Andersen is survived by his wife, Talena, of Harlan; sons Arthur C. (Linda)
Andersen of Tulsa, Okla. and Roger (Laurie) Andersen of Atlantic; daughter Linda
(Kenneth) Woltmann of Avoca; brother Charles (Marcella) Andersen of Harlan;
sisters Arlene (Darwin) Warner of Harlan and Marilyn (Jack) Miles of St. Louis,

HARLAN - Funeral for Eileen Mary Andersen, 59, of Persia will be 2 p.m. Monday
at Pauley Funeral Home with the Rev. Emil Belsky officiating.
Mrs. Andersen died Sept. 25, at Mercy Hospital.
Born in Mitchell, S.D., she was a former bank teller in Persia and a dietary
specialist for the Elm Crest Retirement Community. She formerly lived in
Wessington, S.D. and Lodi, Calif.
She and her husband, Michael, had been married for 10 years.
Survivors in addition to her husband include her mother, Genevieve Petrosky, of
Portland, Ore., four sisters, Margaret Fox, of Livingston, Mont., Myrna Holden,
of Live Oak, Calif., Barbra Travalent, of Medford, Ore., and Mary Kay Howard, of
Portland, Ore.; a brother, Randy Petrosky and wife, Jena, of Raleigh, N.C.; a
stepdaughter, Jill Andersen, of Perry; three stepsons, Andrew and John Andersen,
both of Persia, and Chris Andersen, of Audubon.
Distribution of cremains will be at Crow Lake Cemetery in Wessington Springs,
S.D.

WESTPHALIA - Marie Josephine Blum was born to Anna (Schwarte) and Benedict Blum
June 27, 1916, on a farm near Westphalia, one of 14 children in the family. She
was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church and received her
education at St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia. She lived and worked on
the family farm until moving to Westphalia with her mother in 1949. She then was
employed as housekeeper and childcare provider for various families in the
Westphalia area. Employed by Msgr. Schwarte as his housekeeper while he was
assigned to Portsmouth, she later cleaned for him in Council Bluffs and Earling.
When Msgr. Schwarte left Earling, she remained as the priest's housekeeper for
eight years. In 1983, she returned to her home in Westphalia where she resided
until 1995, when she moved to Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan. She was
a lifelong member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, and was a
member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court of St. Katherine No. 266 of
Earling. She created candles for baptisms and weddings. Marie taught others the
art of candle making. On Aug. 20, 2002, she died at Elm Crest Retirement
Community at age 86 years, one month and 24 days.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Frank,
Herman, Brother George and William Blum and sisters, Kate Schiltz, Sister
Hermanita Blum FSPA, Antionette Kenkel, Sister Georgianna Blum FSPA, Corrine
Bissen, Anna Blum, Sister Rose Blum FSPA and Sister Marie Ann Blum FSPA. She is
survived by her brother Vincent Blum (Mary Ann) of Harlan; nieces and nephews
and other relatives.
A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated Aug. 24, 2002 at St. Boniface
Catholic Church in Westphalia, with the Rev. Michael G. Peters celebrant and the
Rev. Ben Kenkel concelebrant. Burial was in the St. Boniface Cemetery in
Westphalia, with Ben Blum, Phil Trierweiler, Gene Blum, Ralph Blum, Joe Ray
Kenkel, Jerome Blum and Gerald Blum casket bearers. Pauley Funeral Home in

WOODBINE - The funeral for Henrietta (Navrude) Harms, 91, of Woodbine, formerly
of Onawa, will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine.
Mrs. Harms died Aug. 25 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital.
She was born Sept. 24, 1910, near Soldier to Albert and Martha (Meseck) STOLL.
She attended country school in the Soldier area. She worked on the farm with her
parents. She farmed with her husband near Solider and in 1941 moved to a farm
West of Dunlap. Later she moved to California before returning to the Onawa
area.
Mrs. Harms was preceded in death by her first husband, Sigurd Navrude, on March
19, 1953, her second husband, Guy Rohrer, and her third husband, Levi Harms, on
March 15, 1988. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Harlan.
Survivors include one daughter, Marlene Agosta, and husband, Chuck, of Omaha;
four sons, Harold Navrude and wife, Shirley, of Woodbine, Norman Navrude of
California, Delbert Navrude and wife, Lois, of Woodbine and Harry Navrude and
wife, Jane, of Blair, Neb.; one sister, Esther Moltsau, of Onawa; eight
grandchildren; eight great grandchildren.
Visitation with the family will be tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Jordan Cemetery in rural Castana.

HARLAN - The funeral for Phillip David Kenney, 77, of Portsmouth will be
Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in
Portsmouth with the Rev. Paul Bianchi officiating.
Mr. Kenney died July 20 at St. Luke's Hospice Center in Denver.
He was born in Missouri Valley. He served in the U.S. Army Airforce during World
War II from June 8, 1943, to Feb. 15, 1946. He was a postal clerk for 28 years
with the U.S. Post Office, retiring 22 years ago. He was a member of St. Mary
Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, John Ohlinger Post No. 547 of Portsmouth and
Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Kenney and his wife, Anna, were married 54 years.
Survivors in addition to his wife include five sons, Patrick of Los Lunas, N.M.,
Michael of Longmont, Colo., Timothy and wife, Patty, of Boulder, Colo., Donald
of Littleton, Colo., and James of Riverton, Wyo.; one brother, Donald J., of Sun
City, Calif.; three grandchildren.
Rosary service will be tonight at 7 followed by family visitation until 9 at St.
Mary's Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Burial will be in Grange Cemetery in
Honey Creek. Pauley Funeral Home in Harlan is in charge of arrangements.

HARLAN - Frederick Joseph Kwapiszeski, son of Fred W. and Caecilia (Fromm)
Kwapiszeski, was born on a farm near Panama, May 10, 1918. He was baptized,
received his first Holy Communion and was confirmed at St. Mary of the
Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. He was raised on the family farm and
attended St. Mary's Catholic School graduating with the Class of 1936.
On March 31, 1951, he married Marcella Cooney at St. Francis Xavier Church in
Mayetta, KS. Together they raised four children, James, Robert and twins, Mark
and Carmela. After their marriage, they farmed south of Portsmouth for 48 plus
years. He retired from farming in 1981, but remained very active in St. Mary's
Parish in Portsmouth, especially during the picnics providing train rides for
children and donating homemade wine for the auctions. In 2000, Fred and Marcella
moved to Harlan where they became members of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Due
to his poor health, Fred became a resident of the Elm Crest Retirement Community
in April of 2002. He died Aug. 31, 2002 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital at age 84
years, three months and 21 days.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
infant sister, Ethel Kwapiszeski. He is survived by his wife, Marcella
Kwapiszeski of Harlan; his children, James Kwapiszeski of Temeculah, CA; Robert
Kwapiszeski of Omaha, NE; Mary Kay of Houston, TX and Carmella (Dan) Jacobsen of
Carroll; five grandchildren, Angie (Marty) Stein; Tina (Tim) Gorham; Keith,
Madelyn and Olivia Kay; five great grandchildren, Matthew and Hannah Stein and
Alaina, Aleisha and Andria Gorhan; his brothers and sisters, Helen (Ray)
Rennemeyer of Highlands Ranch, CO; Edna (William) Henderson of Denver, CO; Dr.

PANAMA-Bernadine "Bernie" Leuschen was born to Gertrude (Nollen) and Michael
Blum July 17, 1924, at a farm near Panama. She was baptized and confirmed at St.
Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade
School and High School graduating with the Class of 1942.
Jan. 9, 1945, she married Donald L. Leuschen at St. Mary of the Assumption. To
this union seven children were born. Bernie was a lifetime member of St. Mary of
the Assumption serving as past president of the Rosary Society. She also was a
member of St. Mary's Sewing Circle. She died Sept. 5, 2002, at Creighton
University Medical Center in Omaha, NE, at age 78 years, one month and 19 days.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert, Dec.
2, 1947, and sisters, Helen Sternberg and Mildred Chamberlain. She is survived
by her husband, Donald Leuschen of Panama; children, Shirley (Ed) Arkfeld of
Omaha, NE; Kate (Jim) Musich of Bedford; Jan (Bob) Wilson of Omaha, NE; Jean
(Wayne) Hodapp of Denver, CO; Doug Leuschen of Omaha, NE; and Beth (Hank) Stueve

Paulk was a long-time Harlan businessman, having owned the landmark Paulk and
Finn retail clothing store in Harlan.
He was a member of the Harlan School Board, the city forestry board and helped
with numerous community functions. Paulk was an avid tennis player and promoter
of community parks and courts, and he had an independent certified appraisal
service.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Eleanor (Warren) Hansen of San Luis Obispo,
Calif.; sons Dr. Stephen C. (Amy) Paulk of Portage, Wi. and Dr. Douglas G.
(Heidi) Paulk of Mt. Clemens, Mi.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

HARLAN - Graveside services for Robert Joseph Powers, 68, of Avinger, Texas,
will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Cemetery in Portsmouth with the Rev.

Mr. Powers died Aug. 20 at Myrtue Memorial Hopsital in Harlan.
He was born in Portsmouth. He graduated in 1952 from Logan High School. He was a
contract painter and truck driver.
Survivors include his companion, Connie Witt, of Portsmouth; one daughter,
Kimberly Coleman, and husband, Ernie, of Avinger; five sons, Richard of Daggett,
Calif., Robert of Carter Lake, Ronald Sr. and wife, Debbie, of Omaha, Harold and
wife, Colleen, of Sidney, Neb., and Dean and wife, Eileen,
of Templeton, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Linda Kay Brandt, and husband, Rick, of

ATHENS, Al. -- Word has been received of the death of Royce Reynolds, 72,
Athens, Al., who died Sept. 29 in Athens of acute Malaria.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 4 in Athens at the Hobbs Street Church
of Christ. Reynolds served the Harlan and Redline Churches of Christ for
approximately 15 years, and also owned Zekan and Robbins Photography in Harlan.
He and his wife had been serving as missionaries in Ghana in Africa when he
became ill.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy; and five children -- Paul, Rick, Basil

CORRECTIONVILLE - Ashley Jordan Shropshire-Duncan was born May 24, 1995, in
Norfolk, NE, the daughter of Sharleen Duncan and Charles Shropshire IV. Ashley
was entering 2nd grade at River Valley Elementary School in Washta. She loved
playing with her sister and brothers, cousins and all her school friends. She
loved kittens, swimming, volleyball, playing house and driving tractors. She
died Sept. 17, 2002, near Moville, at age 7.
She was preceded in death by her uncle, Cory Shropshire. She is survived by her
mother, Sharleen Duncan and stepfather, Bruce of Correctionville; her father,
Charles Shropshire, and stepmother, Darcy of Harlan; her sister, Brittny, and
brother, Christian of Correctionville; half-brother, Cougan and stepbrother,

COUNCIL BLUFFS - Norbert S. (Nub) Stracke was born in Westphalia May 18, 1929,
to Henry and Mary (Coenen). He graduated from St. Boniface High School in 1946.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-53. He was a sergeant on the Council Bluffs
Police Departments and was an officer for 27 years, retiring May 13, 1986 with
the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the Queen of the Apostles Catholic
Church and the Knights of Columbus No. 10805, American Legion Post No. 2, Eagles
Club, American-Italian Heritage and umpired and refereed for more than 40 years.
He had also served on the Parks and Recreation Commission.
He and his wife, Therese (Wehr), were married for 51 years. He died Aug. 22,
2002, at age 74 years at Alegent Health Bergan Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs.
Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Nancy K. Darigol (Gary)
of Selah, WA and Mary J. Digilio (John) of Omaha; three sisters, Laurina Schmitz
of Harlan; Bernadine Ausman (Lee) of Phoenix, AZ; and Marie Nufrio of Fountain
City, IN; a brother, Bernard (Barbara) of Defiance; 11 grandchildren; 16 great
grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church Aug. 26,
2002, with the Rev. Dan Kirby officiating. Burial with military rites by
American Legion Post No. 2 were at St. Joseph Cemetery.

EARLING - Viatora Josephine Schleis was one of identical twin daughters born to
John Schleis and Gertrude Bolster July 31, 1915, in Mapleton.
She married Raymond J. Wingert at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling, Oct.
4, 1939, and to this union six children were born. Viatora was a member of St.
Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church Altar Society and Sewing Circle, the
American Legion Auxiliary, Golden Age Club and Catholic Daughters of the
Americas Court St. Katherine No. 266 of Earling. She died Sept. 13, 2002, at
Little Flower Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at age 87 years, one month
and 13 days.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Leona
Meier and Viola Chancey, and four brothers, Jerome, Raymond, Omer and Sylvester
Schlies. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Wingert, who resides at Little
Flower Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center; six children, Delores Brokman of
Independence; Ronald (Jodie) of Panama; Alice Wingert of Pueblo, CO; Ralph
(Jeannine) of Earling; Judy (Charles) Turner of Chatsworth, CA and Mary (Bill)
