August 21, 1981. The Collins Board of Education met on Monday, August 17, 1981. The school board election will be held September 8 with voting from noon until 8:00 p.m. Mike Mullihan is a candidate for Director at Large and Myrna Schmitt is a write-in candidate for Director District 2.
The board approved the second reading of the Board Policy raising substitute teacher pay and approved the first reading of the new Board Policy on attendance.
The Exchange State Bank of Collins was named as the depository bank for 1981-82.
The board approved a contract with the Story County Red Cross designation of school as a shelter in event of a disaster. Insurance on the school building was set at 90% of replacement cost.
Hot lunch prices were set at 80 cents for students on a ticket, 85 cents individually. Adult tickets are $1.00. Reduced price for students is 40 cents; milk is 15 cents.
The board presented a plaque to Everett and Hazel Kelderhaus, honoring them on their retirement as custodians of the school.
August 27, 1981. Collins, Nesco, and Maxwell schools had their first day of classes Wednesday and they showed a drop in first day attendance from last year's count. Collins' superintendent Betz reported that 161 students reported for classes compared to 169 a year ago. He noted 17 seniors graduated last year and this year's kindergarten class had 9 students.
At Nesco, first day totals showed a loss of 14 students from last year's 327 verses 313 this year.
At Maxwell, a drop of 13 students, 321 this year compared to 334 last year.
August 28, 1981. Hot Lunch Menu. Mon. Beef and noodles, peanut butter sandwich, buttered peas, peaches, brownie, milk. Tues. Hamburgers, lettuce salad, buttered vegetables, pudding, milk. Wed. Fried chicken, potato salad, mixed vegetables, fruit cup, peanut butter sandwich, sugar cookie, milk. Thurs. Pizza, relish or salad, corn, dessert, milk. Fri. Macaroni and cheese, meat sandwich, fruit, relish, cupcake, milk.
September 9, 1981. Mike Mullihan won the Director at Large seat with 51 votes. Incumbent Myrna Schmitt received 40 write-in votes for Director District to win.
September 15, 1981. Collins Girls vs Mingo in volleyball. Mingo won the first game 15-4 with Collins winning the second game 16-14. Mingo won the following two games 15-2, and 15-10. to win the match.
The Collins girls won the junior varsity match. Joanie Hampton was the serving leader with 16 service aces.
September 23, 1981. Myrna Schmitt and Mike Mullihan were sworn in to begin their new terms as school board members at the regular Collins School Board meeting September 21, 1981. Tom Lovig was selected President and Mike Mullihan, Vice President of the new board.
A plaque was presented to Shirley Klemme in recognition of her three years service on the board.
The bus leasing contract with Midwest Transportation Company, in Ames, was approved by the board. Mike Mullihan was selected to be the representative for the Iowa Association of School Boards Legislative Network.
