Blanche Anna (Peterson) Burmeister
February 25, 1921 - April 20, 2009
Blanche Anna Burmeister, daughter of Harry L. and Mildred (Findlay) Peterson,
was born on February 25, 1921, on a farm near Cuppy’s Grove in the Monroe
Township of Shelby County, Iowa. She attended school in Cuppy’s Grove for eight
years, followed by Harlan (Iowa) High School for three years. A family move took
her to Oakland, California, where she graduated in 1938. She worked for Dr.
Maassen five years following graduation. On December 28, 1943, Blanche married
Alvin H. Burmeister, a farmer living near Corley, Iowa, in the Fairview
Township. They lived and worked on the family farm where Alvin lived all of his
life. Blanche was a dedicated farm wife and homemaker. After Alvin retired from
farming, Blanche and Alvin enjoyed many winters in Kissimmee, Florida, with many
of their friends.
Blanche and Alvin were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan from the
time of their marriage until 1960, when they transferred to United Lutheran
Church in Shelby, Iowa. They returned to Immanuel in 1998. Blanche and Alvin
were married for 55 years.
Blanche’s life was blessed with smiles and happiness brought by her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to play cards, Po-Ke-No and
teach her grandkids how to play 21 with pennies! She always had candy (usually
Brach’s, definitely Butterscotch and Cinnamon) ready for the taking and
geraniums and snapdragons in her garden. She loved mowing the lawn on her lawn
tractor, baking wonderful rolls and many other things, and doing search-a-word
puzzles. Blanche had a small organ in their home where she might be found
playing a hymn or two - “How Great Thou Art” was her favorite. She loved lilacs
and lily of the valley, always dreamed of having a Lincoln Town Car, and always
had to sneeze three times if she was going to sneeze at all. She used to wear
dresses all the time, but eventually, that gave way to slacks, which she
actually enjoyed wearing more. In the summer, she might be found riding her
trike to the mailbox, canning, or making fresh cucumber and onion salad. She
hosted “Club” for the ladies and that was the only time the grandchildren
weren’t welcome to walk right in her door. She often hosted sleepovers for the
grandkids as well, sure to bring late-night TV watching, fun snacks and lots of
card playing. She also enjoyed crocheting and cross stitching. Blanche had quite
a sense of humor, too - quick to the end with teasing comments, a wink and a
grin.
Blanche Anna Burmeister died peacefully on Monday, April 20, 2009, at her
daughter Diane’s home in Urbandale, Iowa, at the age of 88 years, 1 month and 26
days.
Blanche was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; her brother, Harry
Peterson, Jr.; her sister, Darlene Reed; two brothers-in-law, Don Reed and
Clancy Holdren; and one grandson, Matthew Burmeister. She is survived by her
sister, Marilyn Holdren of Harlan; her children and their spouses, Connie and
Jerry Paul of Woodland Park, Colorado, Diane and Jim Friend of Urbandale, Iowa,
Roger and Mary Burmeister of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and David and Kim Burmeister
of Harlan; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren; along with many other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 24, 2009 at Immanuel Lutheran Church
in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Jon Benson of Saint John Lutheran Church, Council
Bluffs, Iowa, officiating. Marge Ahrenholtz served as organist and Bonnie Peters
was the soloist. Casket bearers were Eric Burmeister, Kris Bro, Michael Paul,
Rachel Lindstrom, Jeremy Bro, Jay Burmeister, Angie Sindergard, Andrew Bro,
Caroline Gallup, Missy Friend, Billy Friend, Kelly Marvin, Marcus Burmeister,

Ruby I. Tuel, 89, longtime resident of Atlantic, passed away unexpectedly at
Avoca Nursing & Rehab Center on Saturday, June 27, 2009.
Ruby Irene was born the daughter of George and Anna (Campen) Brawe in Massena,
Iowa on November 5, 1919. She grew up in Massena, attending school and
graduating where she would become a country school teacher. She lived with her
parents in their home while she taught for over six years.
As a teacher, she had to build the fire when it was cold, scoop the snow, sweep
floors and carry water. She also told the story about cleaning the outdoor
toilets, noting it was a job she would rather forget.
Her contract stated that she had to be 18 years old, and if she got married, the
contract became null and void. After she had taught at Massena No. 5 for six
years, she thought maybe the school needed a change of teacher so she moved
along, only to return to the school she had missed so much. That lasted only
three months, as "Penny Tuel," the man of her dreams, moved into her picture.
As surprising turns of events took place in both Ruby's and Penny's lives, they
became acquainted through her house keeping and cooking job and Penny's farming
employment for the famed Roswell Garst family - hosts of Nikita Khrushchev, in
Coon Rapids, Iowa. Ruby was paid a dollar a day while she worked for Mrs. Garst.
Penny went to the service on October 17, 1941, and wasn't allowed to return or
come home at all until he was discharged on October 17, 1945. He was not allowed
to visit home during those years, even when his parents passed away. When he was
finally discharged from Okinanwa, Ruby had the high light of her life when her
brother took her to met Penny at the train station in Atlantic. Ruby was married
to Leonard H. "Penny" Tuel in Atlantic on November 10, 1945 in Malvern, Iowa.
The couple was blessed with a family of three children.
As the children grew, she became a Penney's Department Store employee where she
worked until retirement in 1983. She was a member of the First United Methodist
Church. Her endeared hobbies and interests included gardening (she especially
enjoyed geraniums and petunias), cooking and watching her children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up. Her family will fondly remember
her wonderful sense of humor.
Ruby's survivors include her husband Penny of Atlantic; daughter Vicki Vollmuth
of Omaha, NE; sons, Rodger Tuel and his wife Nancy of Berthoud, CO and Tim Tuel
and his wife Denise of Shelby, IA; a sister Elsie Purvis of Grand Island, NE; a
