These two are very sharp in detail because I have the actual negatives and had them printed 5 by 7 format about 10 years ago.

Two of the boys were not students in that school. They were Gary and Jerry Fahl, the sons of B. Elwood and Alice Fahl. Elwood taught at Northwestern Academy for several year and also had a small photofinishing business in his home. He later taught at junior colleges in Arkansas and on Maryland’s Eastern Shore where their church organist was Annie Glenn, wife of astronaut and later Ohio Senator. Mrs Glenn was painfully shy and had a pronounced stammer but she was a skilled organist.

I believe that my Mom (Teacher, Anna Rylaarsdam Lotterman) roomed with the Fahls as a student after Miss Blackburn’s death and would go back there on weekends instead of staying at Smits. [See the Holland No. 4 Memories page to read Ed's recollections of his Mother's teaching career.]

Holland No. 4 school building - 1957

The photo above is Ed Lotterman and his sister, posing on the steps of the school during a family visit in 1957. The picture was taken about twenty years after Ed's mother taught there and likely ten years before the school was officially closed.
