Obituaries

Elaine T. Greiner

Elaine T. Greiner was born August 4, 1926, to parents, Fred and Rose Musich Greiner in Portsmouth, Iowa. There were three children in the family, RoseMary, Donald and Elaine, the youngest. She was baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth.

Her family moved to a farm near Defiance where Elaine started school. They later moved to a farm in the Logan community where she attended the country school. She fondly remembered that she had very good teachers but a lot of work was involved with their country teaching routines.

Elaine often told of the important chores at home that they were responsible for such as milking the cows and feeding the chickens. Her mother had a flower garden which sparked Elaine's lifelong love of flowers.

Following her education, Elaine continued to help her parents on the farm and cared for them until their deaths. After multiple hospitalizations and medical trips, Elaine found it more convenient to move to an apartment in Logan. She was employed there caring for children and for the elderly in their homes.

In her spare time she enjoyed her flower garden outside of her apartment and raising African violets inside. Other hobbies she enjoyed in her life included reading, embroidery and crocheting and listening to her large collection of country western music. She also enjoyed visiting with friends and spending time with her favorite people, her nieces and nephews. Through the years she was a long time active member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Logan.

In 2002, due to failing health, Elaine moved to the Westmont Care Center in Logan. To be nearer her family, in March of 2004, Elaine moved to the Manilla Manor in Manilla, Iowa. She will be remembered by the staff and residents at the manor as a kind and sweet lady with a beautiful smile, which brightened their days, and her cheerful disposition. She will also be fondly remembered there for her love of roses and her family donating many varieties to fill a planter especially constructed for them. Elaine enjoyed caring for them and the residents enjoyed their outdoor strolls to enjoy their beauty. The staff and residents will miss their "Rose Garden" lady.

Elaine died at the Manilla Manor Thursday afternoon, January 20, 2005 with her loving family at her side. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 78 years, 5 months and 16 days.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Rose Greiner; her brother, Donald Greiner; her sister, RoseMary Stephens; brother-in-law, Arlis Stephens; two nephews and one niece, Joseph and Mary Stephens who died in infancy and Patrick Stephens.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include four nephews and spouses, John and Linda Stephens of Dow City, Iowa, Jim and Sue Stephens of Dunlap, Iowa, Phil and Donna Stephens of Denison, Iowa, and Mike Stephens of Dow City, Iowa; two nieces and spouses, Michele and Russ Steffen of Dow City, Iowa and Susan and Gary Thaman of Denison, Iowa; many great nieces and nephews; many great great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Logan, Iowa with Father John Harmon as celebrant. Music for the mass included "On Eagles Wings," "Be Not Afraid," "Only A Shadow" and "Hail Mary Gentle Woman."

Pallbearers were John, Jim, Phil and Mike Stephens, Russ Steffen and Gary Thaman. Interment was at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Portsmouth, Iowa. Prior to the interment a luncheon was enjoyed at the church prepared and served by the ladies of St. Ann's Church. Fall from moving car kills Walnut teenager

WALNUT - A 15-year-old Walnut girl was killed Thursday afternoon when she fell from the hood of a moving vehicle and was run over.

Jennifer Sandbothe, 15, of Walnut was pronounced dead at Creighton University Medical Center shortly after the incident, Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker said.

Sandbothe and another girl, identified as Laura Johnk, 15, of rural Walnut, were traveling on the hood of a 1997 Plymouth Breeze, driven by Rachel Rieck, 16, of Walnut, as it left Walnut High School around 3:20 p.m. Thursday.

Danker said the car traveled to the intersection of Atlantic and Pleasant streets before turning north on Pacific Street. Both Sandbothe and Johnk continued to sit on the hood of the car, even as it was moving.

"It doesn't appear that they were going very fast," Danker said.

Preliminary investigation reports indicate that Sandbothe tried to get off the hood of the car as the vehicle approached her residence at 503 Pacific St.

As the car turned the corner, Sandbothe slid off the front but got caught and was dragged underneath the moving car.

Walnut Rescue was called to the scene and transported Sandbothe to Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan. From there, she was taken by a helicopter ambulance to Creighton University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Neither Johnk or Rieck suffered any injuries. All three of the girls were students at Walnut High School.

Danker said an investigation into the incident is ongoing and it is not known whether or criminal charges will be filed in the matter.

"It's a tragic accident," Danker said. "The kids thought they were having fun after school, but what they did was very dangerous."

Walnut Superintendent Jeff Kruse said the community is doing everything it can to help students and others deal with the unexpected loss.

Counselors and clergy will be at the Walnut schools today with local EMT professionals and a family that had a similar experience in recent years, Kruse said.

"We'll meet in a homeroom setting and let the kids ask questions," Kruse said. Those who need additional support from the crisis team will have it available to them during the day.

"It's a very quiet, somber tone in the building right now," Kruse said. "Counselors are there for the students, but they're also there for the staff."

The support team will remain at the school "as needed," he said.

Kruse described Sandbothy as a good, quiet student who was involved in activities. Both Johnk and Rieck are members of the school's varsity volleyball team.

Walnut's basketball games with Orient-Macksburg and Saturday's Snowball dance has been canceled. A DARE school program for today also has been postponed, Kruse said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as well as the other children involved, and we'll be here to assist in whatever way that may be," Kruse said.

Walnut remembers one of its own

Staff photo/Brien T. Boyce - A lone stuffed teddy bear sits near the red outline of where 15-year-old Jennifer Sandbothe's body lay after being run over by a car Thursday. She died as a result of her injuries.

WALNUT - A single red, spray-painted outline near the corner of Pacific and Pleasant streets serves as a grim reminder of the day Jennifer Sandbothe died.

Meanwhile, a steady stream of students filed in and out of the main office at the high school Friday morning. Parents, faculty members and teenagers alike embraced each other, hugging and crying throughout the hallways.

Jean Epley, owner of the Walnut Bureau newspaper, knew Sandbothe since she started kindergarten with Epley's youngest son, Jordan.

"Her (Sandbothe) and Jordan were really good friends," Epley said. "She was bubbly, sweet. Some kids are just a little extra special in your mind. She was one of those kids."

Sandbothe died Thursday afternoon after she fell from the hood of a car and was run over.

The 15-year-old sophomore was transported to Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, then transported via helicopter ambulance to Creighton University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Laura Johnk, also 15, was on the hood with Sandbothe as it left Walnut High School around 3:20 p.m. Rachel Rieck, 16, was driving the 1997 Plymouth Breeze.

Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker said as the car turned the corner and neared Sandbothe's home at 503 Pacific St., she attempted to get off the hood but got caught and was dragged underneath.

Johnk and Rieck did not suffer any injuries; and Danker said a decision on criminal charges, if any, will probably be made sometime next week.

"In a little town, everybody knows everybody," said a Walnut city employee who did not give her name, "and everybody's kids are everybody else's kids, so this hurts a lot."

Epley said she didn't know what Sandbothe wanted to do after she graduated from high school, "but she was going to be successful at whatever she decided to do with her life."

"It's a somber mood at the school today," said Walnut Superintendent Jeff Kruse. "The kids are remembering a friend."

Kruse said the funeral is being handled by Pauley-Jones Funeral Home and will be at the school Monday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Walnut.

Sandbothe was a smart girl, Kruse said, and High School Principal Jedd Sherman added she was "positive, and always respectful of the rules."

Sherman said Johnk and Rieck were at school Friday, and both were "in good shape."

Sandbothe's death, Kruse said, coincidentally allows the school to put one of its new programs, called "Circle of Support," to the test immediately.

Educators from four local school districts, including Walnut, took part of a conference several weeks ago at Myrtue Hospital on how to handle sensitive issues involving students, including suicide, depression and death.

"After this (Sandbothe's death), we're going to have to put this program and the information we got at the conference out there now, right off the bat," Sherman said.

For Epley, it breaks her heart that her son's longtime friend is gone.

"It's fun to watch kids grow up," Epley said, "and it breaks your heart when they don't get to."

Wiese, Francis Julius - death notice March 29, 2005

Francis Julius Wiese death notice March 29, 2005

KNOD NEWS MAGAZINE FOR TUESDAY, MARCH 29th, 2005

Later this morning, authorities are expected to release the name of the person killed in a tractor rollover yesterday. The rollover happened about 2-3 miles south of Portsmouth at 711 Cedar Road. One person was killed, but again, a name has not yet been released. Authorities say more details will be released sometime this morning.

UPDATE -- 10:45 AM

It now appears that a farmer who died in a field south of Portsmouth yesterday did not die from a tractor rollover. A report from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says 84-year-old Francis Weise was apparently off the tractor when he collapsed and died. The tractor had been left in gear and proceeded to roll into a ditch, where it overturned, some distance from Mr. Weise’s body.

Services for 84-year-old Francis Julius Wiese of Portsmouth will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, March 31st at St. Mary's Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth. Burial will be at the Harlan Cemetery. Francis Wiese died Monday, March 28th, at his home near Portsmouth. Friends may call from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm Wednesday, March 30th at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm.
