dakota; and Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Dennis enjoyed traveling with his wife and family. They took many vacations, in which they explored places and visited friends and family members. In celebration of their 40th Anniversary, they took a trip to London and Paris with their life long friends, Harlan and Dee Davenport of Round Rock, Texas.
Left to cherish his loving memory are his wife of 46 years Connie Cooper of Bedford, IA; children and grandchildren Jackie (Peter) Cooper-Bennett, Aidan and Noah, of Milton Keynes, England; Wendy (Matt) Poore, Danielle and Kirsten of Huntley, Illinois; Darcie (Neil) Cooper, Sadie and Nate of Cameron, Missouri; son Devan Cooper of Denver, Colorado; parents Dale and Ann Cooper of Lenox, Iowa; brother David (Deb) Cooper of St. Louis, Missouri; sisters Sandee (Chuck) Dickenson of St. Charles, Iowa, and Sheryl (Butch) Newton of Skidmore, Missouri. Damewood was born February 4, 1932 near New Market, the daughter of Merle and Pauline Greeley Harland. On February 27,1951 she was married to Darrell Damewood who survives.
She was a member of the Hillside Missionary Church, organist for many activities and active in numerous community organizations including piano teacher, Farm Bureau, Gideon Auxiliary and 4-H.
Survivors include her husband Darrell of the home, two daughters Mrs. Arlan (Denise) Hoskins, Mitchell, SD, Mrs. Brian (Delora) Jamison, St. Joseph, Mo, and Douglas and wife Ana Damewood, Corona, Ca, five grandchildren, parents, Merle and Pauline Harland of Clarinda, brother, Max Harland of Perry.
Funeral services were held Thursday, August 26, 1993 at Hillside Missionary Church with Rev. David Miller officiating. Burial was in Dallas Center cemetery at New Market. Shirley Ann (Guss) Fidler was born September 28, 1934 in Hacklebarney, Iowa; a daughter to Glenn William Guss and Eula Irene (Mortiz) Guss. She graduated from Nodaway High School in 1952 as the class salutatorian.
Shirley married her sweetheart, Jird Malvin Fidler, on October 28, 1954 at the Naval Air Station - Navy Chapel in North Island, California. Four daughters were born to this union: Cheryl, in Iowa; Pamela, in New Mexico; Trina, in New Mexico; and Janeen, in California. In spite of the difficulties inherent with raising a family while her husband was, at times, called away for months at a time in service to our country, she was the model of a supportive military wife and a superlative mother to her girls, all of whom credit her for being both their rock and their inspiration.
Shirley passed away February 18, 2014 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 52 years, Jird, sisters, Roma Ingersol and June Balog, and sister-in-law Wendy Guss.
Shirley loved to paint and was a gifted artist. A talented seamstress, she even delved into tailoring to make suits for Jird. She shared her passions with all her daughters and encouraged their creative gifts as well. She was a marathon thrift store shopper, and auction attendee. The thrill of the hunt for a bargain was something she pursued with gusto and a devilish grin and consequently, all her family’s homes benefited from her generosity and discerning eye. She liked to play Bingo and was a regular in Nodaway on Friday nights. All three generations of her descendants, from her eldest daughter to the youngest great grandson, where crazy about her, because most of all, Shirley was a supportive, loving, caring confidant and friend to her entire family.
Surviving Shirley are her daughters: Cheryl and soulmate Ronald Classen of Villisca, Pamela Cass of Red Oak , Trina Johnson and husband Tracy of rural Corning, Janeen Hall and husband Vernon of Villisca; grandchildren: Sara Benton of the West Coast , Abigail Shipp and husband, Thomas of Red Oak , Benjamin Jird Cass of California , Sonja Govig and husband Travis of Villisca , Katie Wagaman and husband Kaleb of Red Oak , Nichole O’Briant of Villisca, Jesse O’Briant and wife Crystal of Villisca , Jeremiah Burton of Chillicothe, Missouri, and Kirstin Hall of Villisca; great grandchildren: Josiah, Jonah, Annie, Piper Ann, Maxamas, Malakeye , Montgomry, Drake, Dakota Jird, , Emma and two more babies on the way; siblings: Ronald (Joanne) Guss of Virginia, Merwin (Wanda) Guss of Florida, Janet Echternach of Clarinda, Wayne Guss of Utah, Sandra (Gail) Kinser of Villisca and Joan (Larry) Purdue of Griswold, and many, many nieces, nephews, and friends

Brandi Rachelle Fitzpatrick was born in Manhattan, Kansas, on August 3, 1989. She was a tender, loving soul who loved God, animals, helping people, especially helping those who were less fortunate than others. She was very giving, kind, forgiving, and loving to all. She enjoyed taking walks with her mom, cooking, collecting key chains and solving brainteaser puzzles.
Brandi had been a student at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, and had received a scholarship due to her academic excellence.
On Saturday, January 4, 2014, shortly before 6:00pm, Brandi (age 24) died unexpectedly while at her parent’s home in Bedford, Iowa.
She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Penny & Rick Lilly of Bedford; her grandparents Dan & Neva Regal McPeck of Indianapolis, Indiana; Pearl & Toby Lilly of Pomme De Terre, Missouri; and Evelyn & Hayes Fitzpatrick of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is also survived by her siblings: Cassi Meelhuysen, Kirsti Fitzpatrick, Wyatt Fitzpatrick and stepbrothers Brice and Cody Lilly.

Funeral services for Theda Gourley, 75, of Villisca, were held Friday, August 6, at Wolfe Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Riegel officiating. Burial was at Arlington Cemetery near Villisca.
Theda Wynona Gourley, daughter of Frank and Alice Vaught Denney, was born January 12,1918, in Taylor County, and died Tuesday, August 3, 1993, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center, where she had been a resident for the past year.
Gourley graduated from Clarinda Community High School in 1936. On October 30, 1937, she was married to Willis Gourley. Together, they farmed in Montgomery County.
Gourley was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers; Homer, Leonard and Paul and three sisters; Layle, Mable, and Wayve. She is survived by her husband, Willis Gourley of Villisca, four daughters; Mrs. Marvin (Sandra Louise) Smith of Nodaway, Mrs. Jerry (Judy Ann) Davis of Bedford, Mrs. Byron (Karen Sue) Davis of Waterloo and Mrs. Larry (Sherry Jo) Maxwell of Lincoln, Ne, 11 grandchildren, 7 greatgrandchildren, two sisters-in-law; Marjorie Sims of Clarinda and Elinor Matula of Aurelia, as well as one sister-in-law, Esther Denney of Tarkio, Mo.

Graham, Roy, Jr - Roy Graham, Jr., 87, of College Springs, formerly of the Bedford/Guss area entered into peace Tuesday, Feb. 4 at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda. Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 15 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda with Pastor Norman Hoag officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 9:30-10:30 a.m. (service time) at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will be in the Memory Cemetery, New Market at a later date. Memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s Hospital.
Roy Graham, Jr. was born July 1, 1926 at Siam, the son of Roy Graham, Sr. and Bertha (Armett) Graham. He attended school at Hepburn and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1944. Roy served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps 1944-1946. He served in Air Rescue Unit in the Philippines. He was united in marriage July 18, 1948 to Jean M. Keller at the Christian Church Parsonage, Clarinda. They were blessed with three children, Randy, Linda and Marcia.
Following his discharge from the service Roy worked for Page County in various capacities until 1952. Roy farmed for many years in the Villisca/Guss area. In 1976, he moved to Bedford and had a trucking business until his retirement due to health in 1991 and moved to College Springs.
Farming was an enjoyment to Roy and when his health forced him to quit, he still enjoyed the outdoors. He and Jean belonged to a camping club and he took great pride in keeping his yard looking good. He enjoyed fishing and spending time traveling around the country. Roy and Jean spent fourteen years wintering in Arizona. Family and friends were important to Roy and he enjoyed spending time with them.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles Graham and wife Betty; sister-in-law, Clauda Graham; one granddaughter, Traci, in infancy; two grandsons, Brad and Brenton Graham.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 65 years, Jean Graham of College Springs; son, Randy Graham and wife Lynn of Red Oak; daughters, Marcia Hoag and husband Tim of Afton and Linda Rowen of Huachuca City, Ariz.; four grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; five great, great grandchildren; brother, Richard Graham of College Springs; nieces; nephews and many friends.
Roy will be missed by his loving family and friends. He will be forever in their hearts. May God grant comfort and peace to those who mourn his passing

Hawn, Merlyn D. -
Merlyn D. Hawn, 53, of rural Clarinda died suddenly at his home Saturday morning, July 31,1993.
He was born December 7,1939 at Conway, the son of Orham and Helene Neville Hawn. He graduated from Conway High School and served in the U.S. Navy for 12 years. At the present time he was a sales representative for Color Dot Graphic—Graphic World of St. Louis, Mo.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy and five daughters, Robin Bullington of Stanton, Rhonda Hawn of Clarinda, Ramona Cobum of Council Bluffs, Raquel Hawn of Council Bluffs and Nola Hawn of the home. There are seven grandchilden.
Brothers and sister are Alice Poison of Bedford, Lowell Hawn of College Springs, Rex Hawn of Bedford and Norman Hawn of Bedford.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Daryl and Herman.

Larry was born April 10, 1940 to the late Howard and Elnora Hoffman in Grand Island, Nebraska. He married Julie Goodwin on June 7, 1964 in Dewitt, Iowa.
Larry retired from Purdue University where he was Department Head of Electrical Engineering Technology and also Professor. He previously worked at Iowa State University, Rochester Institute of Technology and Eastman Kodak Company. Dr. Hoffman received his BS, MS and PhD from Iowa State University. Larry was an avid bicyclist, riding solo across the United States in 45 days in memory of his son Bradley. He also rode TRAM (The Ride Across Minnesota) for 20 years raising money in support of MS Research. Larry enjoyed working in his yard, garden and work shop, singing in a barbershop chorus, riding his motorcycle and playing with his restored 1940 Minneapolis Moline Tractor. Over the years he was active in his church, Lion’s Club, Boy Scouts, Kiwanis and the Salvation Army. Larry is survived by his wife, Julie; daughter Colleen; sisters Cecile (Larry) Cozad, Mariann (Ken) Harlan, Carolyn (Bob) Towers; brother David Hoffman, many cousins, nieces and nephews. Johnson, Calvin Wesley -Last rites for C.W. Johnson of Guss were held at the Guss church, Tuesday afternoon, June 5 with Rev Clarence Moore of Clarinda officiating. Burial was in the Guss cemetery.
Calvin Wesley Johnson, son of George Washington Johnson and Marilda Cutbirth Johnson, was born Oct 13, 1882 on the farm near Guss, Iowa, in Taylor county, where he lived his entire life. He passed away at his farm home on Sunday, June 3 at the age of 79 years, seven months, 21 days.
He was married to Sarrah Emma Holland at Guss on Dec 18, 1907. To them were born six sons: Floyd Allen of New Market, Loyal Albert of Nodaway, Francis Ervin of Brooks, A. Delbert, George Walter and Wilber Lloyd, all three of Nodaway.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Clarence Edward.

Marilyn V. Jensen, 63, of Colorado Springs, Co, died September 1, 1993 at a hospital there. Memorial services were held Tuesday, September 7, 1993 at St. Paul's Methodist Church. Cremation is planned.
Jensen was born January 29,1930, in New Market to Lester and Alice (Eden) Vanhorn.
She was a School District 11 secretary since 1958, a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church and the District ll Secretaries Association. She graduated from University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.
Jensen married Robert A. Jensen on November 5, 1976, in Colorado Springs.

Kendrick, Murl B. -
Murl B. Kendrick, 98 of rural New Market, died early Monday moming, Nov. 21, 1994 at Good Samaritan Care Center, Villisca, where he had lived for the past four years.
He was born Sept. 25, 1896 near New Market, the son of Tunnis and Ella Roberts Kendrick. He lived on this same farm his entire life until entering the care center.
On Dec. 15, 1915, Kendrick married Martha Mauderly who preceded
him in death Jan. 19, 1988.
Kendrick is survived by two sons: Chester Kendrick and Thelbert Kendrick, both of New Market. There are eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, Cleo Lessner, and five brothers and sisters.

Funeral services for Willis King, age 97 of the Blockton area, who died
Thursday, September 5, 2002, were held Saturday, September 14, 2002, at 10:00 a.m., at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Ted DeHass officiating. Interment was held in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah, Iowa. Memorials can be given in his name.
Willis Perry King was born January 12, 1905, on a farm near Blockton, Iowa, the son of Art King and Clara Fredrick King. The family lived on several area farms. Willis attended grade school in Grant City, Missouri and graduated from Bedford High School in 1926. On October 23, 1930 he was united in marriage to Frances Stewart of Bedford in Troy, Kansas. The couple farmed at various places in Taylor County before making their home on a farm on the Ringgold-Taylor County line in 1940. In 1973 Willis and Frances retired to Shenandoah, Iowa where Frances died in 1982. Willis married Fern Overman on September 17, 1983 in Grant City, Missouri. They made their home first in Shenandoah, then moved to Blockton in 1984. Ill health forced them both to move to Clearview Home in Clearfield, Iowa in 1992, where Fern preceded him in death in 1999.
Willis was a member of the Christian Church. Willis was always very handy and completely renovated the homes on the farm and in Shenandoah. While farming, Willis did carpentry work in the winter and continued to do carpentry work after moving to Shenandoah. He enjoyed woodworking and spent many hours upholstering, refinishing and rebuilding wooden furniture, making knick-knacks and refurbishing clocks. He enjoyed traveling to visit his family, see relatives and attend family reunions. Willis enjoyed the farm life and being outdoors.
Willis is survived by a son, Gary King and wife, Carolyn of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Frank King and wife, Opal of Bedford; three sisters, Bessie Reed, Russellville, Missouri, Mary Carson and husband, Herb, Bedford, and Doris Hopson, Sacramento, California; three grandchildren, Elinor King, Oxford, Iowa, John King, Haverton, Pennsylvania, and Mary King Bradley and husband, Michael, Jenkintown, Pennsylvania; one great granddaughter, Grace Kimes, Oxford, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Leola "Peggy" June (Huntsman) Kountz-Rice was born June 21, 1927, in Vanzant, Missouri the daughter of E. E. Huntsman and Thurza J. (Buchanan) Huntsman. She grew up in the Clearfield, Iowa area where she attended country school. She met Harold Kountz through her brother, Earl Huntsman, during World War II. The couple were united in marriage on August 18, 1945 in St. Joseph, Missouri. To this union two sons were born, Bob and Jerry. The couple lived in St. Joe where she was a homemaker caring for her boys. In 1962, she started working for the St. Joseph School District as the Cafeteria Manager, a position she held for 25 years. In 1977, her husband Harold passed away. Peggy continued working another 10 years until her retirement in 1987.
Peggy married Mike Rice of Lenox on October 29, 1995. She moved to the Lenox area to live on the Rice farm south of Lenox. Mike passed away October 7, 2012. Peggy then entered the Lenox Care Center where she resided until her death.
Peggy enjoyed music, having played guitar and singing with her brother Earl on Radio Stations in the late 1940's. After her marriage to Mike, they formed a band with Dick Bremmer, Mary Wurster and Linda Spring performing at nursing homes and meal sites around the Lenox area. She enjoyed craft shows, ceramics and garage sales. Peggy and Mike enjoyed traveling covering much of the United States. She enjoyed babysitting her grandkids whenever she could. She possessed a tender heart and held a special place for all children. Peggy was an active member of the Brookdale United Presbyterian Church in St. Joseph, Missouri prior to moving to Lenox. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Left to cherish Peggy’s memory are her two sons, Bob Kountz and wife Kris of Corpus Christi, Texas; and Jerry Kountz and wife Tanya of Bonham, Texas; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; the entire Rice family and a community of friends and extended family.
Preceding Peggy in death are her parents E.E. Huntsman and Thurza Huntsman; her first husband Harold Kountz; her second husband Mike Rice; three brothers, Lowell (Bunk) Huntsman; Earl (Peeny) Huntsman and Nolan Huntsman; and two sisters, Opal Cone and Daisy Rice.

Larson, Verlin Duane - Verlin Duane Larson passed away peacefully on February 28, 2014, at age 83 surrounded by his family at the Clarinda Regional Health Center in Clarinda, Iowa.
Verlin was born on November 16, 1930 in northern Page County, Iowa, the third of nine children of Herby and Lillie (Johnson) Larson. He attended country schools around Hawleyville and New Market, and graduated from New Market High School in 1949. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951-1953, then returned to open and operate Larson Lockers in New Market for 17 years with two of his brothers. During his working years Verlin also managed the New Market Super grocery store, farmed, did plumbing, insulating & electrical jobs; worked for the New Market lumber yard, and finally as a Taylor County road maintenance operator before retiring.
He was very active in community service, including President of the New Market school board, President of the Civic Club, Cub Scout leader, town council, American Legion, 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, and numerous positions in the New Market Church of Christ, including Sunday school teacher, deacon and treasurer. Verlin loved hunting, fishing, and working the family farm.
He married Shirley (McAlpin) Larson on September 2, 1954; Verlin was very proud that they had been married for 59 years. They raised four children: Randy Larson and his wife, Janet, reside in Merrimac, Massachusetts; Mark Larson and his wife, Terri, of Magnolia, Texas; Tim Larson and his wife, Angie, of New Market, and Amy (Larson) Skeries and her husband, Alex, of Cedar Rapids.
Also left to cherish his memory are three brothers: Merrill and wife, Harryette, and Lyndall and wife, Joyce, of New Market; and Darwin and wife, Sharon, in Fargo, ND; five grandchildren: Joe and Mashel Larson of New Market, Nicole Larson in Magnolia, Texas; Shane Elliff and wife, Brooke, of Magnolia, Texas, and Ryan Elliff and wife, Jenny, and their children Rylie & Ezra, of Silsbee, Texas, plus many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Verlin was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Ruby (Larson) Wilson and Donna (Larson) Hill; and by three brothers: Bradley, Dallas and Gary.
Funeral services will be conducted at the New Market Church of Christ on March 3, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. A visitation will be held at the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda on March 2nd from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Memorial tributes can be made to the Verlin D. Larson Memorial Fund.
Verlin was a husband, brother, grandfather and loyal friend to many people. To his four children, he was more than just a father; he was our friend and our hero. LaRue, Maclyn E.
Maclyn E. LaRue was born on a farm near Dows, Iowa, May 19, 1926, the son of Ernest R. and Josephine Evanda Evans LaRue. Raised in Wright County, Iowa, he graduated from Oakland Township High School, Popejoy, Iowa, in 1943. He then furthered his education at Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, graduating with his Bachelor of Science Degree with an Agriculture Education Major in 1947. Mac began his agricultural professional career in 1947 in Sloan, Iowa, where he was the Vocational Agriculture Teacher at Sloan Community Schools. On October 7, 1948, Maclyn was united in marriage with Audrey J. Peterson in Sioux City, Iowa, and their union was blessed with five children: Annette, Claire, Janelle, Alan and Philip. They made their home in Sloan where Mac continued to teach until 1953, when the family moved to Bedford, Iowa, where Mac served as the Taylor County Extension Director from 1953 until 1961. The LaRue’s moved to Denison, Iowa, in 1961, where Mac served as Crawford County Extension Director until completing his thirty year Extension Career, retiring in 1983. Four years after moving to Denison Mac’s wife, Audrey, age 37, lost her battle to cancer on January 25, 1965, leaving Mac to raise their five young children. On April 8, 1971, Maclyn was blessed to be united in marriage with Janet L. Prueitt Halverson in Denison where they made their blended home. Following his retirement from the Extension Service Mac was elected to the Crawford County Board of Supervisors where he served for four years from 1985 through 1988. During his tenure as a supervisor he was influential in developing the Crawford County Recycling Program. Mac and Janet spent their retirement years where Mac had more time to pursue his hobbies of traveling, camping, fishing, hunting, gardening, County Fair judging, and especially enjoyed spending more time with his grandchildren. Throughout his life Mac was a very active member of his church and community. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison, having been baptized at the Collegiate Methodist Church in Ames, Iowa, in 1945. He served as a Young Adult Sunday School Teacher and served on many committees including: Education Unit Final Fund Drive Chairman; Finance; Memorial Committee; Lay Leader; United Methodist Men and their chairman; Sioux City District Council of Ministries, serving as chairman; and a Sioux City District Member of Church Development Committee. While living in Bedford, Iowa, he was a member of the Bedford Lions Club and Jay Cees. In Denison he was a 52 year member of the Sylvan Lodge No. 507, A.F. & A.M., serving as Master three different terms and as their treasurer; Denison Kiwanis Club having received their George F. Hixen Fellowship Award in December of 2013; Denison Golden K Club and a past president; Midwestern College Board of Directors; WESCO Board Member and secretary for four years; four year member of the Elderbridge Agency on Aging and Chairman of the Board; Epsilon Sigma Phi Fraternity for 25 years; Iowa State University Extension Association for 30 years and their treasurer; was active in the American Cancer Society having served as State Crusade Chairman, State Board Member, County Crusade Chairman for 40 years and was their Memorial Chairman; and was an honorary member of 4-H in Crawford County being active in securing donors for the state 4-H foundation and the state 4-H camping center having especially enjoyed the 4-H camps through the years. Mac was well respected in his Extension Service Career receiving the R.K. Bliss Extension Citation in 1971, the first year it was offered, as an outstanding extension educator and also received the distinguished service award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. During his tenure in Crawford County, Mac helped organize the West Iowa Dairy Herd Improvement Association, Crawford County Pork Producers, Crawford County Cattleman’s Association and the West Central Iowa Feeder Calf Producers. One of Mac’s outstanding Extension accomplishments had been maintaining a strong Farm and Home Management program which he began in Taylor County under a Kellogg Grant teaching management concepts to over 400 farm families on a one to one basis. His accomplishments in the agriculture and Extension fields will be long remembered. Maclyn died Saturday afternoon, January 4, 2014 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 87 years,7 months and 15 days. Including his parents, Ernest and Josephine LaRue and his first wife, Audrey LaRue, Maclyn was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Lou Rasmussen and one grandson, Phillip Leeper. James Morris, age 68, of Shenandoah, Iowa, formerly of Bedford, Iowa, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Westridge Care and Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be 7-8 p.m., Saturday, April 12, 2003, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, Iowa. A memorial will be established. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
James Richard Morris was born December 28, 1934, in Gay Township of Taylor
County, Iowa, to Vilas Lester Morris and Ella Ruth (Salen) Morris. Jim was a 1953 graduate of Blockton High School. He was united in marriage November 25, 1987, at Bedford, Iowa, to Kathy Sickels who survives. Jim farmed in the Athelston/ Blockton area until the 1980's, He was a hard working man and loved working with his tractors and his cattle. He worked Saturdays at the Bedford Sale Barn. He also worked for Dalton Land and Livestock until 1993. Another thing Jim enjoyed was taking care of lawns and mowing. He was greenskeeper for the Bedford Country Club for several years and later on he kept busy in the summer by mowing lawns. He was also a school bus driver for 20 years for the Bedford Schools. Jim had a natural talent for handling the students and developed many lifelong friendships with them. He enjoyed watching his sons and nephews wrestle in high school and college. In later years, he became a big fan of Nascar racing and watched races at the local tracks and TV. He loved cooking and shopping for groceries, playing with the cats at home, listening to country and western music, and vacationing in Colorado. He loved being with his family and having his grandchildren with him. Jim always had a joke to tell, laughed easily and had a smile for everyone. He loved doing things for people and was a good friend. Jim was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all.

Rose Retzer Relatives received word Nov. 28, 1994 of the death of Rose (Fine) Young Retzer, 97, who had been residing at a nursing home in Norton, Ohio for several years. She suffered a heart attack.
According to her only child, Robert Young and family, 92 Ninth St. NW, Barberton, Ohio 44203, services are pending for Friday or Saturday at Camphfield Hickman Funeral Home,
Barberton.
Rose was the youngest, and the last to be deceased, of the Doug and Nealy Fine family which had six children. Claude Fine, Hopkins, Mo., and Ralph Fine, Siam, were her brothers.

Zella C. Ridenour, 83, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, July 10,1993, at her sister's home in West Des Moines, where she was visiting.
Services were held at the New Market United Methodist Church Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Blair Rohde-Frank of New Market United Methodist Church officiated.
Burial was in the Old Memory Cemetery in New Market.
Survivors include: her sons, Robert of Vinton, Richard of Cedar Rapids; three sisters,Thora Collins of Des Moines, Giovanna Ries of West Des Moines and Burdine Baker of Lone
Tree; two brothers, Jerald Cunningham of Des Moines and John Cunningham of Sacramento, Ca.
Also surviving are her daughters-in-laws, Lois of Vinton and Carol of Cedar Rapids, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one granddaughter.
She was born May 19, 1910 in Lorirnor to Rev. John and Pearl Booth
Cunningham. Her mother died when Zella was an infant. Her father then married Agnes Imus in 1911. Zella graduated from Bedford High School
in 1928.
Zella and Orville Ridenour were married June 13,1928. They farmed in the Bedford, Gravity and New Market area for many years. They then lived in New Market and Bedford until his death in 1985. Zella moved to Vinton and Cedar Rapids to be
closer to her sons. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. She was pianist at the Gravity United Methodist Church for many years and organist at the New Market United Methodist Church for 21 years. Savage was born in New Market on January 31, 1914 to Paul and Nora Maxwell Savage. He married Helen Mae Akeson August 7,1934, who preceded him in death. He was united in marriage to his second wife, Ruth M. Larmer on January 26,1979.
He was a retired contractor and farmer. Savage was a member of the Wilcox United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men of The Wilcox Methodist Church.

Schrader, Lola "Maxine" Walters - Lola Maxine Schrader was born November 29, 1925 in Clarinda, Iowa, the daughter of George Wesley and Violet Mae (Gray) Walters. She passed away on Thursday evening, March 6, 2014 at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 6 days.
Maxine grew up in the Villisca area and graduated from Villisca High School. She later attended Clarinda Junior College for two years. On June 11, 1945 she was united in marriage to Kendall D. Schrader in Lyman, Iowa. This union was blessed with two children, Mike and Janet.
Maxine taught school at Frog Pond School for several years. She then stayed home and raised her children and working on the farm before going to work for Hy-Vee in Villisca. After moving to Shenandoah, she worked for Krieglers Office Supply. She was a member of the United Methodist Church both at Guss and Shenandoah. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and caring for her flowers. Her true love was her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kendall in 2009.
Survivors include her children, Mike Schrader and his wife Nancy of Des Moines, Iowa, Janet Dukes and her husband Mike of Essex, Iowa; her grandchildren, Angie Clark of Garden City, Kansas, Bryan Schrader and his wife JoAnne of Corpus Christi, Texas, Angel Dawson of Essex, Iowa, Kristi Clark and her husband Jeff of Clarinda, Iowa, Shane Dukes and his wife Megan of Essex, Iowa, Leslee Dukes, Christian Dukes and Alyssa Glassgow all of Essex, Iowa, Peter Trost and his wife Annie of Waukee, Iowa, Adam Trost and his wife Leah of West Des Moines, Iowa; ten great grandchildren, JJ, Maddie, Demi, Amadeo, Colton, Hunter, Ainsley, Reagan, Ellie and Caleb; a brother, Ronnie Walters and his wife Connie of Guss, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Darrell Schrader and his wife Delores of Nodaway, Iowa, Reba Maxwell and her husband Gerald of Villisca, Iowa; along with many other relatives and friends

Funeral services for Leonard Ralph Smith were held Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003 at the Blockton Christian Church. Blockton American Legion Post 443 conducted military rites. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.
Leonard Smith, son of Ralph and Millie (Bentley) Smith passed away at his home in Blockton on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
He was born November 29, 1928 at Blockton, Iowa. He attended school and graduated in 1947 from Blockton High. In 1948 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving four years during the Korean War. After his time in the military, he schooled in electronics for a year.
On July 5, 1956 Leonard was united in marriage to Sandra Byers of Clarinda. To this union two children were born, Rick and Kim. He lived most of his life in the Blockton community. He worked for Blockton Oil and Northern Propane and was an x-ray technician at the Ringgold County Hospital. He served as mayor of Blockton for two terms and on the city Council. He developed the EMS System in Blockton that they now have and in 1980 was awarded EMT of the year by the Central Iowa EMS Council. He was involved in getting Blockton Community Betterment started. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the Blockton Community Building committee.
Leonard was an avid fisherman, hunter and photographer. He was a self-taught skillful individual who could accomplish anything. He gave up his hobbies due to health reasons and took up a chair in front of the computer and enjoyed the world of internet with his family and new friends from all over the country.
Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, Cecil, Lloyd and Ivan; his mother and father-in-law, Olin and Pearle Byers.
Left to mourn his passing and cherish his memories are his loving wife Sandra of home; son, Rick and wife Rose of Creston; daughter, Kim and husband Jim Walker of Council Bluffs; six grandchildren, Sherri, Josh and Rachel from Creston; Steven, Eric and Fae Walker of Council Bluffs; and one great granddaughter; Haley Jo, who was his pride and joy; also four nieces and one nephew; several cousins;

Smith was employed at Cudahy Packing Company and Lucas Products, both of Bedford.
He was a member of the John F. Hardin American Legion Post #164, Bedford. The post assisted with part of the services .Smith was in the Army and served in the South Pacific during World War II.
Smith is survived by his wife, Nell, of the home, step son Larry A. McGee and wife Judy, Omaha, Ne., two step grandchildren, brother, Marvin Smith, Bedford, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Hamblin, in 1944, his parents, brother, Delmar, and sister, Pauline Hooper.

Weir, Shirley Jean Pickering - Shirley Jean Weir was born March 20, 1927 in Bedford, Iowa the daughter of Delno and Edith (Larison) Pickering. She was born in Bedford and spent her first seven years of her life in Orvin, Iowa and spent the rest in Bedford. Shirley grew up on the farm and lived six miles south of Bedford. She spent her growing up years helping in the fields and with farm and household duties with her dad and mother. She went to school for just 8 years at Eagle School in Ross Township. Her high school years she lived with seven other girls at Mrs. Ward Roberts going home on weekends. After graduation Shirley taught one year at Liberty School and met J.T. Weir and they were married on December 24, 1946. She taught one year in Jackson Township. They lived south of Bedford for seven years then moved into Bedford and lived at the same home for forty-three years. Shirley and J.T. were married fifty three years when J.T. passed away in 1999. In 2002 she moved to Bedford Nursing and Rehab center. She loved her home at Bedford Nursing and Rehab Center. In June 2006 Shirley moved to Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda which she dearly loved the staff and residents and made Goldenrod her home. She was a member of New Life Church and enjoyed attending Church . She loved to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. While at the Goldenrod care center she enjoyed folding wash clothes and passing clothes protectors to the tables. She enjoyed her many friends and was blessed every day to know them.
Shirley passed away Sunday evening, June 8, 2008 at Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Mark C. Pickering and his wife Ruth.
She is survived by son Milton Weir; daughter, Patricia Suitor, Omaha, NE; grandchildren: Wesley Miller and Michelle and their children Sarah Miller, Olivia Miller and Maggie Riley all of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Cindi Fry and Ryan and their children Brooke Brophy and Alexis Brophy all of Omaha, Nebraska; and Sandi Knowski and Mike and their children Jordyn Motsinger, Trever Motsinger, and Mikey Jr Knowski all of Omaha, Nebraska; and many other dear friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Bedford with Pastor Bob Thompson officiating. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford. Mrs. John (Carol Lynn) Whiting, 43, of Montclair, Ca, died Saturday night, July 31,1993.
She was the daughter of Edward and Wilma Murren Frodsham of New Market. She was born August 29, 1949, in Pennsylvania. Whiting was a computer operator.
She is survived by her husband John, parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frodsham of New Market, one sister, Lori Frodsham, and two nephews of New Market.

Funeral services for Helena Eveline Scherbarth Williams, 93, will be held Tuesday, August 17, at 1:30 p.m. in the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. She died August 14, 1993, at Goldenrod Manor.
Visitation is to be from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Walker-Merrick. Interment will be in the Dallas Center Cemetery north of New Market. Rev. Blair Rohde-Frank is to be the officiating pastor.
Williams was bom May 12,1900, in a sod house in Loup County near Burwell.Ne, to Christian and Emilie (Garska) Scherbarth.
On February 28, 1924, she married Williams T. (Bill) Williams. They moved from Gretna, Ne, to a farm near Guss, in Taylor County, living there 12 years. In 1938 they moved to the Gravity community, later purchasing a farm in Dallas Township in 1943. The couple was engaged in farming all their married life.
They had three children, Marcella Ingram of Coming, Myles Rosser, who died in infancy, and Norman of New Market.
Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill in 1965, infant son Myles in 1935, three sisters, seven brothers and three
infant siblings.
