BRIEN T. BOYCE, Staff Writer

In 49 years of marriage, Sandra Kruse said life with her husband Bud never lacked in excitement.

"In all that time, there was never a dull moment," Sandra said.

A longtime educator in Council Bluffs, Warren B. "Bud" Kruse, 71, died March 7 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital.

Though born in Sioux City on May 29, 1934, Bud spent most of his life in Council Bluffs. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1952. He later attended Dana College in Blair, Neb., and the University of Iowa for Deaf Education.

Bud's passion for his students spread beyond the school boundaries, Sandra said.

"He touched so many students' lives, and the lives of their families as well," she said.

Bud began his teaching career in the Shelby-Tennant (now A-H-S-T) School District, then taught in the Hamburg Schools. He started teaching in the Council Bluffs School District in 1958.

While in Council Bluffs, Bud taught at Longfellow and the former Eastside High School, and later when it became Abraham Lincoln High School, for 11 years. During his time at Abraham Lincoln, he also served as football coach, and had his best year in 1966 with the team going 6-3, Sandra said.

Bud left the Council Bluffs School District in 1969. From there, he went to work at the Iowa School for the Deaf, where he would spend the next 20 years working with people like Dan Gradoville, who was the school's athletic director at the time.

"Bud was an excellent coach, teacher, mentor and friend. He always had the interest and well-being of the students first. The kids were his priority and his focus," Gradoville said.

During that time, Gradoville called it "an honor and a pleasure" to work with Bud, and learned much about coaching from him. "He was unique. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to learn a lot about coaching from him. He was a tribute to the profession."

Bud's love of coaching football with deaf students paid off. Sandra said he was named National Association of the Deaf's Coach of the Year in 1988 for eight-man football.

"There is no doubt in my mind that there are a lot of former students in this world (who are) better off because they had the opportunity to have Bud for a coach," Gradoville said.

Bud was also inducted into the Council Bluffs Relays Hall of Fame in 2003.

The best part of Sandra's life with Bud came after she retired and he retired from ISD in 1989. From that point on, their relationship went to another level.

"We started traveling, gardening, and spending more time together," she said, "and I thought, 'why, we became better friends too.'"

Bud is also survived by a daughter, two sons and 11 grandchildren.

Aletha Frieda (Jedele) Nelson
July 26, 1919 - February 17, 2006

Aletha Frieda (Jedele) Nelson was born on July 26, 1919, and went to her heavenly home on Friday, February 17, 2006. She was born on a farm in Crawford County, Iowa, to Karl and Frieda Rath Jedele, the fourth of eight children. She became a child of God on October 8, 1919, through the Sacrament of Baptism, and confirmed her faith in Jesus Christ in March of 1932 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Her memory verse was from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Aletha attended Zion Lutheran School for eight years and graduated from Denison High School in 1936. After graduation she went to work in the County Superintendent of Schools office, taught grades 1-4 at Zion Lutheran School for two years, and returned to the County Superintendent’s office from 1939 until 1945 when her husband returned from the war.

Aletha married Russell Nelson of Irwin, Iowa, on October 19, 1941. Two children were born to Russ and Leth, Colleen Classen of Utica, Nebraska, and James Nelson of Creston, Iowa. They farmed near Irwin from 1945 to 1962. Russell then went into carpentry and Aletha worked at the ASCS office in Harlan, Iowa, for 23 years, enjoying her office work involving the farm programs.

After Aletha retired from the ASCS office at age 66, she learned to do hand-punch brailling and later with a manual machine. She went on to become certified by the US Library of Congress and volunteered for Lutheran Braille Workers Inc for more than 10 years.

Working for the Lord in whatever capacities she could was of the greatest importance to Aletha her whole life, from holding offices at church to helping clean the church. She also enjoyed her involvement with the Irwin Keenagers, the SW Iowa Agency on Aging, and quilting with the ladies at the Senior Center and at church.

She entered the nursing home in Friend, Nebraska, in August of 2001 where her daughter works. She and Colleen enjoyed many hours together over the next several years.

Aletha is survived by her daughter, Colleen (Tim) Classen, son, James (Cindy) Nelson, four granddaughters, Amy (William) Leonard of Las Vegas, Nevada, Nicole Classen of Burbank, California, Angela (Jason) Muldoon of Bloomfield, Iowa, and Andrea (Andrew) Cressman of Pasadena, Maryland, and five great grandchildren, Justin, Jessa and Jacklyn Muldoon and Keegan and Kendall Leonard. Melba Alberta, daughter of William and Laura (Eckholdt) Hamann, was born September 10, 1907, at home on the farm near Irwin, Iowa. She started her schooling in rural school near Irwin and completed it in the Manning Schools. Melba then moved to Chicago, Illinois, to work in a department store. After it was robbed, she felt uncomfortable living in the city and returned to Iowa.

She was a homemaker all of her life, caring for their two daughters. When Vernon retired from his last position with the railroad in Wall Lake in 1971, they made their home in Lake View where they enjoyed the final years of their seventy-two years of married life. In 1997, due to failing health, they became residents of Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View. Her husband died the next year at the age of 92 years.

Melba continued to live at the Black Hawk Life Care Center where she died on Friday, March 10, 2006, at the age of 98 years and 6 months.

After three years, they moved to Harlan. To this union, two children were born, but both son (1936) and daughter (1943) died at birth.
During WWII, she worked at the Harlan Tribune while her husband Mel served as the personal driver for nationally known war correspondents on the European war front. He later was able to bring that Jeep home, the only one to have seen combat duty to make it back to the States, all through efforts of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.
In 1946 Bernadine and Mel purchased the Sinclair Service Station at 5th and Market, adding Oldsmobile and Cadillac autos to the new White Motors full service dealership. She was actively involved as the bookkeeper until they sold the business in 1967 to Art Doran. Mel died Feb. 8, 1976. Bernadine purchased Mode O’Day clothing in 1970, and operated it on the square in downtown Harlan until retiring in 1979. During her tenure, she won numerous sales and achievement awards from the company.

After the death of her mother in 1949, they moved to the family home at 1605 6th ST and helped care for her father until he remarried. Bernadine and Mel bought the home in 1955, and she lived there until October 2001, when she moved to the assisted living apartments at Elm Crest. In October 2002, she moved to Elm Crest’s nursing care area.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Harlan; Harlan Chamber of Commerce, where she served as an officer in 1977-78; Shelby County Historical Society; and a charter member of Myrtue Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. As committee chairman, she was instrumental in founding the gift shop at the hospital in 1981, and served many years on that committee. Her husband, parents, children, stepmother, brother Gaillard, sister Irene and brother-in-law Leo Mores preceded her in death. She is survived by nephews: Steve (Michelle) Mores, Harlan; Dr. Robert (Lyn) Frederickson, Birmingham, AL; Alan (Donna) Mores, Harlan; Nieces: Barbara (Martin) Johnson, Glen Ellyn, IL; Suzie (Herb) Laney, Hinsdale, IL; and cousin Doris Anne (Mark) Anderson, W.
