SAMUEL B. LINN FAMILY

Samuel B. Linn, Shelby County, Iowa

Above, Samuel Briley Linn.

Samuel was the brother of Jacob Booher Linn, who came from Pennsylvania by covered wagon and settled in Shelby Twp. in 1874.

Samuel Brierly Linn and family acquired the acreage directly west and south of the Jacob Linn Farm on June 8, 1874. They likely started with a log cabin but built a timber frame house in 1880 which still stands on the property. 40 acres of his land was acquired by Franklin Linn, son of Jacob, and incorporated into the original Jacob Linn farm to make it a full quarter section.

Samuel, like his brother, originated from Maddensville, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania and came to Iowa by prairie schooner with his wife - Jane Glasgow Keagy - and their children. He was widowed in 1913 and retired to Ames to live with his daughter Lulu and her family. He died there on 12 March 1920. He is buried in the Shelby Cemetery. He served with Company A, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War and was - like his brother Jacob - a member of the Dick Yates GAR Post in Shelby.

Samuel's farm passed to Orrin Best and wife Anna Laura (Linn) Best, Laura being the daughter of Jacob Linn. It eventually became the farm of Jacob and Helen (Young) Linn, Jake being the grandson of Jacob Linn. Jake was long the caretaker of the Shelby Cemetery as his father Franklin Linn had been. So, as you can surmise, these two farms have been, since 1874 (off and on) Linn farms and the center of quite a bit of our family history.
