  Barnes in Taylor County, Iowa

From: Mark Cappello markcappello@yahoo.com

Pat, Hello! My name is Mark Cappello, and I'm researching my Barnes family, who at one time resided in Taylor County, Iowa. I have gathered many old photographs, obituaries, etc., that I thought you may want to add to the Taylor County website. I wasn't sure what you were interested in, so I thought I'd email you first and include an obituary for my gt-gt-uncle Joseph M. Barnes:

From: The Taylor County Herald March 8, 1934, page 7

Joseph M. Barnes, son of George and Elizabeth Barnes, was born in the state of Indiana in the year of 1842 and departed this life at his home 8 miles southeast of Bedford February 25, 1934 at the age of 92 years, 3 months and 15 days. At the age of five years, he moved with his parents to the state of Iowa, settling near Iowa City where he grew to manhood. From there he moved to Taylor County where he spent the remainder of his life, having lived at the present home for fifty years. In the year of 1877, on May 6, he was married to Mary Tinder. To this union 6 children were born of which five are living, one son dying in infancy. Those remaining to mourn his departure are five children, two boys and three girls: Charles A. Barnes of Sheridan, Mo., Mrs. Loyal G. Burch of Blockton, Iowa, Mrs. W.R. Ritter of Shoshone, Idaho, Guy L. Barnes of Bedford, and Nellie Barnes at home. He also leaves one brother, Augustus Barnes of Smith Center, Kansas, 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren with many other relatives and a host of friends. Mr. Barnes was one of eleven children. One brother, Augustus Barnes of Smith Center, Kansas is the only surviving member. His wife, Mrs. Joseph Barnes, proceeded him in death December 29, 1931. Mr. Barnes served two years during the Civil War.
