Iowa Man Dies From West Nile Virus
Health Officials Warn Of High Mosquito Count

POSTED: 2:49 pm CDT July 8, 2004
UPDATED: 5:12 pm CDT July 8, 2004

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The West Nile virus has turned deadly in Iowa again.

State health officials say Iowa has recorded its first death this year from the mosquito-borne disease.

Thursday, the Iowa Department of Public Health said a southwest Iowa man in his 60s, who spent a great deal of time outdoors, died while hospitalized with the illness.

The department's director, Dr. Mary Mincer Hansen, said it's just the second West Nile death nationwide this summer. The nation's first West Nile death was in Arizona.

Last year, Iowa had 147 human cases, including six deaths.

Birds in several Iowa counties have tested positive for the virus this year.

State epidemiologist Dr. Patricia Quinlisk said Iowa is seeing large mosquito numbers this summer.

Prevent West Nile
West Nile is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus while feeding on an infected bird. The illness is not spread person-to-person.

To reduce exposure to West Nile, health officials suggest:

Limit outdoor activities at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
If outside, wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes and socks.
Use mosquito repellent containing DEET on exposed skin.
Eliminate mosquito breeding sites, such as standing water in tires, plastic containers, or similar water-holding containers.
Change water in bird baths on a weekly basis.

Most humans infected by the West Nile virus have no symptoms, while a few may have symptoms such as a fever and headache. Less than 1 percent become seriously ill. Symptoms typically occur within three to 15 days after the bite of the infected mosquito. Those seriously infected, particularly the elderly, may display symptoms such as muscle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, and convulsions, and very rarely results in death.

Iowa man dies of West Nile
BY NICHOLE AKSAMIT WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

West Nile virus has claimed the life of a 62-year-old Harlan, Iowa, man who worked outdoors and whose middle name was Nile, his daughter said.

Tammy Less of Omaha received her father's autopsy report Thursday, a week after his funeral and the day Iowa health officials announced the state's first human West Nile case and the second West Nile death in the country this season.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Public Health said only that the victim was a southwest Iowa man in his 60s who had a high exposure to mosquitoes that carry the virus. Test results, they said, confirmed that he died of complications from West Nile encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain.

William Nile Brower, who died June 27 at the VA Medical Center in Omaha, fits that profile.

Less said doctors think Brower had viral meningitis and that it quickly worsened to encephalitis. She said that, until his sudden illness, her father was active and healthy.

"The only thing he doctored for was a little bit of high blood pressure, and even that was not that bad," she said. "He always did physical types of work."

But, she said, the divorced former truck driver and carpenter was outside four to five times a week and in frequent contact with mosquitoes.

Less said she and her father mowed grass near rest areas along Interstates 29 and 80 under a contract for the Iowa Department of Transportation. Though she carried bug spray, Less said her dad rarely wore long sleeves and probably had not been using repellent.

She said they began to notice mosquitoes while mowing in mid-June. They were working along I-29 near Sioux City on June 17 when Brower first became ill.

"I mowed one side and he just came back over to my side and said, 'I can't mow it or blow it. Can you finish?' He just was not feeling well," she recalled.

Less said her father went to the hospital June 21 and died six days later when his heart, kidney and lungs failed. Less said autopsy results Thursday confirmed West Nile virus as the underlying cause.

"It's never easy," she said. "But it's just shocking to lose him so fast."

Less said Brower's middle name, Nile, was his father's first name.

"There's a little bit of irony there I guess," she said.

Though most people who are infected with West Nile virus never get sick, the virus can cause meningitis (a swelling of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord) and encephalitis. Both conditions can cause organ failure and death.

As of Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 78 human cases nationwide, including one in Nebraska and one other fatality announced in Arizona on July 1.

Last year, 147 Iowans were infected with the virus; six died. In 2003, the state's first human case was reported July 18, and the first fatality wasn't reported until August.

"It's surprising that our first case is a fatality," said Kevin Teale, spokesman for the Iowa Department of Public Health. He said that it's hard to tell what that means for the following months.

Less said she hopes news of her father's death inspires others to take precautions.

"I just hope people will notice it and think twice about going outside with no OFF! (bug spray)," she said. "We all think we're invincible. But it can get you."

World-Herald staff writer Kamahria Hopkins contributed to this report.

Love Of Outdoors Exposed Man To West Nile Virus
Iowa's First Fatality Reported

POSTED: 3:15 p.m. CDT July 9, 2004
UPDATED: 5:18 p.m. CDT July 9, 2004

OMAHA, Neb. -- A love of the outdoors may have led to Iowa's first West Nile virus fatality this year.

William Brower, of Harlan, died June 27. Thursday, officials confirmed Brower's death as the first caused by the mosquito-borne illness in 2004 in the state.

Brower's daughter, Tammy Less, of Omaha, said her father was strong and healthy and that he enjoyed working outdoors. When he was hospitalized, doctors suspected West Nile virus immediately.

"They were talking to us, 'Did he work in tall grass? Could he have been bitten by a mosquito?'" Less said. "I said, 'Of course.' I know I had been."

Brower's first signs of illness came on about three weeks ago while mowing grass at a local rest area.

"He said, 'I'm not feeling well. You're going to have to finish,'" Less said.

After five days, he was taken to a hospital.

"(We're) confident he got wonderful care (it) just didn't happen fast enough," Less said.

Less wanted to tell her family's story to help honor her dad, and to remind everyone about the threat of West Nile virus.

"Take the extra time to put on the Off," Less said. "It can make all the difference. We never thought it would happen to our father."

'It was just a big shock'

HARLAN - Janelle Kenkel of Harlan just can't believe her fiance is gone.

William Nile Brower, 62, also of Harlan, died June 27 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Omaha of West Nile virus.

"It was just a big shock," she said. "He thought he had the flu."

The diagnosis was confirmed Thursday after tests by the Iowa Hygienic Lab in Iowa City. It was the state's first death from West Nile this year.

Brower was in good health before he contracted the illness, Kenkel said.

"He was always out working and everything," she said. "He didn't act like he was 62."

Kenkel, 34, and Brower had known each other for five years and dated for about three, she said. They planned to get married, although they had not set a date.

"We were in Vegas in February, and he asked me then," she said. "We were planning to go back to Vegas in September, and I suppose we might have gotten married then."

Brower was a caring person with a good sense of humor, said Kenkel, who was separated from her previous husband five years ago. He was comfortable with her boys, ages 10, 8, 6 and 4.

"He loved children," she said. "He's pretty much helped me raise them. He was a good father to them."

Brower started showing symptoms on Father's Day weekend and agreed to see a doctor on June 21, Kenkel said. He was having diarrhea and running a fever, she said.

"He was just so dehydrated by then," she said.

Kenkel took him to the Veterans Administration Hospital, where they admitted him immediately. They gave him fluids, took X-rays and did lab tests. They started him on antibiotics either that night or the next day, she said.

"Friday (June 25), they found out he had meningitis and encephalitis," she said.

Friends and family members assume Brower was bitten while mowing at rest areas and weigh stations, which he did on contract for the state of Iowa, Kenkel said.

"It's hard to know where he got bit," she said. "It might not have been at the rest areas like we're thinking. It might have been right here in Harlan."

Although he and his daughter, Tammy Less of Omaha, spent a lot of time outside doing the work, they seldom put on insect repellent, Kenkel said.

"We've been talking, and she said before that she would only put it on once in a while in certain spots where they knew there were mosquitoes," she said. "A lot of times, she said, it was the flies that would bother them, and she said she would put some on, and he rarely did.

"I think all of us will spray now every time we go outside."

Randy Francis enjoyed raising cattle, hunting

BY BETSIE FREEMAN

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Randy Francis was a cowboy at heart.

The agricultural loan officer at Farm Credit Services in Harlan, Iowa, raised Texas longhorn cattle near Woodbine, said his wife, Melanie.

Francis, 32, was only 1,000 feet east of the driveway at his home when the car he was driving hit a ditch and rolled early Sunday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The car apparently struck the driveway to a farm field, overturned and hit a power pole, a spokesman for the Harrison County Sheriff's Office said.

Francis was born in St. Paul, Neb., and graduated from Central City (Neb.) High School. He earned a degree in agricultural business from Northwest Missouri State University in 1993.

He met his future wife when he was employed at a Blair, Neb., branch of First National Bank of Omaha and she was a student at Dana College. They married in 1999.

Melanie Francis said her husband was known for his positive outlook.

"He was the happiest person," she said. "He had the most contagious smile."

He was a hunting enthusiast who belonged to Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited and the National Rifle Association. He also was a member of the Harrison County Cattlemen.

Other survivors include two sons, Wyatt, 21/2, and Layne, 15 months; his mother, Connie Reeves of Central City; a sister, Jennifer Lani of Fullerton, Neb.; a brother, Brian Francis of Palmer, Neb.; and grandfather Vaughn Francis of Fullerton and grandmother Jean Christensen of St. Paul.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Christian Church in Woodbine.

Sturgill, Kirk - death notice May 11, 2004

Published Wednesday
May 12, 2004

Iowa teen is killed in accident; four others injured

BY JEFFREY ROBB WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

The Boyer Valley boys track team scratched out of the rest of Tuesday's meet that Kirk Sturgill should have attended.

Sturgill, 15, was killed in an accident that involved two cars carrying five students from Boyer Valley High School, which is in Dunlap, Iowa.

Boyer Valley Superintendent Deb Johnson said Sturgill was supposed to be at the track invitational at the high school, but the boys apparently left before it started.

When word of Sturgill's death came in, she said, Boyer Valley athletes pulled out of the meet as students and the community gathered at the school to talk.

Details of the accident, which happened about 4 p.m. Tuesday on an isolated dirt road outside Dunlap, were sketchy.

Johnson said she believes the five students went out together. An Iowa State Patrol report says Sturgill was driving one of the cars, a 2001 Saturn.

After the accident, one of the students, senior Tim Murphy, ran two miles for help, Johnson said. Three students were transported from the scene by helicopter.

The four students who survived, Johnson said, were in stable condition.

Johnson said Sturgill was an awesome athlete who would have lettered in five sports: track, golf, basketball, football and baseball. He wanted to go out for cross country to bring that number to six.

"It was never his ego," Johnson said. "It was just to do it."

About 150 students met at the school, joined by staff, school board members, parents and local clergy. They stayed there until about 11:30 p.m.

School was in session Wednesday, but a crisis team of counselors was mobilized.

BY JEFFREY ROBB AND TODD VON KAMPEN WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITERS

The Boyer Valley High School boys track team pulled out of the rest of Tuesday's home meet, a meet that Kirk Sturgill should have attended.

Sturgill, 15, of Dunlap, Iowa, was killed in a two-car, head-on collision east of Dunlap on a hilly Shelby County road popular with youths wanting to jump the hills with their vehicles.

Four other boys who go to the Dunlap-based high school were injured, including the other driver, 17-year-old Douglas Nichols of Dunlap.

Nichols was in critical condition Wednesday at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Cody Malone, 15, of Dow City, Iowa, was hospitalized there in good condition.

Timothy Murphy, 18, and Michael Nemitz, 15, both of Dunlap, were released Wednesday from Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, said Ed Gast, the hospital administrator.

Authorities continued Wednesday to investigate the accident. It took place about 4 p.m. Tuesday on Aspen Avenue, a north-south dirt road three miles east of Dunlap and one mile east of the Harrison County-Shelby County line.

Boyer Valley Superintendent Deb Johnsen said Sturgill was supposed to be at the track invitational at the high school, but he and the four other boys apparently left before it started.

An Iowa State Patrol report said Sturgill was driving a 2001 Saturn, with Nemitz and Malone as passengers. Nichols was driving a 1987 Ford Ranger with Murphy inside.

Authorities learned later that Aspen Avenue has been popular for some time with young motorists looking for a thrill from jumping its hills, Shelby County Sheriff Gene Cavenaugh said.

They didn't know that before, he said, "probably (because) nobody's gotten hurt over there."

After reaching Aspen Avenue, the two vehicles headed for the same hill crest from opposite directions, the State Patrol said.

Nichols' northbound Ranger drove over the crest and collided with Sturgill's southbound Saturn, the patrol said.

Johnsen said Murphy, a senior, ran two miles to get help. A Dunlap police officer arrived first, followed by Shelby County sheriff's deputies and rescue squads from Earling, Dow City and Crawford County.

Rescue workers needed extrication equipment to pry open the vehicles, Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy Kelly Lefeber said.

Nichols and Malone were taken by helicopter to the Omaha hospital, and another helicopter flew Sturgill to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. He was pronounced dead there, spokeswoman Ann Boeke said.

Of the four injured youths, all but Nemitz were wearing seat belts, according to the State Patrol report. Investigators are unsure whether Sturgill was using a seat belt. No alcohol was found, Lefeber said.

Johnsen said Sturgill was an awesome athlete who would have lettered in five sports: track, golf, basketball, football and baseball. He wanted to go out for cross country to bring that number to six.

"It was never his ego," Johnsen said. "It was just to do it."

When word of Sturgill's death came Tuesday, she said, Boyer Valley athletes pulled out of the track meet.

About 150 students met at the school, joined by staff, school board members, parents and local clergy. They stayed there until about 11:30 p.m.

Classes were held Wednesday at Boyer Valley, but a crisis team of counselors was mobilized.

Kirk Allen Sturgill was born August 25, 1988, in Omaha, Nebraska to parents Dana and Susan (Kelley) Sturgill. He was baptized at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dunlap, Iowa. Kirk was a student at Boyer Valley High School in Dunlap. He loved sports and participated in baseball, football, basketball, track and golf. He loved to spend time with his friends.

Kirk died on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, as a result of an automobile accident reaching the age of 15 years, eight months, and 16 days.

Kirk was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother Doris Sturgill and his aunt Joyce Kelley. Those survivors left to cherish the loving memory of Kirk are his parents Dana and Susan of Dunlap, Iowa; two brothers Chris and Casey Sturgill of Dunlap, Iowa; maternal grandparents Johnny and Rita Kelley of Woodbine, Iowa; paternal grandfather Dennis Sturgill of Council Bluffs, Iowa; aunts and uncles Marvin Kelley and his wife Patty, Paul Kelley and his wife Tracy all of Woodbine, Iowa; Nancy and her husband Steve Hupp of Scranton, Iowa; Norma and her husband Martin Houston of Broomfield, Colorado, Cindy and her husband Jerry Stessman of Dunlap, Iowa and Sheila and her husband Bill Boner of Omaha,Nebraska;cousins; and other relatives and friends.

One cannot put into words exactly how great Kirk was. All you ever see are people saying "oh he would have lettered in five sports, blah blah blah." These people are not explaining the best part about Kirk. My father said it best when he said "you know I never was given the opportunity to have a son, but if i did i would want him just like kirk." how true was that? I was always there cheering Kirk on at his sporting events from watching him run the mile back at puppy relays to yelling "he's a freshman" while he was playing basketball this past year. What people are not getting across enough is just how special kirk was, his special attitude he had towards life. He was never too good to talk to anyone, and you would never see that boy without a smile on his face.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that while I was just as proud if not prouder than anybody else with Kirk's accomplishments athletically, I still think people should be more aware of how great of a guy he was in general. I know for one that my life has changed completely since he passed away and that not a single day goes by that I don't miss him. I firmly believe that Kirk is still with us today, I know he is always watching over me. And I can't wait for the day when I meet him once again in heaven and I am greeted with one of our special hugs. The hugs that caused Miss Weber to close the door due to my squealing when Kirk would spin me around. Kirk was an amazing athlete, but lets not forget that he was also an intelligent, caring, nice looking individual also.

Harlan woman killed in one-car crash Sunday

HARLAN - An 88-year-old rural Harlan woman died as the result of injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident Sunday evening.

She was a passenger in a car driven by Connie White, 60, of Omaha. Connie White was treated and released at Myrtue, the office said.

According to authorities, Connie White was heading north on Umbrella Road, one-half mile south of 700th Street, at about 7:30 p.m. when she lost control of the vehicle as it crested a hill. The car traveled into the west ditch, landing on its top, the office said.
