Robert Christian Andersen
September 16, 1921 - September 19, 2004

Robert Christian Andersen, the son of Martin and Johanna (Jensen) Andersen, was born on September 16, 1921, in Tennant, Iowa. He attended Rabbit Hollow #2 country school through the eighth grade. He served in the U.S. Army from October 19, 1942, until November 10, 1945, where he participated in the African and European Theatres. On December 25, 1946, Robert married Irma Johanna Sorensen at her parents’ home in Harlan, Iowa. The couple farmed east of Harlan for 36 years, retiring to Harlan in 1984. Irma died on July 17, 1993, in Harlan.
Robert was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. He was also a member of the Shelby County VFW Post 941. Refinishing furniture was one of Robert’s longtime hobbies. He enjoyed watching the neighborhood activity from a chair in his garage, and he loved bird watching.

Robert C. Andersen died on Sunday, September 19, 2004, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 83 years and 3 days.

Preceding Robert in death were his parents; his wife, Irma J. Andersen; two brothers, Arnold Andersen and Harold Andersen; and one infant granddaughter, Kathy Andersen. Survivors include three daughters, Linda (Art) Andersen of Owasso, Oklahoma, Bonnie (Allan) Ickes of Harlan, Iowa, and Debbie (Craig) Musfeldt of Manning, Iowa; two sons, Robert Andersen and his friend, Rhonda Brown, and Rick (Cheryl) Andersen, all of Harlan, Iowa; one brother, Raymond Andersen of Harlan, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Andersen of Harlan, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, Julie Livingston and Tammy Pond (children of Linda), Shawna Jacobsen, Sandra Harmon, and Carmen Ickes (children of Bonnie), Elisha Leinen, Marsha and Mark Andersen (children of Robert), Justin, Katie, and Joel Musfeldt (children of Debbie), and Ross, Nathan, and Cali Andersen (children of Rick); 9 great-grandchildren; one nephew, Allan Andersen of Harlan, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Heather Ploen officiating. Marge Ahrenholtz served as organist and Lee Nelson was the soloist. Honorary casket bearers were Allan Andersen, Phil Daringer, Max Bacon, Norman Piercy, and Leonard Petsche. Active casket bearers were Mark Andersen, Justin Musfeldt, Ross Andersen, Steve Livingston, Josh Leinen, and Tyler Jacobsen. Shelby County VFW Post #941 and Helmer Reyelt AL Post #150 were in charge of military rites. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. OAKLAND - The funeral for Ilene May Applegate, 87, of Oakland will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Oakland United Methodist Church.

She died Aug. 7 at Oakland Manor.

She was born Sept. 26, 1916, in Minden to Calvin and Mable (Pflug) Leaders.

Mrs. Applegate was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Roger; her parents; her son-in-law, Gene Ralston; one great-grandchild; and her brothers, Lloyd and Vernon Leaders.

Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Applegate of Oakland, Marilyn Ralston of Bellevue, Neb., and Karen Johnson and husband, Les, of Rockwell City; two sons, Don and wife, LaDonna, of Oakland and Richard and wife, Teri "Toni" of Yorkville, Ill.; two sisters, Gladys White of Oakland and Lou Ellen "Tootie" Graalfs and husband, Gene, of Council Bluffs; four brothers, Wayne Leaders and wife, Wanda, of Council Bluffs, Calvin Leaders Jr. and wife, Dorothy, of Dunlap, Gerald Leaders and wife, Ardythe, of Dunlap and Lowell Leaders and wife, Phyllis, of Minden; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Open visitation will be today at Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery in Oakland.

Benson is a former Harlan resident. Mena Marie Burmeister
January 18, 1911 - September 19, 2004

Mena Marie Edith Burmeister, the daughter of Jens Christian and Inger (Johnson) Thogerson, was born on January 18, 1911, near Kirkman, Iowa. She lived there until she was six years old, when her father died. Mena’s family moved to Harlan, Iowa. After graduating from Harlan High School and attending Normal Training, Mena taught country school west of Harlan for seven years. On May 31, 1936, she married Harry Thede Burmeister at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. The couple farmed for many years, retiring in 1972. Harry died on October 19, 2001, in Harlan.

Mena was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, where she was active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church Women activities and especially enjoyed mission quilting.

Mena Burmeister died on Sunday, September 19, 2004, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, having reached the age of 93 years, 8 months, and 1 day.

Preceding Mena in death were her parents; her husband, Harry T. Burmeister; two sisters, Marjorie Grosbeck and Frances Wigness; and two brothers, Nels Thogerson and Dolliver Thogerson. She is survived by six sons, Robert (Sharon) Burmeister of Show Low, Arizona, Richard (Sharon) Burmeister of Harlan, Iowa, Jerome (Rose) Burmeister of Ft. Evelyn Frances Camery
December 15, 1905 - September 16, 2004

Evelyn Frances Camery, the daughter of Charles A. and Ida (Fredericksen) Rold, was born on December 15, 1905, in rural Harlan, near Cuppy’s Grove, Iowa. She attended country school in Cuppy’s Grove, and graduated from Harlan High School in 1922. On October, 26, 1923, Evelyn married Morgan Arthur Camery in North Branch, Iowa. The couple ran a retail electronics store behind their Harlan home for many years. Art died on June 18, 1986. Evelyn continued to live in her Harlan home until her health caused her to move to the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, and later to the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center.


Evelyn was a member of the First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa. She was also a 50-year member of Eastern Star Lebanon #8 in Harlan. Evelyn enjoyed sewing and doing handwork.

Evelyn F. Camery died on Thursday, September 16, 2004, at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic, Iowa, at the age of 98 years, 9 months, and 1 day.

Preceding Evelyn in death were her parents; her husband, Morgan A. Camery; and two sons, Robert D. Camery, in 1977, and Donald E. Camery, in 1946. Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Donna Camery of Atlantic, Iowa; three grandchildren, Lori (Ken) Peppmeier of Shannon City, Iowa, Brent (Carolyn) Camery of Des Moines, Iowa, and Teri Sue Camery of Juneau, Alaska; one niece, Marilyn Schiltz of Omaha, Nebraska; and four great-grandchildren.

Martha Mildred Evans, 95, died in Billings, Montana August 2, 2004. She was born to Elmer A. and Grace (Young) Maxwell on November 11, 1908 in Woodbine, Iowa. She attended school in Woodbine and graduated from Woodbine Normal School in 1926. She taught country school near Woodbine and attended and graduated from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls Iowa. She taught in Irwin Iowa for five years. She married Charles Harold Evans on June 8, 1939 in her parents’ home in Woodbine. To this marriage a son, John Harold was born in September 1942. Harold was called to military service in November 1944 and was killed in action one year later. She taught kindergarten, third grade, and was a reading tutor in Woodbine Public School until her retirement in 1974. She continued to live in her home in Woodbine until 1996 when she moved to Billings to be near her son and family.

Mom was a remarkable woman. She was a committed Christian, loving mother, dedicated teacher, and active in her community. She loved her country, was a true patriot and remained interested in national and international affairs until her death. She was active in her church, serving on boards and committees and taught an adult Sunday School class for many, many years. She loved to read and study the Bible. This passion continued as she was active in a Bible study group in her retirement home at Westpark Village in Billings. She provided for and raised her son with love, compassion and understanding, being both a mother and a father. She was born to be a teacher, nurturing and encouraging each student to experience learning to the fullest. She was proud of her community and looked for opportunities to participate. She served on the board of the Woodbine Community Development Corporation which was instrumental in the planning and construction of a low income housing project.

She was a strong supporter of the American Field Service program which brought foreign exchange students to Woodbine for the school year. Although she was not able to host a student, she enjoyed getting to know each student and maintained contact with several of them until the end of her life. In addition to her love of country, she loved to travel inside and outside the United States and took great pride in recalling the highlights of each trip. She had a passion for genealogy and completed an extended search of her heritage and family tree. She believed that it was important to keep both her mind and body active and true to her belief she walked regularly and read with eagerness. She loved poetry, collected several poetry books and could recall and recite many favorite poems.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Harold, her mother and father, and her sister, Mabel Poe. She is survived by her son John, his wife Dorothy of Billings, Montana; grandchildren Lynette Oderifero (Dan) and Philip Evans (Myki): six great-grandchildren: her sister, Marjorie Hood of Woodbine, Iowa and many other relatives and friends.

Vincent was a U.S. Navy veteran and a past member of The Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Queen of Apostles Catholic Church and taught CCD classes at St. Albert and Holy Family Catholic Church.

Vincent is preceded in death by his parents, Henry C. and Mary (Wingert) Goeser; brothers, Cyril, and the Rev. Ralph Goeser; and his daughter, Patricia Goeser.

Gerald Richard “Jerry” Grote was born to Frederick Richard and Loretta Mary (Daeges) Grote on April 1, 1948, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Jerry attended Catholic school first through sixth grades, and then went to country school for a year. He returned to Catholic school, and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Portsmouth in 1966. Jerry worked the pork plant in Harlan, Iowa, from 1967-68. He entered the Army in February, 1968, and served one tour of duty in Vietnam. After his discharge in September, 1969, he again worked at the pork plant.

Jerry married Janis Kay Sorensen on August 22, 1970, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Two sons were born to this union. In February, 1975, Jerry rejoined the Army. The couple lived in Ft. Riley, Kansas, Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, Nuremberg and Hanau, Germany, and Ft. Ord, California. Jerry served two tours of duty in Korea before returning to Ft. Sill. He retired from the Army after serving for 20 years. Jerry and Janis then lived in Lawton, Oklahoma for two years while he worked for the Army Air Force Exchange Service. They moved back to Harlan in January, 1994, where Jerry worked at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in the maintenance department and as a cook. In September, 1997, he took a job at Molded Products in Harlan, where he was employed until 2001, when he was laid off. Jerry then worked at Perkins in Omaha, Nebraska, until June, 2003, when he began working for REM Leadway in Shelby, Iowa. In February, 2004, Jerry was diagnosed with bone cancer, which prevented him from working any longer.

Jerry was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, the Saddle Club in Shelby, and the American Legion.

Gerald R. “Jerry” Grote died on Sunday, September 5, 2004, at his Harlan home, having reached the age of 56 years, 5 months, and 4 days.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father and one niece, Stephanie Grote. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Janis Grote of Harlan, Iowa; two sons, Jamie (Mary) Grote of Willmar, Minnesota, and Randy (Bonnie) Grote of Harlan, Iowa; his mother, Loretta Grote of Harlan, Iowa; four sisters, Jeannie (Daryl) Jensen of Shelby, Iowa, Nancy (Randy) Palmer and Connie McElderry, both of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Mary (Bud) VanCamp of Harlan, Iowa; two brothers, Mark (Cheryl) Grote of Harlan, Iowa, and Ronald (Kim) Grote of Washington, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Sandra Brennan of Harlan, Iowa; four grandchildren, Joshua Grote, Kate Grote, Anna Grote, and Sophia Grote; two step-grandchildren, Brandon Trevino and Brian Trevino; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, September 10, 2004, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Father Robert Hoefler celebrating. Kathleen Kohorst and Maryalyce Dotzler served as musicians. Casket bearers were David Jensen, Danny Jensen, Doug Schneider, Danny Schneider, Jennifer Brennan, and Patrick Palmer. Shelby County VFW Post #941 and Helmer Reyelt AL Post #150 were in charge of military rites. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements.

AVOCA - Ella L. Hundt, 90, of Gretna Community Living Center in Gretna, Neb., died July 21 at the center.

She was born in rural Cumberland. She previously lived on a farm near Minden and then retired to live in Shelby, moving to the Living Center in June 2004. She attended country school, graduated from MME Kennedy Beauty School of Des Moines and while in California graduated from Santa Barbara Business College. She worked for six years in California as a domestic housekeeper. She returned to Iowa where she worked at Builders Supply Co. and Sears & Roebuck in Atlantic. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Oakland, active in LCMS of the church, Wather League, Fellowship Club, Altar Guild and Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She held offices in Business and Professional Women's organizations. She was a member of Shelby Garden Club and Senior Citizens Friendship Club while in Shelby.

Mrs. Hundt was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Hundt, on Oct. 19, 1990. They were married 38 years. She was also preceded in death by parents John and Helene Steffens and 12 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include daughter, Judith, and husband, Dale McPheeters, of Omaha; stepchildren, Lorraine and husband, Richard Norman of Gretna, Neb.; Shirley and husband Grover (Varel) Holaday of Lewis and Robert Hundt and wife, Karen, of Avoca; 12 step-grandchildren; 26 step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Irene Steffens and Ruth Steffens, both of Atlantic and Alberta Steffens of Cumberland.

AVOCA - Anita Jacobsen, 96, of Avoca died Aug. 2 at Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born near Walnut and attended country schools near Walnut and Corley.

She and her husband, Carl, were married for 59 years and they lived on various farms in Shelby County before moving to Avoca in 1968.

She was a homemaker. She also was employed as a housekeeper at the Capri Motel for seven years following their move to Avoca. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Avoca and the church's Ladies Aid Group.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 3, 1988. She was also preceded by her parents; a son, Glen; two brothers, Ivan Woltmann and Arnold Woltmann; and a son-in-law, Eugene Matthiessen.

Survivors include two daughters, Elaine Schroder and husband, Loren, of Avoca and Lois Matthiessen of Omaha; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law Bernitta Sweetman and husband, Don, of Council Bluffs.

Visitation at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca is today from 4 to 9 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday. The family will greet friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The funeral will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Bernard Daiker officiating.

Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Avoca.

Gertrude Marie Jacobsen, the daughter of Amiel and Hulda Helen (Fries) Troll, was born on September 26, 1919, in Monroe Township, rural Walnut, Iowa. She attended Monroe Township #5 country school through the eighth grade. Gertrude then worked as a hired girl, helping area families. She later did house cleaning, and in the 1960’s, cleaned the Immanuel Lutheran Church and parsonage in Harlan, Iowa. On June 1, 1942, she married John Harold Jacobsen in Papillion, Nebraska.

Gertrude was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, where she was baptized on November 7, 1948. She was active in the Neighborhood Club, played cards, and enjoyed polka music and watching professional wrestling. Gertrude also enjoyed embroidering, making quilt blocks, canning, baking, and gardening. She liked to play Bingo and had called Bingo at the Elm Crest Retirement Community.

Gertrude M. Jacobsen died on Saturday, August 21, 2004, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 84 years, 10 months, and 26 days.

Preceding Gertrude in death were her parents; her husband, John H. Jacobsen, on July 31, 1989; one son, Merlen (Merv) Jacobsen; and two brothers, Wilfred Troll and Alvin Troll. Johnson, Richard "Dick" LeRoy - August 15, 2004

Richard 'Dick' Johnson

Richard "Dick" LeRoy Johnson, 68, of Missouri Valley, Iowa died on Sunday, August 15, 2004 at Alegent Health Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley from complications following a recent surgery.

Visitation with family present began at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Missouri Valley with a Rosary at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 19, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Missouri Valley. Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home in Missouri Valley was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Dick was born on August 1, 1936 in Armstrong, Iowa to Theodore "Ted" LeRoy and Leona Marie Blekfeld Johnson. He attended Armstrong schools and graduated from Armstrong High School in 1954. He served in the United States Air Force from January 1957 through October 1961, during which time he was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base and also spent some time deployed in Turkey.

On June 14, 1958, he married Eleanor "Jean" Elbert at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Whittemore, Iowa. They resided in Plattsmouth, Neb., until October of 1961 when they moved to Dick's hometown of Armstrong where Dick assisted his father in the construction business. The family moved to Missouri Valley when Dick joined the Iowa Conservation Commission (now known as the Department of Natural Resources) in October 1964 and became the Game Warden for Harrison and Shelby counties. Dick and Jean had three children: Nancy, Rich, and Bruce. Dick continued to serve as Game Warden for Harrison and Shelby counties for 37 years, until his retirement in December of 2000. For several years Dick wrote a hunting and fishing column that was published in the Reporter.

During his career, Dick became a firearms instructor, a certified Peace Officer, and carried a Federal Fish and Wildlife Deputy Badge. He enjoyed teaching Hunter's Safety classes, especially for youth programs. He also competed in and won many awards in firearms shooting competitions throughout the years.

Dick was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Missouri Valley, a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the National Wild Turkey Foundation, a lifetime member of the NRA and Pheasants Forever, and served the Boy Scouts in many capacities.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Jean Elbert Johnson; one daughter, Nancy Jane Johnson Abel and her husband Michael E. Abel of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two sons, Richard LeRoy Johnson, Jr. and his wife Grace Yeung Johnson of Bloomington, Minn., and Bruce James Johnson of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren, Andrew, Aaron and Allison Abel, and Kiera and Kirsten Johnson; his mother, Leona Johnson of Armstrong, Iowa; and a brother, Jerry James Johnson of Cortez, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his father, Theodore Johnson.

Dick was a lifelong outdoorsman devoted to causes such as wildlife conservation and hunting safety. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to a memorial that has been established at TierOne Bank, 205 East Erie, Missouri Valley, Iowa 51555.

MISSOURI VALLEY - Dick Johnson was not a game warden who especially relished catching hunters and fishermen without a license.

"For him it was about teaching people," said Johnson's son, Rich.

Johnson, 68, died Sunday from complications following recent surgery and was buried this morning. He was the Harrison and Shelby County Game Warden from 1964 until his retirement in December 2000.

"I was lucky I was able to ride around with Dad on the job when I was a kid," Rich said. "What I remember most was him talking with people. He was a natural at it, a real people person."

But Rich said his father did not talk just to chat.

"He was a teacher. He saw his job more as education than enforcement and liked teaching people about the law and about safety," Rich said.

He said Dick especially enjoyed teaching children as part of the Hunter's Safety classes.

"He said if he got them early, it would save him a lot of problems down the road," Rich said.

"He's going to be missed by a lot of people, not just his family," Rich said. "Dad was very active. The Missouri Valley community will miss him."

Dick was born in Armstrong in 1936 and graduated from its high school. He served in the Air Force from 1957 to 1961.

He married Eleanor "Jean" Elbert in 1958, and she survives him, along with three children, Rich, Nancy and Bruce and their families.

"I always thought growing up, 'It is so cool to have a dad who's the game warden,'" Rich said. "And, you know, looking back, it really was cool."

Publisher Helen Mores helped build Iowa library

Helen Mores of Harlan, Iowa, who with her husband, Leo, published the Harlan Tribune, has died at age 86.

She was a reporter, society editor and bookkeeper at the newspaper. She ran it as general manager for three years while her husband, whom she married in 1942, served in World War II.

When he returned to Harlan, the couple purchased a competing paper and established a twice-weekly publication.

Mores, who liked to be called Irene, helped provide funding that led to the construction of Harlan's Community Library.

She graduated from Harlan High School in 1936 and the University of Iowa in 1941.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. today at First Baptist Church in Harlan.

HARLAN -- Former Harlan Newspapers co-publisher Helen (Irene) Mores, 86, Harlan, died Wed., Sept. 22 at Elm Crest Retirement Center, Harlan, after a lingering illness.

Family will meet friends on Friday, Sept. 24 from 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Sat., Sept. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.

Salutatorian of the HHS class of 1936 and graduate of the Univ. of Iowa with a BA in commerce, she married Harlan Tribune publisher Leo Mores on June 16,1942. While Leo served in WWII, she ran the family newspaper for three years. Upon Leo's return from military service in 1945, they purchased the competing Harlan News-Advertiser, and the operation became a twice-weekly newspaper. She retired from the family business in the mid-1990s.

Irene was a charter member of the First Baptist Church and past president and treasurer of the church Father Lights Society.

She was a past board and charter member of the Baptist Memorial Home (now Elm Crest) and was a leader in numerous fund drives for the facility. In 1997, she was honored for her more than 20 years of service to the Memorial Home Auxiliary.

A 1958 charter member of the Myrtue Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, she served until 1995. She also served the Harlan Library Board as president, vice president and secretary treasurer and co-chaired the fund drive for the construction of the new Harlan Community Library.

She was secretary of the Jones Beach (West Okoboji) Property Owners Assoc. for more than 20 years.

In 1975, she was named Merit Mother of Harlan; in 1976 she was named Iowa Merit Mother of the year, and in 1978 was named one of Harlan's Citizens of the Years.

She is survived by her husband, Leo; four children: Steve (Michelle) Mores, Harlan; Barbara (Martin) Johnson, Glen Ellyn, IL; Suzie (Herb) Laney, Hinsdale, IL and Alan (Donna Christensen-Mores) Mores, Harlan; nine grandchildren and one great grand daughter. Survivors also include: sister Bernadine K. White, Harlan; sister-in-law Sally (Gaillord) Frederickson, Birmingham, AL; nephew Dr. Robert Frederickson, Birmingham, AL and many other cousins. She was preceeded in death by her parents and brother Gaillord.

Kenneth (Kenny) Mouser, retired Wellington Police Chief, lost his long and courageous battle with cancer on July 2, 2004, at Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 75 years, 9 months, and 22 days. Kenny was the son of George H. and Gladys O. (Nelson) Mouser. He attended Wellington schools, Wichita Business College, and was a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Quantico, Va.

He served in the U.S. Army as a surgical technician with the 1st Calvary Division in the Far East Command, was stationed in Japan, Philippine Islands and in Korea during the Korean Conflict receiving an honorable discharge in May of 1953.

He began his law enforcement career January 1, 1956 with the Sumner County Sheriff's Department serving there until October 1, 1957 when he began his work with the Wellington Police Department. He became Police Chief April 28, 1971 and retired from the position April 28, 1980.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Church, FBI National Academy Association, National Rifle Association and Kansas Peace Officers Association.

He was united in marriage on September 16, 1952 to Helen L. Reinig in Panama, Iowa. To this union two children were born, a daughter JoAnn and son Richard.

He will be remembered for his dedication to law enforcement. Kenny was an avid sportsman, enjoyed fishing and hunting where he would often nurture injured wild life in need. He will be remembered for his humor, jokes, story antics, witticism, and quips.

He is preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Gordon, Fred, Helen, and Keith.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years Helen of the home; his daughter JoAnn Blackmore and husband Mark, son Richard and wife Debbie of Wichita; five grandchildren, Alison Bogart and husband Justin of Mission, Kan., Alicia Blackmore of New York City, and Kristen Mouser, Craig Mouser, and Tom Mouser of Wichita, Kansas.

The Vigil Service will be held Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Hawks Funeral Home.

AVOCA - Randall "Randy" Plagman, 21, of Shelby died Sept. 30 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan after a battle with cancer.

Plagman was born in Council Bluffs but grew up in Shelby and graduated from A-H-S-T High School in 2001. He was employed by Kiewit Construction Company and was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Harlan.

Plagman is survived by his parents, Bob and Colette Plagman, of Shelby; brothers, Ryan Plagman of Atlantic, and Richy Plagman of Shelby; sister, Robyn, and husband, Ryan Pieken, of Atlantic; paternal grandfather, Robert, and wife, Donna Plagman, Sr., of Council Bluffs; paternal grandmother, Betty, and husband, Jim Aken, of Omaha; maternal grandmother, Glenna Bone of Shelby; and great-grandmother, Evelyn Plagman of Avoca.

Everett H. Rasmussen, 80, of Council Bluffs died Aug. 17 at Northcrest Care Center.

He was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Manilla to Andrew and Matilda (Johnson) Rasmussen. He was a wireman for Fruehauf Co., in Omaha for 22 years, retiring in 1989. He was of the Catholic faith.

Mr. Rasmussen was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Rasmussen, in 1992. They were married 52 years. He was also preceded in death by sister, Mildred Smidt, in 2001.

Survivors include sons, Dennis D. Rasmussen and wife, Judy, of Herdon, Va., Daniel L. Rasmussen and wife, Donna, of Sterling Heights, Mich. and David C. Emma M. Ridlen

Emma Mae Ridlen, 85, of rural Underwood died July 12 at the home of her daughter, Marcella Ridlen Ray, in Fairfax, Va.

She was born Aug. 26, 1918, in York, Neb., to John E. and Florence (Marsh) Armstrong. She previously lived in Oakland, Lewis and Shelby areas. She lived in rural Underwood since 1955. She was a 1938 graduate of Lewis Consolidated High School, Lewis. She was a homemaker and ceramics teacher and owner of Emlen Ceramic Shop since 1956. She was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church and sponsored college scholarships. She was active in the communities in which she lived, helping to start clubs, teaching in adult education and supporting community projects.

Mrs. Ridlen was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard J. Ridlen, on Dec. 24, 1997. They were married March 10, 1940. She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Maynard Ernest Ridlen; and daughter, Ellen Martha Ridlen.

Survivors include daughters, Marcella Ridlen Ray and husband, Charles, of Fairfax, Va., Sylvia Ridlen of Jersey City, N.J., Ivayla Ridlen of Centennial, Colo., Elaine Raeber of Fremont, Calif.; granddaughter, Jamie Green, of Jersey City, N.J.; grandsons, Ryan Ridlen of Stockton, Calif., Cory Ridlen of Centennial, Colo.; sister, Elva Lucille Damgaard, of Carson; nieces and nephews; many friends.

She was born in Brainard, MN and married Raymon E. Stull in 1931, divorced, and married Gerald Thieman in 1958. She resided in Huntington Beach, CA from 1975 until 2000, when she moved to Elk Horn, IA. Pallbearers are great-grandsons, Pat, Joseph, Tom, Robert, David and Matt. She was a Member of the Rebecca Lodge #404 in Omaha for 60 years.

ANITA -- Lucile P. Tryon, 91, Anita, formerly of Defiance, died Thursday, Sept. 16 in Anita.
Services were held Monday, Sept. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Defiance United Methodist Church with burial in the Union Township Cemetery at Defiance.
Tryon is survived by son Jim of Aurora, Co.; daughters Pat Papenheim of Des Moines and Luella (James) Bartelson of Anita; 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Lucile Pauline Tryon
September 8, 1913 - September 16, 2004

Lucile Pauline Tryon, the daughter of Elmer and Jessie (Wilson) McBride, was born on September 8, 1913, in Defiance, Iowa. She grew up in Defiance and graduated from Defiance High School in 1929. After attending Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for a year, she taught country school in Shelby County for nine years. On June 2, 1940, Lucile married James Riley Tryon at the church parsonage in Defiance. The couple farmed in rural Defiance until 1981. They lived on the farm until 1967, when they moved into Defiance. From 1971-76, Lucile and James owned and operated a drive-in restaurant in Defiance. James died on February 21, 1985, in Harlan, Iowa. Lucile continued living their Defiance home until December, 1999, when she moved to the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan. In September, 2003, she became a resident of the Colonial Manor in Anita, Iowa.

Lucile was a member of the Defiance United Methodist Church in Defiance, Iowa. She was also a member of the Shelby County Extension Council for many years. She was active in the 4-H program, the Harlan Area Christian Women’s Club, and she had served as a Union Township Cemetery board member. In 1999, Lucile was honored as Defiance Citizen of the Year. She enjoyed spending time doing cross-stitch projects and reading.

Lucile P. Tryon died on Thursday, September 16, 2004, at the Colonial Manor in Anita, Iowa, at the age of 91 years and 8 days.

Preceding Lucile in death were her parents; her husband, James R. Tryon; and one sister, LaVerne Meyers. Survivors include one son, Jim Tryon of Aurora, Colorado; two daughters, Pat Papenheim of Des Moines, Iowa, and Luella (James) Bartelson of Anita, Iowa; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, September 20, 2004, at the Defiance United Methodist Church in Defiance, Iowa, with Rev. Keith Pals and Pastor Walter Bernard officiating. Paulette Rasmussen served as the organist, and Bill and Louise Ahrenholtz were the vocalists. Casket bearers were Mark Tryon, Brian Bartelson, Terry Densmore, Ronald Tryon, Robert Tryon, Dick Tryon, and Jim Hulsebus. Burial was in the Union Township Cemetery in Defiance, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements.

Beryle E. (Grosvenor) Valentine, 85, of Council Bluffs died July 23, at Indian Hills Care Center.

Mrs. Valentine was preceded in death by her parents, Bryan and June Grosvenor; husband, Russell Valentine; three sisters and two brothers.

Mrs. Valentine is survived by her daughter, Valerie Brockman and husband, Lyle, of Council Bluffs; grandchildren Jeff Brockman of Harlan, JoAnna Letz and husband, Michael, of Council Bluffs, James Brockman and wife, Kristi, of  Council Bluffs; great-grandchildren, Victoria and Erik Letz, Chase Brockman; sisters Ruth Snyder of Council Bluffs, Roberta Carver of Watknsville, Ga.; sister-in-law Carol Carroll of Fairmont, Neb., brother-in-law, Marion Valentine of Council Bluffs; many nieces, nephews and family.

Visitation with the family will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at McCurdy Funeral Home. Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with the Pastor Aaron Simons officiating. Interment will follow at Ridgewood Cemetery.
