She was born in Wareham, Neb.
Mrs. Albers was preceded in death by her husband, Ora, in 1965. They were
married 34 years.
Survivors include daughters, Venita Grap of Persia and Janis Schutt of Council
Bluffs; daughter-in-law, Lois Albers of Persia and Monika Albers of Harlan; 11
grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Pauley Knutson Chapel in Persia.
The funeral will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Persia Methodist Church with the
Rev. Ed Frank officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery.

She was born in Oakland. She previously lived in Avoca, Oakland and

Mrs. Grote died June 14 at Risen Son.
She was born Oct. 10, 1906, in Massena to John H. and Martha Waters Talty. She
lived in Neola since 1911. She was a former teacher and homemaker. She was a
member of St. Patrick's Church in Neola and its Altar & Rosary Society. She was
past treasurer of Catholic Daughters of America, past meal site manager for
Senior Citizens, past 4-H Club member, and she was instrumental in bringing the
first public health nurses to West Pottawattamie County. She was past secretary
and treasurer for Senior Citizens when it started in Neola.
Mrs. Grote was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1978. They were
married 50 years.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph of Neola and John H. "Jack" and wife, Mary,
of Sioux City; foster daughter, Gloria Jacobson, and husband, Ethan, of
Lakewood, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; two foster grandchildren; 29
great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Wake service will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. followed by visitation at St. Patrick's
Church in Neola. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery with a luncheon to

Fred J. Hadfield, 93, of Indian Hills Nursing Center died
June 24 at the nursing home.
He was born July 4, 1909, in Neola to Joseph and Martha (Dewey) Hadfield. He
lived in Neola for 80 years and Minden for 13 years, moving to Indian Hills in
October 2002. He was a farmer his entire life, retiring in 1980. He was a member
of First Presbyterian Church of Neola.
Mr. Hadfield was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, on Dec. 7, 2002.

Honaker, Pearl E. (Pedersen) Mahlberg - obit 1926 - 2003
Pearl E. Mahlberg Honaker
Pearl was born on January 25, 1926 to parents John and Edith (Kessler) Pedersen
in Dunlap. She attended country school at Willow #8. On January 6, 1947 she
married Delmar Mahlberg at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap. The couple
farmed in Willow township west of Dunlap. To this union nine children were born.
Delmar died on February 10, 1964. Pearl stayed on the farm raising their nine
children.
On March 21, 1976, she married Richard (Dean) Honaker at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church. The couple moved to Tumbling Shoals, Ark. While there she worked as a
nurse's aide. In 1989 Pearl and Dean moved to Neola. In 1999 they moved to
Harlan. Pearl was on hemodialysis for 17 years.
She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, playing cards and writing letters.
Pearl died Monday, April 14, 2003 at her home in Harlan at the age of 77 years,
two months and 20 days.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Delmar Mahlberg; two
grandchildren, Matt Evers and Doug Wessel; son-in-law, Clint Evers; sister,
Mildred Melby; brother, Johnny Pedersen and step-son, Darrell Honaker.
She is survived by her husband, Dean Honaker of Harlan; nine children, Paul
Mahlberg of Milledgeville, Ga., Patricia and Steve Wessel of Mapleton, Donna and
Don McCracken of Denver, Colo., David Mahlberg and Sandi of Dunlap, Judy and
Rick Blume of Ute, Bob Mahlberg and Sharon of Soldier, Raymond Mahlberg and
Carmen of San Diego, Calif., Barbara and Warren Jensen of Soldier and Rodney
Mahlberg and Jodi of Lincoln, Neb.; step-son, Leonard Honaker and Karen of Black
River Falls, Wis.; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers,
Leslie Pedersen and Velma of Denison and Charles Pedersen and Joanne of Des
Moines; two sisters, Rose Johnson and Wally Stern and Lillian Pedersen both of
Prophetstown, Ill. She is also survived by numerous relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, April 17, 2003, at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church in Dunlap. Rev. Paul Strittmatter and Rev. Jack McClure
officiated the 10 a.m. service. Music was provided by Marilyn Grote and Jerry
Baldwin.
Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap. Honorary casket bearers
were Candice Mahlberg, Lindy Mahlberg, Jackie Wessel, Ana Mahlberg, Cindy
Mahlberg, Josie Mahlberg, Meckensie Jensen. Casket bearers were Nick Mahlberg,
Mike Evers, Brandon Blume, Garred Blume, Caine Mahlberg, Jamie Mahlberg, Shannon
Mahlberg, David Mahlberg, Tony Mahlberg, Chris Jensen, Nate Jensen, Cole
Mahlberg, Cade Mahlberg, Henry Mahlberg. Fouts Funeral Home of Dunlap was in
charge of arrangements.

DUNLAP - Funeral Mass for Richard Dean Honaker, 88, of
Harlan, formerly of Dunlap, will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church in Dunlap.
Mr. Honaker died June 8 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl, on April 14. Survivors include his
son, Leonard Honaker, and wife, Karen, of Black River Falls, Wis.
Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap.
Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap.

Mass of Christian Burial for Richard Dean Honaker of Harlan
was held Thursday morning, June 12, 2003 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in
Dunlap. Father Paul Strittmatter officiated at the 10 a.m. service. Music was
provided by Fran Klein and Rick Rannells.
Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap. Pallbearers were Mike
Honaker, John Heller, Mike Evers, Nathan Jensen, Chris Jensen, Tony Mahlberg.
Honorary bearers were members of the Dunlap Fire and Rescue. Fouts Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements.
Dean was born on June 23, 1914 to parents, James and Harriet (Burnett) Honaker
in Woodbine. In 1932, Dean married Marie Leone Weber in Dunlap. Dean operated a
gas station in Dunlap and then drove a gravel truck. He had been on the Dunlap
Fire Department and was the fire chief for a number of years. Marie died on
December 29, 1972.
On March 21, 1976, Dean married Pearl Honaker at St. Patrick's Catholic Church
in Dunlap. The couple moved to Tumbling Shoals, Ark. Dean and Pearl returned to
Neola in 1989. The couple moved to Harlan in 1999. Pearl died April 12, 2003.
Dean died Sunday, June 8, 2003 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan at the age
of 88 years, eleven months and sixteen days.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, son, Darrell Honaker, two
brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his son, Leonard Honaker and wife Karen of Black River Falls,
Wis.; 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and
friends.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Word has been received of the death of James "Jamey" I. Moody
IV, 22, Washington, DC, who died June 9 as a result of injuries sustained in an
accident in Washington, DC.
Jamey is the son of Lyn and Alan Kelly of Harlan, and James I. Moody III of
Graham, Texas. He was a student at Harlan Community High School, and graduated
in 1998 from Graham High School in Graham, Texas.
He is survived by aunts and uncles who all live in Texas.

Memorial Mass for Alvin N. Ohlinger, 61, of Council Bluffs will be May 10 at 11

Mr. Ohlinger died April 29. He was born in Panama. He worked for Snoco for many
years. He also did lawn service and was an auctioneer.
Mr. Ohlinger was preceded in death by his father, Jake Ohlinger; brother, Clete

HARLAN - Mrs. Laurina Helen Schmitz, 87, formerly of 2004
Garfield No. 222, died June 12 at her residence.
She was born in Westphalia and graduated from St. Boniface High School in 1934.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan, St. Mary's Church
in Panama and St. Mary's Church in Portsmouth from 1977-79.
She served as Golden Pioneer chairperson from 1979 to 1981; Shelby County
Chairperson on Aging, Council Bluffs region; Shelby County Board of Public
Health; and had articles published by the Catholic Diocesan paper.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Joseph Nicholas Schmitz,
who died in 1994.
She is survived by five daughters, Marleen Nabity of Stockton, Mo., Kathleen
(Orville) Leinen of Panora, Elizabeth "Betty" Anderson of Lincoln, Neb.,
Marietta (Albert) Bellingtier of Fort Dodge, and Therese (Michael) Ratigan of
Council Bluffs; two sons, Robert (Susan) Schmitz of Panama, and Michael
(Barbara) Schmitz of Defiance; two sisters, Marie Nufrio of Fountain City, Ind.,
and Bernadine Ausmann of Phoenix; a brother, Bernard (Barbara) Stracke of

Mrs. Sorey died May 7 at home.
She was born July 1, 1922, to Edward Luther and May Ola (Fry) Condron in
Woodbine. She and her husband farmed southeast of Woodbine. She was a member of
the Woodbine Saddle Club. Mrs. Sorey was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband, Ralph, on May 2, 1991. [They were married July 1, 1939, in Denison] and
3 sisters, Caroline (Condron) Sorey, Lois (Condron) Christensen and Marie
(Condron) Sorey.

High School. He served in the military during World War II from 1944-1945. He
was a painter for more than 50 years. He was the oldest member of Local WWII
Last Man's Club. He was a member of Avoca Legion, Avoca Veterans of Foreign Wars
and Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mr. Wendt was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, in 1996.
Survivors include son, Ronald, and wife, Ann, of Omaha; daughters, Janice Tooley
and husband, James, of Walnut and Barbara Piittmann and husband, Marvin, of
Avoca; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Pauley Knutson Funeral Home in
Avoca. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Avoca following the service.

Williams, 77, Woodbine, died May 18, 2003.
WOODBINE -- Russell C. Williams, 77, Woodbine, died May 18 at his home. Services
were held Saturday, May 24 at 2 p.m. at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine with
burial in the Woodbine Cemetery.
Williams is formerly of the Portsmouth area. He is survived by his three
children -- Roger (Nancy) of Gering, Neb., Craig (Linda) of Woodbine and Sherrie
(Patrick) Miller of Carroll; sister Mae Mikels of Woodbine; brother Laverne
(Darlene) of Woodbine; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Russell Clyde Williams was born September 11, 1925 to
parents Clyde and Tena (Clementine) Williams near Portsmouth. He grew up in the
Portsmouth area and attended country school there. On September 30, 1944,
Russell married Betty Lyons in Harlan. Russell entered the United States Army
June 5, 1945, and was stationed at Fort Knox, Ky., until his honorable discharge
August 31, 1946. He was a tank instructor. Upon returning home, the couple
farmed northeast of Portsmouth, then near Avoca, and finally near Woodbine. They
purchased their farm in 1964. One of Russell's jobs was driving the school bus.
He did this for over 20 years and greeted many children with a friendly smile
and a wave. He also worked at the Dunlap Livestock Auction and Nixon Feeds in
Omaha, Neb.
Russell was baptized at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Logan. Russell was a
charter member of the Woodbine Saddle Club and a member of the American Legion
Weiss Post. He raised and bred quarter horses and charolais cattle. He had a
real love for horses and livestock.
Russell died at his home on Sunday, May 18, 2003, reaching the age of 77 years,
eight months, and seven days.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; and daughter,
Shelley.
He is survived by his three children, Roger Williams and his wife Nancy of
Gering, Neb., Craig Williams and his wife Linda of Woodbine, Sherrie and her
husband Patrick Miller of Carroll; sister, Mae Mikels of Woodbine; brother,
LaVerne Williams and his wife Darlene of Woodbine; seven grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Services were held at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine Saturday, May 24, 2003 at 2
p.m. with Rev. Mark Sikes officiating. Vocalists were Rick and Pat Williams who
sang "Amazing Grace." Recorded selections were "Grandpa" and "Happy Trails."
Interment was made at the Woodbine Cemetery. Military services were provided by
American Legion Weiss Post #143. Pallbearers were Brian Williams, Justin
Williams, Aaron Williams, Jarrod Williams, Matthew Williams, Chad Williams.

Wilwerding, stillborn, were held Thursday, May 15 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Our
Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth, with the Rev. Paul Bianchi officiating.
Samuel is survived by his parents, Paul and Desiri Wilwerding, of Portsmouth;
brother Eli Wilwerding at home; grandparents Bernie (Mary) Wilwerding of Earling
and Jim (Lois) Crawford of Portsmouth; and great-grandparents Bob (Virginia)
Reinig of Portsmouth.
Burial was held at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Earling.
