Guss Gets Monument At a meeting of the board of supervisors and the soldiers relief commission on Monday a contract was awarded to Jas. Salters for the erection of a soldiers monument in the Guss cemetery. The cost of the monument will be $4,400 and of this amount $700 was raised by popular subscription and the balance of $3,700 is to be paid out of the soldiers relief fund. The monument is to be a replica of the Gravity [monument] , only considerably smaller. The cost of material and labor has advanced so greatly that in order for Guss to get a monument at this time with the amount of money available the size had to be reduced. It is expected to dedicate the monument this fall. New Market Herald, March 18, 1920 |
