Western Academy 1919 (This story and photo taken from 1989 Doon Press.)
Pictured is the old First Reformed Church parsonage in Hull which later became the first building to house the Western Academy, later named Western Christian high school. The "mansion" was purchased in 1919 and moved to a site on Hull's mainstreet. It was purchased for $3000 and an additional $1000 was spent to revamp it for school purposes. The basement contained a lounging area and rest rooms; the first floor, the class rooms; the second, the laboratories and library; the third floor was used as a dormitory for the boys. Grades 9 and 10 were the start of the academy. John W. Postma of Battle Creek, MI was a 10th grader that first year and submitted this photo to the Doon Press. Henry Roelofs, Martin Bolt and Jake Ledeboer also attended 10th grade that first year. Soon the board saw that the big house could not accommodate a four year secondary school and so plans were made to purchase land and in March of 1924 the present Western building was completed at the cost of $64,936.00. In 1924, a total of 100 students were enrolled. The 1989 enrollment was 374.
