to the home of his mother in Illinois Grove. Her name was Clara Grover Reese.
Elnora Bowman was born at Lisbon, Iowa, on April 2, 1863. Her father, William A. Bowman, was one of the first business men in Zearing, Iowa.
William and Elnora were married on September 11, 1886. They were the parents of seven children. The children were Orley G., Fern, Dale, Wilton L., Arba, Merlin O., and Esther.
William died on August 23, 1943. Elnora died on July 2, 1940.
Reid :
We do not have complete information about the Reid family. Vera Reid Swaggart of Eldora, Iowa, furnished partial information.
James Lincoln Reid was born at Clay Grove, Iowa, on January 26, 1861. Jennie Cruckshanke or Cruickshank was born at Donnellson, Iowa. We are not certain as to the spelling of Jennie's maiden name. Lincoln and Jennie were married in the 1880's.
Lincoln was a Zearing town clerk for several years during the early 1900's. We know that the Reid family was living in our community in 1893. Lincoln and Jennie had no children.
Lincoln died during the 1930's. Jennie was living at Long Beach, California, according to the last reports concerning her.
RHODES :
The name Rhodes was a prominent name in the Illinois Grove community for many years. Members of the family came to our community in later years.
George Washington Rhodes was born on a farm near Eldora, Iowa, on July 17, 1857. Minnie Rose Lundy was born at LaFayette, Illinois, on September 26, 1867. She came to Hardin county, Iowa, with her parents in 1868. George and Minnie were married at Eldora, Iowa, on December 31, 1884. They moved to Illinois Grove to establish their home.
George and Minnie were the parents of six children. They were Hazel, Glenn, Ila, Ella, Germa, and Cecil. Ella Rhodes Bailey Kurth, Germa Rhodes Bantz, and Cecil are former residents of our community. Ella was the owner of a Zearing cafe.
George died on January 6, 1939. Minnie died on December 24, 1955.
Preston Harley Rhodes was born at New Providence, Iowa, on April 15, 1879. He lived his entire life in or near our community. Harley was the Zearing town marshal at the time of his death. He married Maggie Reid on March 9, 1904.
Harley and Maggie were the parents of two daughters. They were Iva and Fern.
