Earling woman dies, girl injured in crash

Rescue workers from Underwood, Neola and Council Bluffs extricate a 5-year-old girl from a vehicle involved in a collision on Railroad Avenue near Juniper Road Thursday afternoon.

WESTON - An Earling woman was killed and her 5-year-old daughter critically injured in a car crash just north of Weston late Thursday morning.

Shawna Jones, 32, of Earling was pronounced dead at the scene of the two-car collision near the intersection of Railroad Avenue, formerly Highway 191, and Juniper Road, just outside of Weston.

Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker said the collision occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. A 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Velda Wellman, 77, of Neola was traveling south on Railroad Avenue at the same time a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Jones was traveling north.

As the two cars approached each other, Jones' vehicle crossed the center line and collided head on with Wellman's car, Danker said. It is not yet known why Jones' car crossed the center line.

Jones was killed in the collision. Danker said she was pregnant and wearing a seat belt. An autopsy was scheduled this morning at the Douglas County Medical Examiner's Office.

Her daughter, Skye Jones, 5, was restrained in a car seat. She had to be extricated from the car.

Skye Jones was taken to Jennie Edmundson Hospital by a rescue unit and taken by helicopter ambulance from there to Creighton University Medical Center. She was listed in critical condition this morning.

Wellman and her husband, Frederick, who was a passenger in the Grand Marquis, were transported by rescue units to Jennie Edmundson Hospital. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

The crash is still under investigation.

Crash victim's condition upgraded

The condition of a five-year-old girl who was airlifted following a fatal accident Thursday afternoon has been upgraded, report hospital officials.

Skye Jones is hospitalized at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha in serious condition after being transported from Jennie Edmundson Hospital in critical condition.

Jones' mother, Shawna Jones, 32, of Earling was pronounced dead at the scene of a two-car collision near the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Juniper Road, outside of Weston.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Shawna's 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier was headed north on Railroad Avenue before colliding with a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by 77-year-old Velda Wellman of Neola.

According to officials with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office, it appears Jones' vehicle crossed the center line upon impact.

Jones was pregnant and wearing a seat belt, said Sheriff Jeff Danker.

Skye Jones was restrained in a car seat, and had to be extricated from the vehicle.

Officials at Jennie Edmundson said Velda remains in stable condition, while her husband, Frederick, a passenger in the Grand Marquis, is listed as being in the Intensive Care Unit.
