SSTILES, H. L.From the Hawarden Independent, Thursday, May 21, 1914 DEATH OF H. L. STILES Pioneer Calliope Business Man Passes Away at Jamison, Neb. H.L. Stiles, for nearly thirty years a resident of Calliope, died Monday morning at his home near Jamison, Neb., after an illness of short duration. He was about 70 years of age. Mr. Stiles will be remembered by all the old timers in this section and had many friends who will learn with sincere regret of his demise. For many years he managed the north side lumber yard, first for Wooster & Milne and later for Schoeneman Bros. Co., until the yard was discontinued about seven years ago, when with his wife he moved to Jamison, Neb., where they have since made their home on a claim. Always straightforward and honest, he made many lasting friendships during his long business career here. On August 17th of last year Mr. and Mrs. Stiles celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the home of their daughter at Hazel, S.D., and later visited in Hawarden for several weeks when they greatly enjoyed the renewal of those friendships of so many years standing. Besides his bereaved wife he leaves to mourn eight grown daughters as follows: Mrs. E. M. Sayles of Faith, S.D., Mrs. S. Scheie of Jamison, Neb., Mrs. G. Z. Satterlee of Medicine Hat, Can., Mrs. John Brunskill of Hawarden, Mrs. S. S. Easthouse of Hazel, S.D., Mrs. J. C. Keating of Humboldt, S.D., Mrs. G. Vosburg of Bottineau, N.D., and Mrs. I. E. McCumber of Burke, S. D. The remains were brought here for burial today and funeral services were held in the Methodist church this afternoon, conducted by Ref. C. H. Young. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. This obituary was obtained by me with thanks to Wilma Van de Berg of the Genealogical Society. Nancy Richings STILES, Sarah E. (ROYCE)From the Hawarden Independent, Thrusday, June 12, 1924 BROUGHT HERE FOR BURIAL Funeral of Mrs. H. L. Stiles Held Here Saturday Afternoon The funeral of Mrs. H. L. Stiles, whose death occurred on June 3rd at Sturgis, S.D., was held at the Methodist church in this city Saturday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Warner M. Hubbard, pastor of the Rustin Avenue Methodist church of Sioux City, assisted by the local Methodist pastor, Rev. W. A. Winterstein. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery where the husband of Mrs. Stiles was buried ten years ago. Sarah E. Royce was born in McDonough county, Ill., on Oct. 26, 1844, so at the time of her death had attained the age of 79 years, 7 months and 7 days. On Aug. 17, 1863, she was united in marriage with H. L. Stiles at Carthage, Ill. From Illinois they came to Hawarden in 1883 and lived here until 1901 when they moved to Jamison, Neb. To Mr. and Mrs. Stiles were born ten children, two sons and eight daughters. The two sons preceded her in death but the eight daughters are all living and six of them were present at the funeral. One of them, Mrs. Rose Brunskill, lives in Hawarden; Mrs. E.M. Sayles lives at Sturgis, S.D.; Mrs. Simon Scheie at Jamison, Neb., Mrs. Severt Easthouse at Hazel, S.D.; Mrs. Geo. Satterlee at Salem, Ore; Mrs. J.C.Keating at Humboldt, S.D.; Mrs. Geo. Vosburg at Palms, Calif.; and Mrs. I. E. McCumber at Burke, S.D. Mr. Stiles passed away at Jamison, Neb., in 1914. Since that time Mrs. Stiles has made her home for the most part with her daughter, Mrs. Scheie, at Jamison, visiting at times with her other children. She passed away at Sturgis, S.D., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sayles. Mrs. Stiles belonged to the sturdy pioneer stock which has made this country what it is today. Coming here in a very early day when there were few physical comforts and almost no luxuries, when doctors were not many and trained nurses unknown, she took her place in the life of the community, doing her share of its work in addition to caring for here own large family. Often she heard the call to come to the bedside of some sick neighbor or to render assistance when a new life came into the world and she was found where she was needed. She very early united with the Methodist church and remained a faithful member until her death. It is of such as she that a great country is made. Strong,
cheerful, faithful, tender hearted, with a firm faith in a God of love and
goodness she continued until her death a blessing to those who knew her. With thanks to Wilma Van de Berg for finding the
