Tama County, Iowa
1897 Business
Directory
|
|
The
Plat Book and Business Directory, Tama
County, Iowa, pub. A.J. Wheeler 1897
has separate Business and Farmers'
Directories. The Business Directory includes
a general listing, and an assortment of
advertisements, in various font styles and
sizes, sometimes including graphics. These
can be useful for genealogists. I have
transcribed the ads, without the graphics
and different fonts, but I'm sure that if
you find an ad for your great grandfather's
business, you will want to look up the
original. See further comments, below the
table.

More Comments
I have tried to transcribe
everything accurately. Please let me
know if you find ny errors, even small
ones. If you want to see the original,
go to Plat Book and
Business Directory, Tama County,
Iowa, pub. A.J. Wheeler 1897.
The Farmers' Directory will be
transcribed and placed on another
page.
Unlike businesses today, businesses
in 1897 Iowa almost always had
someone's name(s) associated with
them. So I have found it convenient to
alphabetize them according to
owner/proprietor's names. This is
probably best for genealogical
purposes. The few businesses without
someone's name are in the "Other"
category at the bottom of the table. I
have left out the ads for businesses
that are not in or near Tama County,
including many ads for Cornell
College, as they are of less value for
Tama County genealogy.
There are many obvious spelling
mistakes in the original. I have
transcribed them as they appear. In
cases where a name has two different
spellings, if the two are far apart in
the table, I have referred one to the
other. I transcribed and included
multiple ads by O.T. Sanborn and T.W.
Matthiesen, because they are all
different, and they do give a clearer
idea of what was important in the Tama
County business community of 1897.
Data transcribed by William
Haloupek on 15 Oct 2016. Page last
updated 16 Nov 2019 by the Tama
County Coordinator.
