John William Ebersole

The Toledo Chronicle
October 6, 1910

John William Ebersole was born at Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, May 9, 1841. He was a son of Christian and Mary Ebersole, and was one of a family of ten children, the following of whom are still living: Malina, the wife of C. J. Miller, and Samuel G. Ebersole, both of Pennsylvania; Cyrus R., whose home is in Toledo township, Tama County, Iowa; Abraham L., of the state of Washington; Alice, the wife of Charley Lichty, of Luzerne, Iowa; and Mrs. Emma Rose of Pennsylvania.

The early years of Mr. Ebersole's life were spent on a farm in Pennsylvania, during which time he acquired a common school training. In August of 1862, shortly after he had passed his twenty-first birthday, he enlisted for the Civil War in Company B, One Hundred and Forty-second Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Having been wounded at Fredericksburg on the 13th of the following December, he was detailed for clerical work, and continued in that capacity until discharged from the army in August of 1865.

After his return home, he was married to Mary Catherine Johnston, also a native of Pennsylvania, on July 4, 1866, and resumed his occupation of teacher, having entered this profession when but 18 years old. In 1871 he came to Iowa, settling in Tama county, and here the family of five children grew to manhood and womanhood. He was honored by being elected to a number of public offices, all of which he filled faithfully and efficiently. His church membership has always been with United Brethren in Christ, he and Mrs. Ebersole being two of the eleven charter members of the Toledo Church. On September 26, 1910 he was called from earth at the ripe age of 69 years, 4 months, and 17 days.

Services were held at the United Brethren church with pastor S. R. Seese in charge. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery.

Those attending from a distance were C. H. Lichty and wife, of Luzerne; Clyde Stauffer of Gowrie; Mrs. Isaac Stauffer, Gladbrook; and Ed. C. Ebersole, Johnson county, Missouri.
