Obituary of Alexander Johnson 1798-1891
Hawarden Independent of May,7, 1891
Died: JOHNSON – At the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Storts, in Calliope, on Monday, May 4, 1891, from heart failure, Alexander Johnson, at the advanced age of 93 years.
He has been a sufferer from rheumatism for years and during the past 10 -15 years he has been an almost helpless invalid. On the morning of his death he felt as well as usual, was assisted to hi easy chair and ate a rather hearty breakfast. Shortly after breakfast he fell into a light sleep, as was supposed, and passed peacefully away, the members of the family not discovering his death until some little time after life was extinct.

Alexander Johnson was born in Washington County, Ohio in 1798. In 1833 he married Miss Root, who died in 1858. In 1862 he again married , to Mrs. Hannah Tibbles, her maiden name was Winters. He was the father of eleven children eight of whom survive him.
(submitter’s note - actually 14 children were noted as fathered by Alexander Johnson with two wives.)

In 1869 he moved to Calliope where he has since resided. He was founder of the town and sill retained large property interests at the time of his death.

He was ever ready to assist those in need, and in this particular was rather eccentric in his ways. A poor man, who could not get a dollar from anyone else, seldom left his door empty handed, while those who could have furnished him ample security, were refused.

The funeral services took place Tuesday and were conducted by Rev. J. C. Gilkerson. A large concourse of relatives, friends and old neighbors assembled to pay a deep tribute of respect and followed the remains to their last resting place.

Leander Storts obituary.
Born: April 21, 1833
Died: October 21, 1886
Mr. Leander Storts was born in 1883, in Washington County, Ohio, where he always resided until he moved to Calliope --16 years ago. He remained here a short time when he took a homestead two miles northwest of here in Dakota. He remained on his farm for several years, but the continued raids of the grasshoppers and other bad luck compelled him to dispose of it and he returned to Calliope.
He was a man of good disposition and had a warm heart for any one in trouble. These traits made him many friends everywhere.
The funeral services were conducted by Reverend Gilkerson, and it was one of the largest funeral processions ever had in Calliope followed the remains to the cemetery.
Mr. Storts left a loving wife, Sarah (Johnson) Storts and a large family of children to mourn his death. A large circle of friends truly sympathize with the bereaved ones in their hour of trial and sorrow.
