Story County, Iowa 1885 Census



Search Story Co. 1885 Census Records

The census has been abstracted from microfilm (Series V221 Roll 116). This is the second enumerated Iowa State Census for Story County. The effective date of the census was 01 Jun 1885. Errors may have been introduced by the census taker or by my transcription.

Search results contain an abstract of the data for the individuals found. Views of the census pages, seen when selecting an individual in search results or when browsing the census, contain all of the census data found on that page excepting handwritten totals on each page.

The 1885 Census data is comprised of:

  • Page Number. Shown at the top of each census page view.
  • Location. Shown at the top of each census page view.
  • Post Office. Shown at the top of each census page view and on each surname search result line.
  • Enumerator's Name. Shown at the top of each census page view.
  • Date of Enumeration. This is the date the information was collected. Shown at the top of each census page view.
  • Township. The township number. Shown at the top of each census page view and on each surname search result line.
  • Range. The range number. Shown at the top of each census page view and on each surname search result line.
  • Line Number. Line number within the page.
  • Dwelling Number Numbered within each census location.
  • Family Number. Numbered within each census location.
  • Name. I have separated the surname from the given names so the surname can be used for searching.
  • Section. This is the section with in the township/range. Usually shown only for the head of household.
  • Street & No. Within cities may show the street address. For farms, the Aliquot Part is shown. (This is the portion of the section, e.g., NW NE.)
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Color.
  • S/W/M/D. Marital Status (single, widowed, married, divorced)
  • Occupation..
  • Place of Birth. Place names are have been standardized (such as spelling out full state name instead of copy abbreviations) unless the name is ambiguous. The birth place was supposed to be recorded either under County and State, or under Country if foreign-born. The county column is partially obscured on microfilm due to the curvature of the book, so is often incomplete. For example, you will frequently see "..ry" County, which is probably in most instances "Story" county.
  • Father's Nativity. N for native-born, F for foreign born.
  • Mother's Nativity. N for native-born, F for foreign born.
  • Subject to Military Duty. When present, this information is listed under the title "Various" on the census page view (not on surname search results).
  • Allowed to Vote. Applies to males over 20 years of age. When present, this information is listed under the title "Various" on the census page view (not on surname search results).
  • Alien Status. Either Alien Filed or Alien Not Filed. When present, this information is listed under the title "Various" on the census page view (not on surname search results).
  • Can not read nor write.. When present, this information is listed under the title "Various" on the census page view (not on surname search results).
  • Can read but not write.. When present, this information is listed under the title "Various" on the census page view (not on surname search results).
  • Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic. When present, this information is listed under the title "Various" on the census page view (not on surname search results).
The following information is included in the transcription but is not taken directly from the census:
