Reynolds, Glen (1885 - 1986)

The Life Story of Glen M. Reynolds, 100

Glen Milliken Reynolds, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Alta Milliken Reynolds was born Jan. 29, 1885, on a farm near Irwin. He died at the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan, Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1986, just seven days before his 101 birthday.


He attended country school and grew to adulthood on his parents farm. On Feb. 10, 1915, he married Ilo G. Shelby at Irwin. Two sons were born to this union. After they were married, they made their home on a farm west of Irwin. Later, they purchased the grocery store and meat market in Irwin, at which time they moved into town. While living in Irwin, he served as Postmaster from 1929 until 1934. They then bought The Dunlap farm, which they farmed for years, before returning to Irwin and operating a drug store.


In 1946, they moved to CA, where he worked in a large restaurant for 17 1/2 years. In 1963, they returned to Irwin to retire. Mrs. Reynolds died Nov. 22, 1966. He continued to make his home in Irwin until 1975, when he became a resident of the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan. This has been his home since that time.
In addition to his wife Ilo, he was preceded in death by one son Gale; two brothers, Joe and Homer; and one sister, Ethel. He is survived by his son, Keith of Sacramento, CA; two grandaughters, Gayle and Gloria Reynolds; nieces, nephews and other relatives.


Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 25, 1986 at the Pauley Funeral Home in Harlan with Jeff Nielsen of Christ Church Christian officiating.


Burial was in the Oak Hill cemetery, Irwin with Normal Mickelson, Danny Mickelson, Normal Richards, Peter Steenhusen, Clark Ahrenholtz and Howard Mickelson serving as casket bearers.

Blum, LeVerne  (1915 - 1983)

LeVerne Blum was born in Defiance, Iowa on April 8, 1915. His father was John P. Blum and his mother, Elizabeth Rueschenberg. Lucille Wilwerding was born in Earling, Iowa, on November 9, 1922. Her father was John C. Wilwerding and her mother, Clara (Strauel) Thiele.


LeVerne and Lucille were married on May 21, 1946 at Earling, where they resided until July of 1949. At this time, they purchased a small service station and a house in Panama. Verne operated the business titled Verne's Standard Service for about three years, then added a large cement block building. He served on the town council and was a member of the fire department. Lucille has been a member of the fire department. Lucille has been a postal employee since 1957. On July 26, 1980, she was appointed Postmaster of Panama.


Verne and Lucille have four children. Judy graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing and is an R.N. She works part-time at Marian Health Center at Sioux City. She married Steve Jauron, a State Conservation Officer. They have four children and live in Sgt. Bluff, Iowa.


Dan graduated from Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Medicene. He is a resident at the Mayo Clinic, and in May 1984 will be a specialist in Ear, Nose and Throat. Dan married Linda Hillabrand, and they have five children. They live at Rochester, Minnesota.


Doug attended Creighton and UNO and served as a member of the Omaha police force for three years. He is now a computer analyst employed at Mutual of Omaha. He married Marcia Wesely, who is a social worker. They have one daughter, Kelli, and live in Omaha.


Jacalyn was born in December 1962. She graduated from St. Mary's Regional School and Harlan High School. She is attending the College of St. Mary's in Omaha, Nebraska. In October of 1982, Verne retired and sold the business to Terry and Sandy Tremel. It is now known as Tremel's Garage. LeVerne passed away on March 5, 1983.

Croft, Russell Fred (1906 - 1982)

Russell Fred Croft, son of Fred Oscar and Ethel Mae Schaffer Croft, was born March 30, 1906 on a farm near Kirkman. He attended the country school and graduated from Kirkman high school. He then worked with his father building roads for Shelby co. and later became an employee for the county.

On March 30, 1928, he married Hazel Augusta Ruhs in Kirkman. Two daughters, Barbara and Carolyn, were born to this union. After their marriage, they made their home in Kirkman, where he was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Shelby co. the next 42 years. After he retired in 1971, the Crofts continued to make their home in Kirkman. On March 30, 1981, they were privileged to celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary. He died at St. Joseph's hospital, Omaha, on Saturday, Jan. 30, 1982, at the age of 75 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandchild, Debra. He is survived by his wife, Hazel of Kirkman; his two daughters, Barbara (Mrs. Arlo) Petersen of Bennett, and Carolyn (Mrs. Ray) Peraldo of Hundred, W.V.; five grandchildren, Rickey, Larry, Lonny and Cindy Petersen and John Peraldo; five great grandchildren, Chad, Jennifer, Adam, Erin and Lisa Petersen; two brothers, Lester of Omaha, Neb. and Lafe of Harlan; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at Pauley Funeral Home in Harlan on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1982 with the Rev. Leon Wallace of the Kirkman United Methodist church officiating and Mr. Dowayne LaPorte assisting.

Burial was in the Rose Hill cemetery in Kirkman with John Paulsen, Larry Petersen, Rickey Petersen, Nels Block, Jr., Gerald Conrad and Lonny Petersen serving as casketbearers.

Kramer, Cecelia (Schechinger) - 1896-1981

Cecelia Kramer, 85

EARLING - Mrs. Cecelia Kramer of Earling died Saturday at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan.

Services for Mrs. Kramer, 85, were held Monday morning at St. Joseph's Catholic Church here. Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery, Defiance.

She is survived by three sons - Frank, Jr. of Mesa, Ariz., Gerald of Harlan, and Norbert of Omaha; seven daughters - Irene (Mrs. Dale) Friesen of Council Bluffs, Lillian (Mrs. Leo) Schaben of Harlan, Rita (Mrs. Verdy) Klocke of Cascade, Ia., Leona (Mrs. Joe) Bissen of Clarinda, Mary Alice (Mrs. Francis) Heese of Earling, and Theresa (Mrs. Tom) Grote and Dolores (Mrs. Bill) Fuhs, both of Portsmouth.

Also, one brother, Al Schechinger of Harlan; 70 grandchildren, and 68 great grandchildren.

Pauley Funeral Home handled the arrangements in Harlan.

Petersen, Laura (1890 - 1981)

Laura Grace, daughter of George W. and Elizabeth Hixon Ickes, was born Dec. 30, 1890, at Shelby, Iowa, the youngest of 11 children. She died May 7, 1981, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, having attained the age of 90 years.

She received her education in the shelby area schools and lived at home until her marriage to Chris Petersen on Aug. 6, 1913, at Council Bluffs. They made their home in Shelby, Persia, and Manilla where Chris was employed as manager in a ..."
