The Alien Registration Act of 1940, also known as the Smith Act, required all non-citizen residents aged 14 and over to register with the federal government at local post offices. An index to these registrations are found at The National Archives Access to Archival Databases. Characters that were unreadable in the original forms was replaced with and underscore (_). Overall the data is of only fair quality as many names seem to have been incorrectly transcribed from the original. The actual forms for people born over 100 years ago or proven deceased can be ordered from the Archives.

Note that the same person may appear multiple times in these records. For an excellent description of the Registration Act of 1940 see this blog post at History Hub.
