CHAPTER XXVII - MILITARY HISTORY (CONT'D)

An investigation of the nativity of a large majority of the above named soldiers shows that eleven were born in Ohio, eight in New York, ten in Indiana, five in Pennsylvania, five in Illinois, two in Maryland, and one each in Iowa, Connecticut, Michigan, Maine, Missouri, Virginia, Ireland and France, Martin Obrecht having been born in the last named county.

It is interesting to know that Privates Jonathan Custer, Christian Hack, Perry Hack, Henry Custer and James L. Trenor enlisted where the City Hotel, now known as Hotel Harlan, stands. The oldest volunteer was Peter H. Longcor, forty-five years of age, and the youngest Hiram Simmons, who was but sixteen at time of enlistment. The Longcors were father and son.
