Matriarch Wilke's love of life held family together
BY CAROL BICAK
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER
Mary "Murph" Wilke loved people, and people loved her back.
That's what Jim Wilke said about his mom, who died Thursday of brain cancer,
only a few weeks after being diagnosed.
Jim Wilke, one of six surviving children, said when his mother heard the
diagnosis, she said: "Boys, I don't want to pass away in a hospital room or a
care center."
"So we brought her home," he said.
Home for Mary Wilke was in the middle of the Miracle Hills Golf Course. Her
husband, Joe, who died in 1993, was head greenskeeper at the course for 34
years. She never moved.
Born and raised in Dunlap, Iowa, she "loved her family, loved her faith and
loved her friends," Jim Wilke said. "We called her matriarch, the glue that held
the family all together."
She also was proud of her Irish heritage, he said, and St. Patrick's Day was
second only to Christmas as a favorite holiday.
In addition to Jim Wilke, survivors include sons John, Jerry, Jeff and Jay;
daughter Janie; and six grandchildren, all of Omaha.
Visitation at the Heafey-Heafey-Hoffmann-Dworak-Cutler West Center Chapel will
begin at 2 p.m. Monday. The family will greet visitors from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and
a rosary will be at 7 p.m.
A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Robert Bellarmine
Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
