Leaverton, John C., Feb 13, 1895 - Nov 12, 1980 (ss Flossie)

Leaverton, Jason Thomas, an old and respected citizen of this community, passed away at his home six miles northeast of New Market on Sunday.
    Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Dezell. Interment was in Dallas Center cemetery.
    Jason Thomas Leaverton, was born in Ohio on Oct 26, 1848, and died Feb 3, 1924, aged 75 years, 3 months, and 7 days.
    He came to Iowa January 1876.
    He was married to Elizabeth Lumley on March 21, 1878, and she survives him. To this union seven children were born: Leigh, who died in infancy, Guy Chester of McComa, Il, Edward Bruce of Monmouth, Il, Carl Earnest of Gravity, Earl of Clarinda, John Court of the home, and Mrs Willie Dunn of New Market. Also four grandchildren Elizabeth Maybelle, Cleo and Patricia Leaverton and Darrel Alvin Dunn.

Leaverton, Elizabeth, daughter of John and Maggie Lumley, was born in Ontario, Canada, Dec 18, 1855. She passed away at her home in New Market, at the age of 81y 1m 5d.
    She was married March 7, 1878, to Jason Thomas Leaverton. He preceded her in death Feb 3, 1924. To this union were born seven children, six of whom survive. One son, Lee, died in infancy.
    The surviving children are: Guy Chester, of Macomb, Ill; Edward Bruce of Roseville, Ill; Carl Ernest, of Sharpsburg, Ia; Earl, of Cherokee, Iowa; John Court of New Market; and Mrs Jess Clark of Gravity. There are four grandchildren. They are: Darrell Dunn of Gravity, Ia; Patricia Leaverton, Cherokee, Ia; Cleo Leaverton of Roseville, Ill; and Mrs Elizabeth Epperson, Smithshire, Ill.
    Rev Charles Arnold was in charge of the funeral service which was in the Leaverton home at New Market.

    obit - Elmer Ellsworth Leighton, oldest son of David and Mary Ellen Leighton, was born Nov 27, 1861 in Page co, Iowa.
    As a small child he moved to Illinois, and at the close of the Civil War they moved to Taylor County, Iowa.
    He was married to Loretta Frances Weaver (who died in 1917) Sep 6, 1883. They were the parents of 12 children: five died in infancy; Roy, Glenn, and Mrs J.F. (Blanche) Ridnour of Bedford; Don of Nodaway, Iowa; Mrs Opal Squires of Moorhead, Iowa; Mrs Coryl Leighton of Otis, Iowa; and Mrs (Beulah) Ray Price of Fruita, Colo.
    He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, later the Methodist Church.
    He died May 23, (1935) at New Franklin, Mo.

    She was preceded in death by a daughter Jun 27, 1930. Surviving are sons Wesley of Villisca, Wendell of Corning, Leonard of Prescott, and Weldon of Sharpsburg.

    obit - John David Mankle, eldest son of Jacob and Mary Mankle, was born near Peoria, Ill, Oct 6, 1866. He died Mar 16, 1944 at St Joseph, Mo Hospital.
    He was married to Cora Armilda Duncan Dec 9, 1903. Suriving one son, John Mankle jr, granddaughter, Jolene, sister Josephine and brother Edwin all of New Market, brother Cassius of Lecompton, Kans.

Mankle, Jacob, 1840 - 1923: #410 on veteran's list - Civil War - died Mar 17, 1923:
    obit - Jacob Mankle, one of our old and highly respected citizens passed to the great beyond on Saturday afternoon at his home in New Market. He had been in failing health for a number of years and some three weeks ago he was taken with an attack of the flu and his weakened physical condition could not withstand its ravages.
    Jacob Mankle was a man in all the name implies. Clean in mind and body he followed closely the Golden Rule in his dealings with his fellowmen. His passing will be sincerely mourned by all who knew him.
    Funeral services were held at his late home Tuesday morning at eleven o'clock, conducted by Rev J. Owen Smith, and the remains were laid away in Dallas Center Cemetery.
    Jacob Mankle was born in Germany July 18, 1840, where he grew to manhood and came to America in 1859, and settled in Peoria co, Il. In 1862 he enlisted in Co E 77 Ill Inf volunteers and served until the close of the war, 14 months of that time being spent in a confederate prison at Tyler, Texas, as a prisoner of war.
    He was united in marriage to Mary J. Hemphill, Dec 26, 1866. To this union were born 5 children who all survive.
    In 1874, he came to Iowa, first settling in Essex, then on a farm 4 1/2 miles northeast of New Market then removing to New Market where he resided to the end of life.
    He confessed faith in Christ and united with the Methodist Church in whose communion he remained faithful to the end.
    For several years Brother Mankle was in failing health and 3 weeks ago he had an attack of inlfuenza which with other complications caused his decease March 17, 1923, at the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 29 days.
    He leaves to mourn their loss 4 sons and 1 daughter as follows: John D. and Florence J. Mankle of New Market, C.C. of Topeka,Ks, George of Chicago, Il, Edwin L. of New Market. He was a member of the Masonic order and Grand Army of the Republic:

    obit - Cora Armilda Mankle, was the daughter of Alexander Duncan, a Civil War veteran and Mary Dillen Duncan. Her parents were one of the first families to settle in the New Market area. Her husband preceded her in death. She was a member of the New Market Methodist Church. Surviving are one son, John, 2 grandchildren, Richard Mankle and Mrs Joleen Moore.

    obit - Mary J. Hemphill, born Apr 30, 1874 near Robin's Nest in Peoria county, Ill and passed away Mar 17, 1936 at her home in New Market, Iowa.
    On Dec 26, 1865, she was united in marriage to Jacob Mankle and to them were born 5 children - John D., Josie, and Edwin L. of New Market; Cassius C. of Lecompton, Kans. and George of Chicago, Ill.
    They settled on the farm still in the famiy near New Market in 1874, moving to New Market in 1905.
    She was united with the Methodist Church at Dallas Center in 1874 under the preaching of Rev Brand. For several years she has been unable to go about but always remained interested in all activities about her.
    On Mar 17, 1923 her husband preceded her in death.

    Her parents moved to Dallas County when she was a small child. In 1892, they moved near New Market.
    She was a teacher when she married Dr McColm Apr 11, 1895. He died Feb 5, 1941. No children were born to them, but they raised James McDonald.
    She is survived by a sister, Mrs Charles Lathrop of New Market, brothers, Ray of Bedford, W.K. of Omaha, Nebr, and Phillip of Bakersfield, Calif.

    In 1877, he moved with his parents to Rooks co, Kans. In 1889, he entered College of Physicians and Surgeons in Keokuk, Iowa. He had done his interne work with his brother, Dr J.T. McColm in Gravity, Iowa. He came to New Market in Sept 1892.
    He was married Apr 11, 1895 to Anna I. Cameron, daughter of Mr and Mrs K. Cameron of New Market. He had 4 brothers who were doctors.
