The following is Joseph's obit typed just as it appeared:
Death claimed one of the beloved citizens and early pioneers on Tuesday
afternoon at 4:45 o'clock when the summons came to Mr. Joseph Behrendt at his
home, after a lingering illness of five years.
Mr. Behrendt was born in Germany on Feb. 25, 1852 and died May 28th, 1929 at
the age of 77 years, 3 months and 3 days.
In April, 1875 he was united in marriage to Maria Wyland. To this union eight
children were born. Mrs. Regina Heinzelmeier, who resides in Rockyford, Alt.,
Canada, Mrs. Mary Hein, who preceded him in death two and one half years ago,
Mrs. Rosalia Blum, who also preceded her father in death 12 years ago, Mrs.
Anna Kelly, who lives at Woodbine, Mrs. Elizabeth Kohl, who lives at Earling,
John and Joseph Behrendt and Mrs. Theresia Schafer of this community.
Mr. Behrendt came to this community in January 1882 from Chicago, where he
worked until spring, when he came to Shelby County, Iowa, and settled at
Westphalia. In October of the same year, his wife and three children also
came to this country.
In 1892, Mr. and Mrs. Behrendt came to Panama and resided on the farm for
eleven years. In 1903 they retired from farm life and purchased a home in
Panama, where they have since resided.
Mr. Behrendt leaves to mourn his departure his loving wife, Maria, four
daughters and two sons, namely: Mrs. Regina Henzelmeier, Mrs. Anna Kelly,
Mrs. Elizabeth Kohl, Mrs. Therisia Schafer, John and Joseph Behrendt,
forth_three grand children, twenty_four great grand children, one brother,
John Behrendt of Marion Junction, S. D., one half sister, Mrs. W. C. Smith of
Cicero, Ill., two half brothers, Peter and Albert Behrendt of Lansing, Mich.
Funeral services were held in St. Mary's church on Friday morning at 9
o'clock, Rev. M. B. Schiltz officiating. The pall bearers were John Sullivan,
Joseph Leuschen, Martin Schechinger Sr., John Reinig, Nick Kenkel and Peter
Gau. The remains were laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Amonth the out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral were Mr.
and Mrs. J. U. Kelly and children of Woodbine, Mr. and Mrs. Kohl and
daughter, Helen, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gaul and children, Miss Rose
Heinzelmeier, Mr. Henry Eckerman, Mr. and Mrs. August Eckerman, the Misses
Mary, Cecilia, Catherine and Elizabeth Schleimer, all of Defiance, Mr. and
Mrs. John Pitch and son Edward and George, Henry, and Edward Hein of
Portsmouth, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lux, Mr. Wm. Blum and Mr. John Bissen of
Earling, Mr and Mrs. Jos. Goetzinger, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Fromm, Mr. Fred Gau
and Mr. Nick Kenkel of Defiance, Mr. and Mrs. John Hawn, Mr. Newt Roundy, Mr.
and Mrs. John Robertson of Woodbine, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kelly of Harlan, Mr.
and Mrs. Wm Bruck and Mr. Henry Greiner of Portsmouth and Mr. Vitus
