HULSTEIN, CORNELIUS AND RIJKE (VAN ROEKEL)
AND GERRIT AND CORNELIA (VER PLOEGH)

Cornelius Hulstein was the first of his family to settle in Sioux County. He purchased a farm 3 miles north and 1 mile west of Sioux Center, and this farm continues today with Hulsteins residing there and working the land.

Cornelius was born in Bennekom, the Netherlands on March 30, 1830. He married Rijke Van Roekel on Oct. 11, 1856. Rijke had been born Jan. 4,1833 also in Bennekom, the Netherlands.

They managed a farm for 15 years in the Netherlands. During this time they had 4 children: William Cornelius born Oct. 10, 1858; Gerrit born Jan. 3, 1862; Steven born Oct. 3, 1864; and Johanna born Dec. 23, 1866. In April of 1871 the family left for America and settled in the Pella area. While living in Pella a 5th child Cornelia was born, Nov. 12, 1878. In May, 1878 Cornelius and a friend Jan Thamases ventured to Sioux County to rent farm land, because they had heard of the rich, fertile soil. The oldest son William traveled by covered wagon to Sioux County to join his father. In Feb. of 1879 the whole family permanently settled in Sioux County in Sioux Center. The first place they lived was the region which was called the "Old Town" area of Sioux Center, which was located a little bit west of the 1st Reformed Church. During this time an epidemic illness broke out, and at the age of 13, Johanna passed away. The family lived on various farms north of Sioux Center. Cornelius had purchased the farm land located 3 miles north and 1 mile west of Sioux Center yet he had never lived there. In June of 1889 his son Gerrit purchased the land from his father. Gerrit had married Cornelia Ver Ploegh on Oct. 28, 1886 in Sioux Center. She was born March 9, 1869 in Pella, Ia. Gerrit and Cornelia had 9 children. Hattie born May 7, 1887, she married Ralph Kastein on Feb. 21, 1905. She died in Nov. of 1964. Pearl born Sept. 16, 1889, she married Peter Bosch Mar. 3, 1909. She died Aug. 13, 1958. Cornelius (Neal) born Nov. 26, 1891, he married Clara Vermeer Dec. 23, 1914. He died Sept. 8, 1955. Conrad born April 26, 1893, he married Grace Van Mannen on April 10, 1914. He died April 1, 1972. William was born on Oct. 5, 1897, he married Anna Schuiteman on Feb. 27, 1921. He died May 30, 1973. Henry was born Sept. 12, 1900, he married Alice Juffer Feb. 9, 1922. He died Feb. 19,1959. Steven was born Aug. 5, 1903, he married Pauline Van De Hoef on Oct. 7, 1930. He died in Aug. of 1987. Johanna Margaret was born Nov. 11, 1905, she married George Lihudis in July of 1922. She resides in Sioux Center. Edward Raymond was born Nov. 3, 1908, he married Della Gritters on July 20, 1927. They reside in Edgerton, Minn.

Gerrit died on Jan. 26, 1934. Cornelia died on Nov. 14, 1940.
