Story County, Iowa
1899 Ames City Directory

Search or Browse Directory

This Ames city directory was published in August, 1899. It attempts to list all individuals in the city, including occupation and address. The listings do not show the relationship between individuals, as in a census, except to the extent they may be implied by name and address. One advantage over a census is readability as they are printed rather than hand-written. Other information is contained in the directory, such as advertising and information about the city. The scope of this transcription is restricted to the individual listings.

Thank you to the Ames History Museum which created the images of this 1899 Ames City directory and made them available here. on the Internet Archive. That is the source used to create the index here. Appended to the directory is the Ames History Museum's own transcription showing the street names after they changed in 1910. Onondaga street, for example, was changed to Main street. For a complete list of street name changes, see Ames Street Names on the Ames History Museum's site.

The surviving directory is about 57 pages long, with many pages in poor condition. Numbered pages excluded the cover pages. The transcribed names were found on numbered pages 10 through 45 for a total of 36 pages.. You may search by surname above, or browse transcribed listing pages of the directory.

The following information is displayed in search results:
