My dear Sir or Madam,
Enclose you will find a bundle of photographs
that were rather ruthlessly torn from the "Waight
Family Album, Taylor County, Iowa 1880." I
found them in a Roger's Arkansas Flea Market
and decided to send them home. As is the case
with so many of our old photos, few are identified.
However, they do have a better chance of stumbling
on to some kinfolks in Iowa than they do in Arkansas, I am sure!

Dr William
Waight, wife Mary and their older children were born in England. They
settled in Illinois, evidently near Knox county where several of these
pictures were taken, and then moved to Lenox, Taylor County, Iowa
by 1880. They are gone from Taylor County, I believe, by the time
of the 1900 census. Please check in my census records and newspaper
file for more data on them.
(Letter No 1)
Dear Patricia,
I was interested in the photographs of Dr William WAIGHT
and his family shown on the Taylor County Website. I believe
that Dr William WAIGHT is one William Frederick WAIGHT born
in Melksham, Wiltshire, England in 1839 to George WAIGHT and
Elizabeth (nee SIDNELL). William Frederick WAIGHT married
Mary Jane HOUSE in 1867 in Taunton, Somerset, England. I understand
that the William Frederick WAIGHT and family emigrated to
the States around 1870.
Three brothers of William Frederick Waight: Henry, George
and Thomas also emigrated to the States in the 1870s. Brothers
Edwin (Ned) and John, along with sister Annie remained in
England. Other sisters of William Frederick are thought to
have been Elizabeth/Eliza, Sarah, Mary and Julia. I believe
these four girls died young. William Frederick WAIGHT's mother
Elizabeth SIDNELL is my 4 x great aunt. Elizabeth's sister
Ann SIDNELL is my 3 x great grandmother (she married
James Henry BUTTERWORTH in Melksham in the 1830s). Ann and
Elizabeth SIDNELL are the daughters of Thomas SIDNELL and
Sarah GALE.
I was wondering if you have any more information on the
WAIGHT family or indeed whether you know of any others researching
this family. If any of the photographs have been identified
that would also be great to hear about. I am in touch with
one Mary Ann Freed Jones, a descendent of Thomas Sidnell WAIGHT
(brother of William Frederick WAIGHT).
With kind regards, Louise Argent. Somerset, England

(Letter No 2)
I have only just discovered that four WAIGHT brothers
emigrated to the US from Melksham in the county of Wiltshire,
England. I have found out a little more since I sent yesterday's
e-mail. I will send you a further e-mail with a word document
attached with all the information I know on the WAIGHT family
both in England and in the US. Please feel free to use as
much information as you would like for the web page. I understand
that Dr William Fredrick WAIGHT and his family did remain
in Iowa, in a place called Leon. I am afraid I do not know
my US geography well enough to know where that is in relation
to Taylor County.
I will also contact Mary Ann Freed Jones (descendent
of Dr William Frederick WAIGHT's brother Thomas Sidnell WAIGHT
who went to Illinois in the 1870s) as she may have more information.
I also have come across a Glenn WAIGHT descendent of another
brother (Henry WAIGHT who went to Sharpsburg near Pittsburg
in the 1870s) but am still waiting to hear from him.
Another brother also went to the US, George WAIGHT, but
I believe he never married. I have also discovered that at
least two sisters did survive into adulthood - Annie and Mary.
These two remained in England along with their brother Edwin.
Mary married a George OLIVER and moved to Dorchester in the
county of Dorset, England.
There are certainly towns by the name of Salford and Fareham
in England. Salford is in the north of England near the city
of Manchester in Lancashire, quite a distance from Malksham
in Wiltshire (in the south of England).
At this stage I have no idea of a WAIGHT connection with
Salford. (Apparently Thomas Sidnell WAIGHT did live in York,
although some distance from Salford, in the north of England
before going to Illinois.)
Fareham is in the county of Hampshire (in the south of
England) and Hampshire and Wiltshire share a border. Since
the photograph is dated 1886 (several years after William
Frederick WAIGHT left England) I wonder if this is a photograph
of perhaps a niece or nephew of either William Frederick WAIGHT
or his wife Mary Jane (nee HOUSE)? I also note that one of
the photographs is of a Bessie HOUSE. Very likely a relative
of Mary Jane's - perhaps a sister or sister-in-law?
I came across your web page by accident. Having discovered
that William Frederick WAIGHT emigrated to the US I typed
in 'Waight Iowa' in the search engine and was delighted to
see the web page come up. I will send the attachment later
today (once I have sorted all my information out!). Thank
you for responding so quickly. I will certainly keep you informed
of anything else I may find out about the family. Kind regards,
Louise

(Letter No 3)
Dear Pat,
I have had an e-mail today from a Glenn WAIGHT of East
Liverpool, Ohio. It transpires that Glenn is the great nephew
of Dr William Frederick WAIGHT. Glenn's grandfather was Henry
WAIGHT, younger brother of William Frederick. He is looking
out some family history details for me. I am passing details
of the Taylor County website on to Glenn as I do not think
he knows about the photos. I imagine he will contact you but
should you like to contact Glenn direct his e-mail is: waight@raex.co.us
I also made contact a few days ago with Mary Ann Freed
Jones. Mary Ann is the 3 x great niece of Dr William Frederick
WAIGHT. She is the 2 x great granddaughter of Thomas Sidnell
WAIGHT, William Frederick's elder brother. Again I have informed
Mary Ann of the Taylor County website and I imagine she will
be in touch. I am not sure where Mary Ann lives - I think
it could be Illinois. Should you wish to contact Mary Ann
her e-mail address is: majones@adams.net
Also I have discovered that indeed there was a photographer
by the name of J T See at Fareham, Hampshire, England (photo
#134) and also a photographer by the name of W. Hill of New
Windsor, Salford, Lancashire, England (photo #135). So these
too photographs were definitely taken in England. I also wonder
if photograph #148 was taken in England. In the late 1800s
there was a photographer by the name of Samuel Good working
in Seaton, Devon, England. Bessie HOUSE (photograph #139)
I now suspect to be the niece of Mary Jane HOUSE (Mary Jane
being the wife of William Frederick WAIGHT). I am amazed how
much information on the WAIGHTs of Melksham, Wiltshire I have
stumbled on in the last few days. I hope my next e-mail will
give you some interesting information to add to your website.
Dr William Frederick WAIGHT had several children, surely
there must be some direct descendants of his out there somewhere?
Best wishes, Louise.

Thursday, October 24, l9l7
THOMAS S. WAIGHT was born in the town of Melksham and County
of Wiltshire, England, on the llth day of June, l834, departed
this life at the home of his daughter, MRS. ROBERT SHAFER, near
Redding, Iowa on Saturday, October l3th, l9l7 at the age of
82 years and 5 months. He was united in marriage to EMILY MILLARD
KELSON in the month of August, l867 and to this union were born
eight children, two of whom died in infancy leaving six surviving
to mourn his loss: THOMAS EDWARD, EMILY ELIZABETH FARMER, JESSIE
ANNIE SHAFER, GEORGE EARNEST, CHARLES HENRY, and MARY AGNES
KNIGHT.
He embraced Christianity in early life and throughout his earthly
career adhered strictly to the principles which were eminently
exemplified in his death as a Christian. During the last 6 or
7 years of his life he made his home principally with his niece,
MRS. GEORGE W. PENNIWELL, of Leon, Iowa, where he was intimately
known and loved by all. Funeral services were held in the M.E.
Church at Redding, Iowa and the remains buried at the Middlefork
Cemetery.
18 Oct,1917 Obituary ?Leon Herald
Thomas Sidnell Waight was born in Melksham, Wilther Co., England,
11Jun1835. Departed this life 13Oct1917, age 82 years,
4 months, 2 days. He was married to Emily Millard Kelson
1Aug1867. Mr and Mrs Waight emigrated to this country
in the spring 1870, making their home in Illinois, until about
1900 when they moved to Ringgold Co, IA. Here he
resided on the farm in Middle Fork Township until the fall of
1911. Since then he has been making his home with his
daughter Mrs. Robert Shaffer. He has been ill for the
past eight weeks and during his last days he was a great sufferer
until death came to relieve him from the afflictions of this
mortal life. Mr Waight was a member of the Methodist Church
of Redding and lived a constant Christian life from early manhood,
exemplifying great stability of character in adhering strictly
to the things he believed to be right. In 1904 the companion
of his life was taken from him and the great loss he sustained
at that time was almost more than he could bear. The deceased
leaves to mourn his loss three brothers; George of Alexis, IL,
Fred of Leon, IA; and Ned and one sister Annie Waight of Melksham,
England, also three sons, Thomas of Alexis, IL, George of Redding,
and Charlie of Portland, Oregon, also three daughters, Mrs.
Elizabeth E. Farmer of Clinton, MO; Mrs. Jessie Shaffer, of
Redding, and Mrs. Mary A Knight of Mt. Ayr, one son and one
daughter having preceded him to better land in infancy.
He also leaves several grandchildren and friends both old and
young who will miss Grandpa Waight as he was best known to all.
All the children except one and two brothers were with him to
the last.

24, 1835, and departed this life July 27, 1926, at the ripe
old age of ninety one years, two months, and three days.
He leaves to mourn his passing one brother Dr. W.F. Waight of

a number of great and great-great-nieces and nephews. He grew
to young manhood in the neighborhood of his birthplace, the
immigrating to this country settled in Montreal, Canada for
a time, then moved to Quebec where he remained for a number
of years. After making several trips back to his old home,
on returning to the States for the last time, he came to the
vicinity of Shanghai, IL, where he made his home for the last
forty-five years, taking an active interest in the events of
the community, and as far as is known was the oldest man in
Warren County.
His last illness was of short duration early in the morning
he was up and dressed, remarking that he felt good; but about
10 o'clock a sudden change was noticed, and he failed rapidly,
sinking into his last sleep at 11:15 of Tuesday morning.
Funeral services were held from the United Brethren Church of
Alexis Thursday afternoon July 29, 1926, at 2 o'clock with the

Dear Pat,
Well here it is - rather a long document, 13 pages in all. I've
gone back as far as William Frederick WAIGHT's maternal grandparents.
Most of the information is about the WAIGHTs that went to the
US. My real interest is the SIDNELL and BUTTERWORTH line but
I'm enjoying this diversion branching out on the WAIGHT family
tree. It just seems so sad that the photos ended up in a flea
market torn from their album. There must be direct descendants
of Dr William Frederick WAIGHT about somewhere.
Sorry it is such a long read but I hope you will find some of
it interesting enough to put on the web with the photos.
Mary Ann Freed Jones has information about more recent descendants
of Thomas Sidnell WAIGHT and no doubt Glenn WAIGHT will have
information about the descendants of Henry J WAIGHT.
It sounds cold where you are! The clocks went back to GMT on
Sunday so we are back to dark evenings. I must go because it's
really late and I've got work tomorrow.
Best wishes,
Louise.

(Letter from Pat O'Dell to Louise
Argent)
Louise,
I looked at records that would be the WPA Grave Records of Decatur
co, Ia and found these:
Leon Cemetery:
Wm F. Waight, 1839-1930
Mary Jane Waight, 1845-1927
And these... that I think you already had:
Middlefork Twp Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa:
Thos Edward Waight 1835, died 13 Oct 1917
Emily Waight 1841, died 08 Sep 1904

Dear Pat,
Just thought I would let you know that I printed out the photographs
from the WAIGHT family album and took them to show my mother
(nee BUTTERWORTH). The common link between the BUTTERWORTH and
WAIGHT families being SIDNELL.
We compared likeness to photographs of my grandfather (Howard
Fawcett BUTTERWORTH - great grandson of Ann SIDNELL) and great
grandfather (William Frank BUTTERWORTH - grandson of Ann SIDNELL
). William Frank BUTTERWORTH was the son of Henry George BUTTERWORTH.
Henry George BUTTERWORTH in turn was the son of Ann SIDNELL
and the nephew of Elizabeth WAIGHT (nee SIDNELL). (Thus Henry
George BUTTERWORTH is the first cousin of William Frederick
WAIGHT and his brothers.)
In particular there is a very strong family resemblance between
my grandfather, great grandfather and the subjects in the following
pictures:
#134 (taken at Fareham, Hampshire, ENG);
#138;
#141 (particularly the young man on the right of the picture);
#148 (taken at Seaton - I think this is possibly Seaton, Devon,
ENG rather than the US);
#152.
(I wondered if photos #138 and #152 were of the same man taken
several years apart? Purely a guess but I wonder if this is
Dr William Frederick WAIGHT?)
Certainly a few of the young women / girls look very alike and
I wonder if they are some of the daughters of Dr William Frederick
WAIGHT.
Sorry I cannot help more in identifying the photographs but
I thought you might like to know we saw an obvious family likeness.
Unfortunately I do not have access to a scanner, but should
I do so in the future I will send a picture of my great grandfather
William Frank BUTTERWORTH.
With very best wishes,
Louise.
