Attendance Records for School District No. 4, Spring Creek Township, Tama County, Iowa, 1894-1907

These records are transcribed from two record books, sent to me by Kathy Larson. The teachers' handwriting was pretty good, but there are a few things that are hard to read, and some information is missing or obviously incorrect. I have made many notes at the bottom of the page.

The table below lists the 38 terms, or semesters, in the order in which they appear in the books. The Winter 1898-9 term appears to be missing, as it would be at the end of the first book or the beginning of the second. The column marked # gives the number of students listed in each term.

These records are transcribed from two record books, sent to me by Kathy Larson. I scanned each page, and tried to work from these images as much as possible, to avoid causing too much damage to these old documents. The pages didn't quite fit on my scanner, so I had to go back to the original to check information on the edges. If anyone is interested in seeing these images, I will be glad to send them. There are 80 images, about half a Megabyte each. I have not transcribed all the information contained in the books.

The books have attendance records for 38 school terms, from 1894 to 1907. There were 83 students in all, and 14 teachers. Some of the teachers also kept records of subjects studied, and a score for "deportment." No other grades were recorded. Most of the teachers recored the age of each student, presumably at the start of each term. Of course, there were errors, but the recorded ages could be used to determine approximate birth dates.
