Benson, Kathleen - death notice Nov. 15, 2003

GREELEY, Colo. - Kathleen Benson, 50, of Greeley, Colo., formerly of Avoca, died of cancer Nov. 15.

She was born in Council Bluffs and graduated from Avoca High School in 1971. She graduated from Jennie Edmundson Hospital of Nursing in 1974. She was employed as a nurse at Children's Hospital in Omaha and later in various hospitals in Colorado.

She also lived in Cheyenne, Wyo., and was a resident of Colorado since 1978.

Survivors include her husband, Bob, of Greeley; one son, David Dixon of Ft. Collins, Colo.; one stepson, Richard Dixon of Cheyenne; her parents, Roger and Joan Reineke of Avoca; one brother, Bob Reineke and wife, Donna, of Treynor; her grandmother, Lillie Reineke of Avoca; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Hancock with the Rev. Dr. Judy Flanegin officiating.

Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca is in charge of arrangements.

She married Grifford Booth on 4-15-1940. The couple lived in Omaha. Arlene retired from the Med Center in 1983, after working 27 years at NPI. An avid bowler she was a member of the 600 Club. Carter, Dena Ann - death notice Oct. 27, 2003

DENISON - Dena Ann Carter, 16, of Irwin was pronounced dead at the scene of a two-vehicle collision late Monday night, the Crawford County Sheriff's Department said.

Seriously injured were James Finch, 58, of Ocala, Fla., and Timothy Squires, 39, of Belleview, Fla. Both were transported to Crawford County Hospital by the Crawford County Rescue Department, the sheriff's report indicated.

According to the report, Carter was traveling northbound on Highway 59, six miles south of Denison at 11 p.m. when her vehicle crossed the center line and struck the car driven by Finch, which was heading south.

Officials said Carter was thrown from the vehicle. Finch's car landed in the ditch.

Irwin teen killed in accident

DENISON -- A 16-year-old Irwin girl was killed Monday when the car she was driving struck a semi-tractor trailer on U.S. Highway 59 six miles south of Denison.


Dena Carter, the daughter of Michel and Carol Carter, Irwin, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Iowa State Patrol reports, Carter was driving her 1994 Buick Regal northbound on U.S. Highway 59 about 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27 when it crossed the center line and struck a 2004 Freightliner driven by James Finch, 58, Ocala, Fla.


Reports said Carter was ejected from the vehicle, which came to rest on the east shoulder, facing south. The semi came to rest in the west ditch.


Finch was taken to Crawford County Hospital with head injuries, where he was treated and released. A passenger in the Finch semi, Timothy Squires, 39, Belleview, Fla., was also taken to Crawford County Hospital with head injuries. He also was treated and released.

Services
Services for Carter were held Thursday, Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery.


Besides her parents, Carter is survived by her sister, Leah, of Cedar Falls; brother, Ryan, of Irwin; maternal grandparents Arthur and Marlene Klingenborg of Cedar Falls; paternal grandparents Virgil and Ruby Carter of Irwin; and her maternal great-grandmother, Myrtle Gearhart, of Harlan.


Carter was a sophomore at IKM High School in Manilla.


She was very active in school.


She was awarded the IKM Presidential Academic Achievement Award, and participated in volleyball, track and softball, as well as the Catholic Youth Organization.


Her interests included gymnastics, water sports, music, playing the piano, stock car and four-wheeler races, playing on the computer and spending time with friends and family.


Family and friends say her most memorable quality was her shining smile.

Eckrich, Donald J. - death notice Dec. 1, 2003

Funeral Mass for Donald J. Eckrich, 78, of Council Bluffs will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Church with the Rev. Chuck Kottas officiating.

Mr. Eckrich died Dec. 1 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital of a heart attack.

He was born Jan. 4, 1925, in Neola to Paul and Edna (Henderson) Eckrich Sr. He moved to Council Bluffs in 1937. He was a 1942 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. He was driver/warehouseman for National Biscuit Co. (Nabisco) for 44 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Riddle) Eckrich; daughter, Suzanne Kirk, and husband, Gary, of Omaha; son, Jerry Eckrich, and wife, Barb, of Decatur, Ill.; sisters, Bernice Young and husband, Eugene, of Council Bluffs, Dorothy Setzer of Lindenhurst, Ill., Bea Hamling of Council Bluffs; brother, Paul F. Eckrich Jr., and wife, Peg, of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.; three grandchildren: Brett and Alexis Eckrich and Andrew Kirk.

Rosary recitation will be tonight at 7 followed by visitation until 8 at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Chapel. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery with a luncheon following at St. Peter's Social Hall.

Memorials may be offered to St. Peter's Church or a charity of donor's choice.

The funeral for JoAnn Edmondson, 72, of Bella Vista, Ark., formerly of Irwin, were held today (Nov. 6) at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Irwin.

Mrs. Edmondson died Nov. 3 in Council Bluffs.

Donald Herman Ehlers, 81, of Minden died Oct. 8 at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.

He was born in the Minden rural area. He graduated in 1939 from high school in Minden and then attended college for one year. He served in the military during World War II. He was a farmer for many years until retirement. He was a member of Minden United Church of Christ.

Mr. Ehlers and his wife, Madeline, were married 57 years.

Survivors in addition to his wife include his son, Larry Ehlers, and wife, Dianne, of Persia; daughters, Donna Jahn of Springfield, Mo., Peg McCool and husband, Eugene, of Shelby, LaRee See and husband, Randy, of Harrison, Ariz., Sandra Schnoor and husband, Ronald, of Manilla and Jan Evans of Shelby; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

There will be no special family visitation. Open to the public viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Pauley Knutson Funeral Home in Avoca. The funeral will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Minden United Church of Christ in Minden with the Rev. Denny Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Minden Cemetery.

Leonard Steven Hoffmann, the son of Frederick and Susanna Wingert Hoffmann, was born December 24, 1915, on a farm near Panama. He was baptized, received his First Holy Communion and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Panama. He attended rural school and St. Mary's Catholic School.

On November 19, 1940, he married Dorothy Ann Schumacher of Defiance. Nine children were born to this union. After their marriage, they lived in the Panama-Earling area for fifteen years before they moved to a farm west of Dunlap, where they resided for 40 years. In August of 1996, they moved into Dunlap.

Leonard was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He enjoyed farming and was interested in antique engines, cars and tractors.

Leonard died on Monday, November 24, 2003 at his home in Dunlap at the age of 87 years and 11 months.

Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers, Matthew, Art, Herbert and Henry and five sisters, Ann Thelen, Mary Taggart, Eleanor Honz, Hilda Blum and Sedona Honz.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Ann Hoffmann of Dunlap; his nine children, Joyce and Tom Esser of Ute, Jan Raymond of Las Vegas, Nev., Len and Kathy Hoffmann of Grand Junction, Colo., Lorrie Hursey of Westerville, Ohio, Doris Heston of Louisville, Ky., Ray and Vera Hoffmann of Greeley, Colo., Rita and Allen Purkapile of Bennington, Neb., Cathy and Sam Simpson of Sperry and Elaine and Tom McCord of Bennington, Neb.; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday morning, Nov. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Dunlap. Celebrants were Rev. Larry Hoffmann and Rev. Paul Strittmatter. Accompanist was Fran Klein and vocalists were St. Patrick's Choir. Soloist was Lisa Simpson Kemp.

Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap. Pallbearers were Richard Esser, Roger Esser, Nick Hoffmann, Troy Hopp, Todd Hursey, Jake McCord, Tom McCord, Brent Kelm. Fouts Funeral Home of Dunlap was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kain died Dec. 1 at home.

She was born April 18, 1905, in Harlan to Jens and Magdalene (Larsen) Pedersen. She moved to Council Bluffs in 1917. She attended Abraham Lincoln High School and Boyles Business College. She did office work for the Visiting Nurse Association, then raised her six children, and then was a ward clerk at Jennie Edmundson Hospital for many years, retiring in 1974. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and its Faith Circle.

Mrs. Kain was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Kain, on Dec. 14, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Esther, Carrie, Anna, Sarah and Lillian.

Survivors include four daughters, Carol Kain, Kay Driver and husband, Robert, Joanne Swanger and husband, Jerry, all of Council Bluffs, and Marilyn Pikquet and husband, Myron, of Idaha Falls, Idaho; sons, Lynn Kain and wife, Phyllis, of Crescent and Dennis Kain of Council Bluffs; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Lahr, Viola Catherine (Frank) - obit 1928 - 2003

Viola Catherine (Frank) Lahr was born July 8, 1928 in Earling to parents, Tony and Barbara (Bissen) Frank. In 1946 she graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in Earling.

On January 28, 1948, she married Lyle Lahr. The couple lived in various places including Oregon and Cheyenne, Wyo., before settling in Dunlap in the early 1970's.

Vi had worked as a waitress at the Larson Cafe and the Dairy Sweet in Dunlap for many years. She was currently assistant manager at the Senior Citizens Center in Dunlap. Lyle died on November 30, 1985.

Vi was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap. She enjoyed the Senior Citizen Center, especially playing cards and visiting with friends. She loved to travel with her friend John Schwab. She also loved her flower garden, picking raspberries, gathering walnuts and picking the walnut meat out in the winter and sharing it with friends and family.

Vi died Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 75 years, 3 months and 7 days.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Lyle; brother, Ernie Frank and sister, Joanne Lefeber.

She is survived by her children, Butch Laverne Lahr and wife Noel of Dow City, Jacquelyne Grace and husband Jim Schaben of Denison, Lane Michael Lahr and Beth Case of Kissimmee, Fla., Larry Dean Lahr and wife Patty of Carroll; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Owen Frank and Jim Frank, both of Omaha, Neb., and Francis Frank and wife Marie of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Ella Schwarte of Harlan and Jeanie and husband Joe Sandbothe of Council Bluffs; brother-in-law, Gene Lefeber of Earling; special friends, John Schwab and Joey Garrett both of Dunlap and many other relatives and friends.

She was born in Denison. She graduated from Denison High School in 1938. She operated LaSourd Grocery in Portsmouth from 1945-1979.

Mrs. LaSourd was preceded in death by her husband, Lauren, in 1981. They were married 39 years. She was also preceded in death by daughter, Debra LaSourd; and brother, George Higgins.

Dennis C. Lefeber, 44, of Omaha died Oct. 22 at Myrtue Hospital in Harlan after suffering a heart attack at his brother's home.

He was born June 29, 1959, in Harlan to Ernest and Shirley (Miller) Lefeber. He moved to Omaha 20 years ago. He was a laborer at Campbell South in Omaha for 10 years. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan.

Autopsy ordered in man's death

SHELBY COUNTY - An autopsy has been ordered in the death of a Walnut man, who authorities say appears to have fallen from a deer stand on Wednesday.

The Shelby Country Sheriff's Department reports the body of Dale Lynch, 63, was found at 8:49 p.m. in Fairview Township, a mile into Shelby County. Avoca Fire Chief Scott Pigsley also responded.

Authorities say the exact cause of death is not yet known and the investigation continues.

Virgil H. Schmitz, 86, formerly of Neola for the past 28 years, died Oct. 31 at Risen Son Christian Village.

He was born July 14, 1917, in Westphalia to Henry and Marie Schmitz.

He served with the Army during World War II, and worked in the sales department of Nebraska Furniture Mart.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Neola, and the Knights of Columbus.

He was proceeded in death by his wife of 47 years, Mary G., on Oct. 6, 2000.

He is survived by three sisters, Laura Schmitz of Marshfield, Wis., Alice Kwapiszeski of Panama, and Naomi Gross of Harlan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A rosary recitation will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church.

Mass of Christian burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at St. Patricks Cemetery, with a luncheon to follow at the church hall.

Memorials may be offered to the church.

MISSOURI VALLEY - Veronica Wehr White, 94, died Dec. 25 at Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley.


She was born Dec. 19, 1909, in Portsmouth to John E. and Henrietta (Baxter) Wehr. She was raised in the Portsmouth area and graduated from St. Mary's High School in May of 1928.
She married Leo C. White on Nov. 28, 1928.


Mrs. White worked for the telephone company in Portsmouth, sold Avon, worked at Schwartz Printing in Omaha, as a waitress and trained girls at Job Corps from where she retired.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, on March 5, 1971. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Paul, Vincent, Ambrose and John; four sisters, Irene, Henrietta, Mary and Claryce; three grandchildren and one great grandson.


She is survived by three daughters, Donna Wendt and husband, James, of Missouri Valley, Patricia Dettmer of Las Vegas, Mary Ann Kups and husband, Kenneth, of Marshalltown; two sons, Neil White of Alexandra, La. and Dennis White and wife, Loretta, of Hayden, Idaho; a sister, Viola Harvey of Winchester, Ore.; 43 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.

Services will be held Friday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at Community of Christ Church in Persia with burial in the Valley View Cemetery in Persia.


Wolf is survived by his wife, Diana, of Persia; daughters Joell Onstad of Harlan and Janelle (Michael) Kurtzuba of Persia; grandchildren Jessica Onstad of Harlan, and Brandy, Melony and Nicohole Kurtzuba, all of Persia; sister Teresa (Jerome) Drahelm and brother Kenneth (Jean) Wolf, all of Zimmerman, Mn.

Yechout, 85, Omaha, died Oct. 28, 2003.

OMAHA -- Marie D. (Luetticke) Yechout, 85, Omaha, died Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Bergan Mercy Medical Center.


Services will be held Friday, Oct. 31 at 11:15 a.m. at St. Cecilia Cathedral with burial in the Calvary Cemetery.


A wake service was held Thursday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at West Center Chapel.


Yechout is a former Westphalia area resident. She is survived by daughters Mary Ann (Ron) Mumm of Omaha, Patsy (Jim) Mischo of Omaha and Janet (Bob) Grabau of Omaha; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brothers Leo Luetticke of Chillicothe, Mo. and Elmer Luetticke of Lyons, Co.; nieces and nephews.
