NOTES:[1] Sources: Book of Records kept by Clyde Milton Boatman; census records; Canadian homestead records; and personal narrative by Clyde Marion Boatman.

[2] In 1880 census at 28 years old, George W. Lewellen lists his profession as plasterer. He was also a brick mason and sometimes brickyard owner.

[3] George W. Lewellen’s parents moved to Pattonsburg, Missouri, then back to Iowa where his father enlisted in the Army.

[4] George W. Lewellen was 11 years old when his father was killed in the Civil War and often spoke of his father to his grandson, Clyde Marion Boatman.

[5] In 1909/10 the Lewellen families, relatives and friends left Taylor Co. Iowa and homesteaded in Rich Valley, Alberta, Canada, each family homesteading at least 160 acres. The Boatman/Lewellen families established and built a church there which is still standing. The Boatman family still has the nineteenth century communion set that was owned and used by George W. Lewellen when he was a deacon in that church.

[6] The Lewellen family made trips back to and resided in Iowa for a time, and by 1915 they were residing in Montana.

[7] George W. Lewellen died in the Clyde Milton Boatman residence in Portland (Milwaukie), Oregon, from complication related to diabetes.
