The Spanish-American War began on 25 Apr 1898 and ended on 12 Aug 1898, so it lasted about three and a half months. It was fought mainly in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines, and lead directly to the Philippine-American War of 1899-1902. Theodore Roosevelt wrote about the former conflict in his 1899 book, The Rough Riders. Roosevelt in 1898, at Montauk, Long Island, after returning from Cuba. After the Spanish-American War, about 29,000 American soldiers were quarantined for 30 days at Camp Wikoff, on Long Island, to prevent the spread of yellow fever and other tropical diseases. The 49th Iowa Volunteer Infantry history and departure and roster and officers The 50th Iowa Volunteer Infantry history The 51st Iowa Volunteer Infantry history and history and history and roster (Company M only) The 52nd Iowa Volunteer Infantry history Most of the soldiers listed here enlisted in the 49th Infantry, Company K, in June 1898, and mustered out on 13 May 1899. |
