Deloris Denton founded Bluffs' D's Beauty Den

Deloris Denton, who founded a Council Bluffs salon and did hair for four decades, is being remembered as a people person who loved her work.

Denton, the former owner of D's Beauty Den, died Tuesday from complications of a chronic lung disease, according to Pam Minor, a former co-worker.

Minor bought the shop from Denton six years ago and hosted a May 19 retirement party for the woman she refers to as her mentor after Denton's April retirement.

"She always said she was 29," Minor said. More likely, Denton was in her 70s.

Denton worked as a hairdresser for more than 40 years, including nearly 29 years at D's Beauty Den, the first 23 years as the shop's owner before selling to Minor.

"I kept the name," Minor said. "This beauty shop was her life."

The shop will be closed Monday in her memory.

Minor said Denton graduated from the old Barnes Beauty School in 1959, where the two met, and worked in the Barnes beauty shop until opening her salon at 134 W. Broadway in 1978.

Minor remembers Denton as someone who liked to dance and go boating with her husband, Lynn.

"She just was a people person," Minor said. "She came to work with her oxygen on, put her hand on the chair and comb hair with one hand."

Denton loved cartoon characters from the newspaper, especially Maxine, and often brought jokes to work. She joined her brothers and sisters for family reunions every two years, Minor said, and one had been scheduled for next month.

"We always called her Dr. Denton. She liked to give people medical advice," she said. "She was a neat lady. A very hard-working person. She was a mentor to us girls."

Denton was born in Portsmouth to Tom and Louise Powers. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Lynn Denton; daughters Pam Pope and husband Mark; Lori Swisher and husband Steve; stepchildren Rick Denton and wife Jane; Randy Denton and wife Beth; Rhonda Bockenstedt; 13 children and four great-grandchildren; brothers Harold Powers and wife Colleen; Dean Powers and wife Eileen; sister Linda Price; plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation is planned for tonight at Henry-Livingston Funeral Home with services Monday at First Christian Church and interment at Garner Township Cemetery.

"She just was a fun, fun person. She loved life," Minor said. "She absolutely loved doing hair."

God saw she was getting tired,
And a cure was not to be.

So He put His arms around her
And whispered “Come with me.”

With tearful eyes we watched her
Suffer, and saw her fade away.

And tho’ we loved her dearly,
We could not make her stay.

A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands to rest;

God broke our hearts to show us,
He only takes the best.

Sister Clarita, 108, lived life to the fullest
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

If there are such questions in heaven, Sister Clarita Langenfeld's brothers and sisters don't have to worry about her any more.

"They might be wondering where I am," she said when she was only 106. "I bet they think I didn't make it."

Langenfeld died two years after that quip, on July 15, of natural causes. She was 108, the oldest member of the School Sisters of St. Francis, her community for 83 years.

She was born Frances Langenfeld [May 19, 1898, dau. of Nicholas & Katherine (Krupp) Langenfeld], growing up on a 360-acre farm near Earling, Iowa.

In an interview at 106, she no longer remembered - or cared about - what she had majored in at college or the subject of her master's thesis.

She did remember her eight brothers and sisters all now dead. She was the aunt to their children and generations of their children. She did not know another sister, Clara, who died as a young girl.

Langenfeld said she prayed for her brothers and sisters and for peace.

"World peace," she told Journal Sentinel reporter Crocker Stephenson. "Peace throughout the world."

When Stephenson tried to ask her philosophic questions about long life and death and suffering in the world, she dismissed all of that as the concerns of the young.

"You," Langenfeld told him, "are a spring chicken."

She cherished the memories from her childhood on the Iowa farm, simple things like the cows and the corn. She loved water fights on hot days. She was proud of the fact that her father bought one of the first cars seen in Earling, Iowa.

She remembered the one-room schoolhouse where she first taught, though she did not especially enjoy all her duties there. The list included shoveling snow, carrying out ashes, hauling in water and lighting the pot-bellied stove.

Already a teaching graduate with experience, she was a natural to begin teaching when she joined the order in 1922. Her first assignment was in Theresa, Wis., followed by longer stints as teacher and principal with Our Lady of Victory in Chicago.

In Wisconsin, she also served at St. Mary's in Fennimore; St. Mary's in Menomonee Falls; St. Catherine's in Milwaukee and St. Patrick's in Beaver Dam. At the age of 82, she retired as principal at Our Lady of Victory in Chicago, next serving there as sacristan where she routinely climbed 27 flights of stairs until age 102. In 2000, she moved to a retirement home in Milwaukee.

In her working days, she was something of a quiet and strict disciplinarian, said Colleen Musker, who began producing a documentary about Langenfeld as she turned 100.

"After she retired, she let more people see her sense of humor," said Musker, who became a good friend. "She could be very sarcastic and she had a way with words."

She especially loved the chance to make a public pitch for the sisters' retirement fund.

"Please donate so I can retire," she would say, with a twinkle in her eye.. "I'm 102 years old."

"She would play it to the hilt," Musker said.

Langenfeld also kept riding an exercise bike every morning until age 102.

"She was fancy, proper, gracious and always grateful," said Sister Therese Thoenen, coordinator of the Sacred Heart convent here. "She liked to wear her heels as long as she could, until the last few years. She always said, 'I'm on the go. I have two good legs and two good feet. I'm a tough guy.' "

"I have been blessed in many ways," she told her fellow sisters."I'm not worked to death and I'm not bored to death."

Langenfeld believed that she kept living because it was the will of God.

"I feel ready to die when God wants me to die," she said.

No, she didn't think that she would miss what was called life. Neither did she fear death.

"All is good," she said.

Burial was Monday, following earlier services. Memorials are suggested to the School Sisters of St. Francis.

Teen drowns in area lake

Rescue workers remove the body of a Minnesota teen from Prairie Rose State Park Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 15.

HARLAN - A 17-year-old Minnesota boy drowned Tuesday while swimming with family members at Prairie Rose State Park southwest of Harlan.

Shelby County Sheriff Gene Cavenaugh said the teen, whose name has not been released pending notification of family, was swimming with two younger cousins when he went under the water about 1:15 p.m.

Park Manager Michelle Reinig said she arrived at the scene after a beach visitor notified her someone had gone under.

"When I got there, a woman was pulling the two younger kids out of the water and trying to find the other boy," Reinig said.

She and the park ranger attempted to locate the young man without success.

"They were swimming in about 8-feet of water," she said. "The other boys said they were getting tired. We are not sure what happened."

Rescue workers from Harlan and Anita and dive teams from Lewis Township, Cass and Crawford counties arrived shortly thereafter, Reinig said.

Cavenaugh said the teen's body was recovered about an hour and a half after the search began. The Shelby County Medical Examiner pronounced him dead at the scene.

The State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny is conducting an autopsy today. The office's Director of Forensic Operations, John Kraemer said preliminary results would not be available until later today or early tomorrow.

Cavenaugh said the family, from Kasson, Minn., was visiting relatives in Manilla and camping at the park. He said the teen's mother arrived at the beach as the two younger boys were yelling for help. The father arrived shortly thereafter.

"It is terrible thing," he said. "It is just one of those things that happen."

Tuesday's drowning was the park's second drowning this year. William Thomas of Council Bluffs drowned in February while ice fishing.

"We haven't had a drowning in 25 years, and now we have two in less than six months," Reining said. "It is terrible when a family vacation turns to horror."

Teen Drowned In Shallow Water
Minnesota Teenager Drowns In Iowa Lake

POSTED: 5:27 pm CDT August 15, 2006
UPDATED: 8:57 am CDT August 16, 2006

HARLAN, Iowa -- A teenage boy from Minnesota drowned Tuesday afternoon in an Iowa lake in about 8 feet of water.

The boy's mother said he was swimming with his brothers at Prairie Rose State Park near Harlan. She said he never came back to the surface.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, a 17-year-old male died while attempting to swim to a marker buoy at the park beach. The teenager was reported missing around 1:15 p.m. and his body was recovered by local dive teams later in the afternoon, about 10 feet from where he was last seen, according to Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen.

The 204-acre lake is southeast of Harlan.

Eleven volunteer firefighters, several dive teams, six law enforcement officers and five paramedics rushed to the lake to save the boy.

"After we were on scene for a while, we knew chances were getting slimmer and slimmer; it ended up being a recovery," Bissen said.

Bissen said the boy drowned in 8 feet of water. He said the lake quickly drops off to 16-foot depths. There are signs all around the area marking the drop. Bissen said the teenager was swimming out of the designated area.

Rescuers don't know why the teenager never came back up after he went down. The chief said he was in good health and he was an average swimmer.

The medical examiner in Des Moines is doing the autopsy. Investigators aren't releasing the name of the boy yet.

The death was the second tragedy at Prairie Rose Park in the last six months.

"Late winter, when the lakes were thawing, we had an ice break through and some fishermen went down," Bissen said.

Bissen said it's hard when a rescue turns into a recovery.

Tragic drowning at Prairie Rose Lake

Members of area dive teams helped in the search for a 17-year-old Minnesota boy who drowned at Prairie Rose Lake Tuesday, Aug. 15.

HARLAN -- A 17-year-old Minnesota boy drowned at Prairie Rose Lake near Harlan Tuesday afternoon, August 15.

Gavin A. Stone was swimming with two others, one identified as his cousin, at the beach area on the north side of the lake about 1:15 p.m. when he went under water, officials said. His body was pulled from the lake by members of special dive units called in for the rescue and recovery operation, approximately two hours after witnesses contacted authorities.

It's the second such accident at Prairie Rose State Park in the last six months. A Council Bluffs man died in an ice fishing accident on the lake last February when he and two others fell through the thin ice, not far from the location of Tuesday's drowning.

"It's just tragic," said Jan Curtis, Prairie Rose State Park Ranger, who was the first on the scene at both drownings this year along with Michelle Reinig, park manager. "This is two within a year," and that's two too many, she said.

Curtis and Reinig were alerted to Tuesday's accident by a witness who was at the beach Tuesday afternoon, and had driven around the lake to the Park Ranger station to seek help. Curtis immediately jumped in a flat-bottom boat and raced to the beach area while Reinig took a truck around the lake to search from shore.
Within minutes additional authorities arrived to help in the rescue.

"It wasn't long before (Shelby County Chief Deputy) Mark (Hervey) arrived and he helped us with the search," said Curtis.

Family members had decided they wanted a few minutes with their son before he was taken away.

Gavin's mother and father, Scott and Theresa Stone, walked down the slope from the parking lot at the beach where they'd waited for two hours as authorities searched for their son, and stood next to the ambulance. Only minutes before, a search and rescue dive team had pulled their son from the lake.

The area that had bustled with nervous activity only a few moments earlier in the search for the 17-year-old grew quiet as the family clasped hands with rescue personnel and local pastor Greg White, Grace Baptist Church. They formed a circle, bowed their heads and said a prayer.

They hugged and then climbed into the back of Medivac Ambulance/Rescue for some time with the teen before his body was taken away.

Officials called it a tragic accident. The Minnesota family was camping at the state park. They have relatives in the Manilla area and were visiting.

Shelby County Sheriff Gene Cavenaugh said Gavin was swimming with the two youngsters when he just went under. The youths were just beyond the roped-off area of the beach, but inside the two buoys which signify the swim area at the lake. Much of the swimming area is 3-5 feet in depth, but near the buoys it is 8-10 feet and drops off to 16 feet or more, officials said.

"Whether or not he got cramps or what happened, we're just not sure, but he went down," said Cavenaugh.
As he struggled in the water, he also grabbed his seven-year-old cousin, Cody Chapman, swimming with him at the lake. "He got ahold of the seven-year-old's leg and was pulling him down, too, but then the seven-year-old said he just let go," said Cavenaugh.

The two younger boys then had their own struggle to get to shore. Julie Klein, Harlan, was at the beach swimming with her two children, Nic and Haley. She said she was reading a magazine on the sand when a grandma of another group of kids at the beach mentioned one boy being missing, and then Julie saw the other two struggling boys in the water.

"I ran out there and helped the two (younger) boys in," said Klein. "Then I helped to look for the older one." Nic used Julie's cell phone to call 911.

About that same time Theresa Stone arrived back at the beach after getting some groceries, officials said, and heard the yelling for help that someone had gone under water. Scott Stone was on the other side of the lake and was notified by witnesses of the accident. He called 911 and rushed to the beach, officials said.

The Harlan Fire Department, Shelby County Sheriff's Office and Medivac Ambulance/Rescue arrived shortly thereafter and coordinated the search efforts. The water was murky and it was difficult to see. Aaron Holtz, a member of the Harlan Police Department and Fire Department, was one of many that jumped in the water. Searchers attached ropes to their bodies and used sticks to search the bottom of the lake for the teen.

"It's so dirty my hand disappears as soon as I put it in the water off the top," he told others while in the lake.
They used their hands to search in the shallower areas and the sticks where it was deeper. They started from the last area the teen was seen and worked their way to the northeast, the direction of the current. Rescuers struggled in the deeper water to feel for the teen.

Dive teams from Cass County, Denison and Carroll County arrived and joined in the search, and were able to utilize air tanks so they could breathe while searching the deeper areas.

"After we were on the scene for a while, we knew the chances (of a rescue) were slimmer and slimmer," said Roger Bissen, Harlan Fire Chief. "It became more of a recovery operation."

Following about two hours of searching, a diver yelled to the shoreline that he'd located the boy. It was 3:22 p.m.

"He was found within 10 feet of where he actually went under," said Bissen.

Recovery crews brought the teen's body to shore by boat, and officials set up a perimeter with tarps and sheets for privacy. Shelby County Medical Examiner Scott Markham, D.O., arrived and Gavin was pronounced dead at the scene. Family members were then given their opportunity to see the teen following prayer.

Cavenaugh credited the dozens of individuals who helped in the search and recovery during such a heartbreaking situation. "We had a lot of help and assistance out there," he said.

In addition to rescue personnel, fire departments, dive teams and law enforcement, the Shelby County Chapter of the American Red Cross brought water, gatorade and sandwiches to the scene for exhausted rescuers.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office.

Funeral services are being coordinated by Ohde Funeral Home, Manilla (see death notice).

Woman battled to save teen

HARLAN - An older woman approached Julie Klein while she was watching her two children swim Tuesday afternoon at Prairie Rose State Park.

"I only see two heads," the woman said.

"I only have two children," Klein responded, puzzled by the woman's comment.

"No, over there in the water," the woman said. "There were three children swimming. Now I only see two."

Klein's eyes followed the woman's pointing finger. She, too, saw two heads. The struggling swimmers looked to be about her own children's ages - 8 and 10.

Earlier Klein had noticed the three boys playing together in the shallow water. The third boy was a teenager who stood about 6-foot one.

"They looked like a nice family playing together," she noted on how well they got along.

Klein knew the lake well. Growing up in nearby Walnut, her family often came to fish and swim there. She and friends would drive their mopeds to its shores for summertime fun. She knew the water was deep where the two youngsters were struggling to get to shore. It was just beyond the buoy, where the level rose to about 8-feet.

Without hesitation Klein threw her sunglasses off and swam to the boys.

"They were more scared than I have ever seen two kids," she remembered.

Klein grabbed the youngsters and pulled them to shallow water.

"Boys, you can stand. Just stand," she told the frightened children.

Klein then told her children to get the life jackets out of the car and call 911. The older woman drove to the park ranger's office to get help. Klein went back into the water and swam past the buoy. She dove into the dark water. And dove again. And again.

"I couldn't see very far in the lake water. I was asking God, 'Please let me feel a hand or kick a body or touch his hair.'"

Klein continued to dive.

"It seemed like a long time," she said. Someone later told her it was 15 to 20 minutes.

"I couldn't stop until someone else arrived," she said. "It was someone's child in there. I would want someone to do the same if it was one of mine."

Prairie Rose Park Manager Michelle Reinig and Park Ranger Jan Curtis soon arrived. Reinig began diving while Curtis circled the area in a boat, hoping to spot some sign of the young man.

The teen's mother drove up to the beach.

"She wanted to get in and look for him. Michelle urged her to stay on shore," Klein said. "It was a good call."

Klein gave the mom a hug.

"We are looking for him," she told her. "It was so hard to watch as a parent myself."

Soon the teen's father arrived. He had been fishing at another part of the lake; periodically peering at the swimmers through binoculars to make sure everything was okay. He apparently only spotted two boys during one of those checks.

Klein left the beach area when rescue workers and dive teams arrived to continue the search.

"I asked if there was anything I could do," she said.

One of the paramedics who knew Klein suggested she take her children and go home. "You don't want them to see them pull out the body."

She left the beach, taking her children back to their camper, but Reinig soon came and told Klein the dive team wanted to talk with her about the teen's possible location. She returned to the shore.

When she arrived at water's edge, Klein saw the body being pulled into a boat.

The teen she had so badly wanted to find was later identified as Gavin Stone, of Kasson, Minn. Like Klein, he had come to the lake to enjoy some summertime fun with his family. Stone's mother was originally from nearby Irwin. His grandparents and some other relatives still live there.

The swimmers Klein rescued were Gavin's cousins.

"I think they were from somewhere in Nebraska," she said.

She tossed and turned that night, wondering what she could have done differently, struggling to understand a young man's death. Her son had trouble sleeping, too.

"He said he couldn't stop thinking about him," she said. "I told him I couldn't either."

Heroes don't usually see themselves that way. Julie Klein is no different.

"Anyone would have done what I did," she said.

She still wishes she could have felt Gavin's arm, kicked his body or touched his hair.

"I believe in God," she said. "If I was meant to save him I guess I would have."

She hopes others will join her in praying for Gavin's family.

"There will be a hole there," she said. "I don't know how you'd go on."
