Slack, John W. 1873 - 1945: obit - John William Slack, was born in Ireland, May 26, 1873 and died at his home in Tingley, Iowa Aug 27, 1945. He came to this country with his parents in 1881. He was married to Viva E. Rawlings Dec 24, 1895. She passed away Jun 14, 1925. To this union three children were born, one dying in infancy. On Dec 17, 1927 he married Nellie D. McCowen and since then has lived in Tingley, Iowa the last 15 months of his life he has been an invalid. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Nellie D. Slack, a daughter, Hallene Combs, of New Market, a son George Slack of Douglas, Wyo; two sisters, Hannah Mankle of Topeka, Kans, Georgia Patton of Centralia, Wash, and a brother Isaac Slack of Shenandoah and three grandchildren; Joan Slack of Clarinda, Pfc Estel D. Combs serving in the armed forces and Lyle E. Combs of New Market, besides a host of relatives and friends.

Sunday at her home north of New Market after a short illness.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at
the home, conducted by Rev Dezell, and interment was in Dallas Center.
Mrs Slack had spent her entire life in this community
and was held in high esteem by all who knew her. She was a good wife, loving
mother and a neighbor in all that the word implies. Her death will be sincerely
mourned by the entire community.
Vivia was born Feb 5, 1873 near New Market, Iowa
and departed this life June 14, 1925 at the age of 52 years, four months,
and nine days. She was united in marriage to J.W. Slack on Dec 24, 1895.
To this union three children were born, Hallene Combs and Feol Slack of
New Market, and Luke who died in infancy.
Besides the husband and two children she leaves
three brothers and four sisters to mourn her departure. They are E.A. Rawlings,
of Denton, Kans, J.A.R. of Mercer, Mo, L.P. of Orland, Calif, Mrs F.B.
Lindsay of Yuma, Colo, Mrs M.C. Reeves, Neosho, Mo, Mrs P. Lathrop of Detroit,
Mich, Mrs B.F. Williams, of Neosho, Mo.
At the age of eighteen years she united with the
M.E. church at North Grove and through out her whole life was a living
example of christianity.

Mr VanHorn died at the age of 87 years, one month, and 21 days.
Burial was at Dallas Center Cemetery, Taylor county,
Iowa.

George Roy Vanhorn was born in Louisa County, Iowa, on November 19, 1876.
He was the son of William and Isabelle Rippey Vanhorn.
On March 18, 1903 he was married to Cora Wirth at
her parents' home northeast of New Market. To this union, one son was born.
The couple have lived in the area of New Market all their lives.
George is survived by his wife; son, Lester of Greeley,
Colo.; a granddaughter, Marilyn Reser of Colorado Springs, Colo; two sisters
and one brother, Mrs Orlena Johnson of MtVernon, Iowa, Mrs Bessie Fulton
of Zanesville, Ohio, and Lee of Colville, Washington.
Long will his family, neighbors and friends remember
George as an honorable citizen, husband, father and neighbor.
