Charles Lee and Polly Ann (Thorpe) Davis Family

Submitted by Deberah Davis Martinez

Great-great Granddaughter

Charles Lee and Polly Ann (Thorpe) Davis were early settlers of Crystal Township, Tama County, Iowa.  It is my hope that descendants of these children can identify their ancestor from the photos and pass the information on to others.  I have been researching this family since 1971 and would certainly be willing to share my findings.

Charles Lee Davis  b. 27 Aug 1813 Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut and died 3 Mar 1886  Crystal Township, Tama County, Iowa. He was buried in Brick Chapel Cemetery.

His wife, Polly Ann (Thorpe) Davis, was born near Rochester, New York on 8 Feb 1818. She died  9 Nov 1900  Crystal Township, Tama County, Iowa and is also buried in Brick Chapel Cemetery.

We can't figure out who is who. Here are the names of the children:

The baseball team was sponsored by F.E.Shortess who was the jeweler in Traer.  The player on the left is Fred Sherman Whannel and the player on the right was called "Laddie" (full name unknown).   Fred Sherman Whannel is the father of Leroy Whannel and the grandfather of Jay Whannel (True Value Hardware owner, Traer).

On the back it says Turners' Real Photograph, Marion, IA. We can try to date the postcard with this information taken from Penny Post Cards:
1. In 1907 Congress allowed the divided back and were produced between 1907 and 1915.
2. White borders were added to the outside of the picture to save on ink 1915-1930.
3. The price of a Penny Post Card was raised to 2 cents from 1917-1919 and again from 1925 to 1928.
4. Real Photo Post Cards were produced from 1900 to present. These cards are real black & white photos. On the back the publisher put the photo process in the stamp box. Kodac, AZO, EKC, Kruxo or Velox.

So I would guess that this Penny Post Card was made in 1915. I am still trying to find Turner Photography. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
