Conference Minutes
September 14 & 15, 2017

The Conference unofficially opened at the Community of Christ church in Des Moines, Iowa, 4:30 pm on Friday, the 14th. It started with registration, visiting and moving downstairs to a great dinner provided by Emiley Hickok (our chef) and more visiting. The evening was a sharing time of helping one another with web editors, connecting to the internet and various others things – and more visiting.

Saturday morning brought another a great meal in the way of breakfast while we finished registrations and getting set up for the day. Lynn McCleary officially kicked off the conference about 9 am with sharing who we are and what we coordinate and then it was go, go, go the rest of the day. This also included those attending the conference via GoToMeeting connected by their mobile devices.

We had several presentations and a guest speaker. The morning brought Web Site Stewardship – being responsible for our sites, server space, etc. presented by Conni McDaniel Hall; and, guest speaker, Larry Davis, the Secretary for SAPIC who spoke about pioneer cemeteries and the preservation of gravestones. After another marvelous meal around noon, the afternoon sessions included Recruiting Visitors and Volunteers presented by Cindy Booth Maher, and a session on Page Layout Tips with Lynn McCleary. Please see the power point presentations for the details. Afterwards, we moved into an informal round table where various subjects were discussed – copyrights, thumbnails vs. full-size photos, flip books, etc.

We were fed snacks two or three or ten times (just kidding!). As Sharon Becker said, we were grazing all day! We finished up the conference around 4 or so. Many hugs and good-byes were exchanged. Then a group of us headed to the Tavern in West Des Moines for great food that most of us weren’t hungry for, but the visiting was priceless!

Sunday afternoon, Sue Claman met Karen De Groote, Steve Williams, Conni McDaniel Hall and, our genealogy-researching chef, Emiley Hickok at the Iowa Genealogical Society. Lots to be gained with a visit to the IGS!

Looking forward to the next conference and hoping many more will be able to attend!

Sincerely,
Conni McDaniel Hall and Lynn McCleary, Conference co-chairs
