Doris Elizabeth, daughter of Charles H. and Elizabeth (Campbell) Ramsey, was born November 20, 1920, at Botna, Iowa. She attended rural school near Botna. When Doris was seven years old, her mother died, and she continued to live at home with her dad and four brothers and one sister. She attended one year of high school at Abraham Lincoln in Council Bluffs where she lived with an aunt and uncle. She then returned home and attended Manilla High School for two more years. Her father then decided they should spend more time in Manning and she completed school there, graduating with the Class of 1939. After completing her Normal Training courses, Doris taught rural school for four years.

On April 14, 1946, Doris was united in marriage with Amos Rutz at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. During the war years while Amos was serving in the military overseas, Doris lived in California with her brother Howard. She worked at Lockheed Aircraft and See&s Candies. They returned to Manning where they raised their five children. Doris worked at Nelson Manufacturing for 17 years and did a lot of babysitting, however, she primarily considered herself a homemaker.

Doris was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliaries. In her spare time she enjoyed playing the piano, walking, taking care of her home and, above all, visiting her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed her volunteer work at church and at the American Legion and VFW.

In 2001, Doris became a resident of the Manning Plaza. Her health began to deteriorate in 2007 and she died there early Friday, August 3, 2007 at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 14 days.
