EDUCATIONAL DIRECTORY PART 7

IOWA STATE AID FOR SCHOOLS

The 52nd General Assembly increased the state aid for Iowa schools from $3,500,000 to $13,000,000.  The following will be paid from current income each year:
General Aid .................................................$2,375,000.00
Transporation ..............................................$2,000,000.00
Agriculture Land Tax Credit .........................$2,000,000.00
Supplemental Aid ........................................$1,000,000.00
Handicapped Children.                                 $  250,000.00
Miscellaneous Aids ......................................$  375,000.00

Total .............................................................$8,000,000.00
Emergency General Aid ..............................$5,000,000.00

Total State Aid .............................................$13,000,000.00

The General Aid is a new appropriation and only good for two years.  This figures at 11c per day for grade school children and 14c per day for high school students.  Only about 90% of this will be received by the schools as the appropriation is not sufficient to pay the full 11c and 14c per pupil per day.  Tama county will receive about $77.000 per year.

The School Year
The school year in all rural and town schools should be, and is by Iowa School Laws 180 days of actual days taught and pupils and teachers present.  The only day that can be legally considered as a day taught is the one day provided by law for County Institutes.  This day may be counted as a day taught and all pupils present providing the instructor attends an approved institute sanctioned by The State Department of Public Instruction.

Iowa School Levy
The new law passed by the 52nd. General Assembly Provides:
(a)--School districts with an enumeration of 1200 or more may levy $110.00 for each resident     pupil enumerated.
(b)--School districts with an enumeration of less than 1200 and more than 250 may levy $125.00 for each resident pupil enumerated.
