Opal Therkildsen Peavler - Age 99
Opal Lucinda Peavler, daughter of George and Mary (Carlson) Adams, was born
January 5, 1911 in Kirkman, Iowa. She attended school in Kirkman and graduated
from Kirkman High School. Opal knitted a sweater for a grateful World War I
soldier as pictured on the cover when she was in second grade at age 7. Opal’s
family later made their home in Harlan.
On February 18, 1931, Opal was united in marriage to Glen A. Therkildsen in
Harlan, Iowa. They were the parents of one ornery son, Charles George
Therkildsen in 1937. In 1950, Glen died after an accidental fall from a ladder.
Opal continued to make her home in Harlan while working as a retail clerk. Opal
then moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa where she entered nurses training at Jennie
Edmundson Hospital where she completed her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
On August 19, 1954, Opal was united in marriage to Ernie Peavler in Council
Bluffs, Iowa while both were employed at Jennie Edmundson Hospital. Opal and
Ernie later retired to Ernie’s hometown of Triplett, Missouri. Not long after
Ernie’s death, Opal yearned to return to live in her hometown of Harlan.
Opal was very active all her life. In addition to being a nurse, she was a
member of the United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist
Builders Class. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than
fifty years where she served as a Worthy Matron. She was still active in many
clubs: Knitters, CC Club, Tuesday Morning Coffee Klutch at Mickels and just
loved to be out and about with Rosie when weather permitted.
She died on April 2, 2010, at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan having
attained the age of ninety-nine years, two months and twenty-eight days. In
addition to her parents and husbands, Opal was preceded in death by her sister
June and brothers Lloyd and Roy Adams.
Opal is survived by her son, C. G. "Turk" Therkildsen and his wife Joyce of
Inverness, Illinois; her granddaughters: DeAnne and her husband Tom Prochnow of
Bloomington, Illinois and Debbi and her husband Rich Peterson of Elburn,
Illinois; her great grandchildren: Chelsie, Charlie and Curtis Prochnow and
Austin and Alyssa Peterson; four generations of nieces and nephews and special
friends Rosie and her husband Don Thraen of Harlan. She is also survived by her
constant and beloved Snowshoe Siamese kitten companion, Samantha. Opal always
believed an angel sent Samantha to her via the Forever Homes Animal Shelter.
Funeral services were held 10:00 A.M. on Monday, April 5, 2010 at the Pauley
Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa and officiated by Dr. Rev. David Swinton.
Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan with Charlie Prochnow,
Curtis Prochnow, Tom Prochnow, Austin Peterson, Rich Peterson and Don Thraen
serving as casket bearers.

Donald Dean Stolz, age 78, died peacefully after a courageous battle with
cancer, Friday, April 9, 2010, in Johnston Mercy Hospice.
Don was born to Henry and Ruth Stolz and spent his early years in Harlan, IA.
Following his graduation from Harlan High School, Don worked at the Harlan
Tribune as a typesetter and apprentice printer. His career took him to Ida
Grove, IA, then to Hannibal, MO, where he served the Hannibal Courier Post for
more than ten years. Don and his wife, Carole, raised three children; Douglas,
Susanne, and Craig. They were active in the Hannibal Lutheran Church and the
school system. Don served as a church deacon for several years while there. Don
moved his family to Des Moines in 1967 accepting a position as printer and
layout composer with the Des Moines Register and Tribune, serving the newspaper
until his retirement in 1997.
Those who knew Don, knew his love and devotion to racing, NASCAR, and his
loyalty to #3 - the "Intimidator". NASCAR memorabilia fills his home. His love
for racing began in his youth when he would sneak away to the Harlan Racetrack,
peeking through the fence to watch Tiny Lund race. Travels took Don to the
opening NASCAR Daytona 500, 27 consecutive years; plus also attending races in
TN, AL, GA, TX, KS, and Newton, IA.
World War II history, airplanes, fighter planes, battles, skirmishes - all could
keep Don talking for hours. He loved talking with the men from WWII who made the
trip to the Washington DC Memorial. His collection of caps, buttons, books,
tapes, and movies justified his interest. One of his favorite trips was visiting
the USS Arizona Memorial and the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor.
Sketching, photography, bird watching, travel, and being with friends were Don's
joy and showed his love for life.
Don is predeceased by his wife, Carole J. (Rabe) Stolz; his parents, Hank and
Ruth (Smith) Stolz; and a brother, Richard. Surviving are his long-time
companion and friend, Blanche Riordan of West Des Moines; sister, Mary Ann
(Bernard) Stein of Prairie City, IA; brothers, Ralph Stolz of Eau Clair, WI, and
Roger Stolz of Colorado Springs, CO; sons, Douglas (Shellie) Stolz of Tulsa, OK,
and Craig (Terri) Stolz of Aurora, CO; and daughter, Susanne (Dave) Lunders of
Parkville, MO. "Adopted" families include Jeannine (Larry) Laughlin of Waukee,
Tony (Amy) Riordan of Urbandale, and Beth Thede of Lakeville, MN; six
grandchildren, eight "adopted" grandchildren, one great-grandson; and many, many
loving friends and relatives. We loved him and he will always share a place in
our hearts. He is at peace!

Denison Bulletin/Review
4/16/2010
Phyllis Elaine, daughter of Earl and Lela (Blair) Mueller, was born November 5,
1928 on a farm north of Walnut in Shelby County, Iowa. She attended Monroe #8
and Layton #4 schools and graduated from Walnut High School in 1946. Phyllis
earned her Limited Elementary Teacher's Certificate on November 5, 1946 and
taught country school for two years, the first at a school near Marne and the
second at Monroe #8 near Walnut. As a young girl, Phyllis was active in the
Layton Willing Workers 4-H club. In 1948 she was awarded the Ak-Sar-Ben gold
medal and was recognized as the member who had rendered the greatest service to
the county 4-H effort during the past year.
On December 30, 1948, Phyllis was united in marriage with Harold Voege at Peace
Evangelical & Reformed Church in Walnut (where she had been confirmed on March
29, 1942). They made their first home on a farm four miles northwest of Manning
for two years before building their home on the farm owned by Harold's parents.
One daughter, Jean, was born to this union.
Phyllis was a farm wife and helped with all aspects of the family farm
operation. In addition, she raised ducks, geese, chickens, sold eggs and had a
large vegetable garden. Phyllis noted "I like the outdoor life and the simple
way of doing things." She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in
Westside where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She became a
member of the United Church in Westside and was elected to serve on the first
parish council created by the joining of St. John's and Westside Presbyterian
Church. She was also a member of the Westside Cemetery Auxiliary.
Harold passed away September 14, 1995 and Phyllis moved into an apartment in
Manning in November 1996. She became active in a number of community
organizations serving as the Chaplain for the American Legion Auxiliary and the
Guard for the VFW Auxiliary for a number of years. She was also a member of the
Aspinwall Community Club Auxiliary. She enjoyed volunteering for bingo at the
Manning Plaza.
She enjoyed having a cup of coffee and piece of pie at Deb's Corner Cafe in
Manning visiting with her friends and family. She often commented "I have a
dozen cousins and Harold has dozens of cousins." After retirement, Phyllis
enjoyed many trips with Jean. Their travels included Cape Cod, the California
Redwoods, the Oregon coast, Mt. St. Helen's, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone
National Park and Disneyland. Her last trip in January 2007 fulfilled her dream
to attend the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, California.
Phyllis became a resident of the Manning Plaza in November 2009 where she died
on Saturday, April 10, 2010. She was 81 years, 5 months and 5 days of age. When
asked how she would like to be remembered, Phyllis responded "Just think of me
as a person who was willing to work and help other people."
