January 9, 1896: Lillis Obit. DEATH COMES SUDDENLY TO JOHN LILLIS. While on His Way Home He Falls in the Street and Death Ensues Almost Instantly-His Demise a Shock to His Friends. Death came quickly and unexpectedly to John Lillis last evening, and the announcement of his sudden demise will come as a shock to his many friends and acquaintances in Davenport. For sometime past, Mr. Lillis had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Joseph F Volz, residing at 616 east Sixth street, and after partaking of supper there last evening, walked down town with his son-in-law, Mr. Volz. He was apparently in his usual health and neither himself nor his immediate relatives had any intimation that he was so soon to succumb to the inevitable. While returning home about 8 o'clock, he tottered and fell upon the sidewalk on Case street, between Iowa and LeClaire. Two young men, J.F. McCabe and N.W. Nelson, were a short distance behind him and seeing him fall, ran to his assistance. A glance revealed the distressing fact that he was in the throes of death, and in a twinkling almost the spark of life left its moral tenement. It being apparent that he was beyond medical aid, word was sent to the station and in response to the summons the body was removed to Halligan's undertaking establishment. The remains were there examined by Coroner McCartney, who confirmed what had been apparent-that Mr. Lillis was beyond all earthly aid.
John Lillis was one of the oldest and best known residents of Davenport, this city having been his home for nearly half a century. He was born in County Clare, Ireland, June 9, 1831, and came to America in 1842. After a residence of several years, he came to Davenport in 1851 and shortly after engaged in the grocery business. This he continued until eight years ago when he retired in favor of his son, William M Lillis. Subsequently he was engaged in the commission business in Chicago for several years, but returned to Davenport sometime ago, making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Volz, the greater portion of the time. At various times he has filled positions of municipal trust, having been city clerk in 1867 and 1868 and also having served as a member of the council. The deceased is survived by four children-William M Lillis, Mrs. T.F. Halligan and Mrs. J.F. Volz of this city and Mrs. M.J. Kinnally of Chicago. He is also survived by his aged mother, now past her ninetieth year, who lives with his brother, Michael, at Long Grove. A postmortem was held this morning by Dr. McCartney and it was found that fatty degeneration of the heart was the cause of Mr. Lillis' death. Source: Daily Times, Davenport, Scott, Iowa.

September 19, 1896: Killian Obit. KILLIAN A PIONEER GONE. Mrs. Mary Irwin Killian Passes Away Last Night. Born in Roscommon, Ireland, in 1807, She Attained the Age of Eighty-Nine Years-A Resident of Davenport Since 1842-A Beautiful Life-The Funeral. Last evening at 8:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.T. O'Meara, 212 west Sixth street, occurred the death of Mrs. Mary Irwin Killian of senility, in the eighty-ninth year of her age. Her demise is a shock to her host of friends in this city where she has lived for the past forty-two years. The advent of death was sudden although anticipated. The deceased, although a hearty and robust old lady, had for the past several weeks showed evidence of a rapid decline. She went recently to retire at an unusually early hour, complaining of feeling tired. Shortly after, eating supper last night the old lady retired to her room. Nothing caused alarm to her daughter over her early retiring since it had become a usual thing for Mrs. Killian to go to bed immediately after supper. Along about 8 o'clock one of the children said that she thought grandma was calling. Her daughter, Mrs. O'Meara, went into the hall to the foot of the stairs and heard a moan. Hurrying up the stairs she found her mother in a state of collapse. She lapsed into unconsciousness and passed away in about twenty minutes. A physician was summoned immediately and found on arriving that nothing could be done. He announced that her death was caused by senility and the rapid breaking down of the tissue attendant upon such great age.Mary Irwin Killian, relict of the late Daniel Killian, who passed away eleven years ago, was born in Roscommon county, Ireland on August 15, 1807. As a girl she was acquainted with the great minds then prominent in Irish affairs, and as an old lady was wont to tell of the early days of the century, its great men, the struggles of her race for national freedom and of the great days which followed the defeats of the last century. She was married to Daniel Killian in Ireland several years before starting for America.
On her first arrival in the United States she settled at Providence, R.I., where she remained for three years. In 1842 she came to Davenport, where she has since resided. March 22, 1897: Purcell Obit. Patrick Purcell Falls Into the Shadow Land Before His Own Door. Death came suddenly just as he had long expected, to Patrick Purcell, the well known citizen and former member of the police force of this city, Saturday night. Mr. Purcell was stricken on the street, but he lived long enough to be taken to his home, where he died half an hour later. The deceased had been out to accompany his sister-in-law to her home and was returning to his home on the crest of Farnam street between Ninth and Tenth streets. He had just crossed the street from the west side and was passing the gate of W.P. Halligan's home when he was seen to stagger and fall up against the gate, which, swinging open under the weight, allowed him to fall heavily to the brick walk, where he struck on his head, cutting it somewhat. Friends hastened to his side and found that although he was suffering greatly, he was able to recognize them. He was assisted to arise, and he summoned up enough strength to walk to his own home, about 200 feet away, with the aid of a man supporting him on either side. A half an hour later he was dead. During the interim between his sudden prostration and his final decease, Mr. Purcell spoke lightly to his friends, expressing the wish that he was ready to make the journey over the shadowland, cautioning all those present to remember him with the suffrages of their prayers. The end came without apparent pain, or any great sense of physical distress.
The cause of death is supposed to have been heart failure. The deceased had been under treatment and had a spell of sickness and weakness while on his way home from the caucuses early in the week. He recovered from it and thought it nothing serious. On this fatal Saturday evening, however, he realized his condition, as it evidenced by the conversation recounted above. He knew that the end would come suddenly and he kept himself constantly prepared for the worst. He had been growing steadily worse for some time, the weight of years beginning to tell upon his naturally rugged constitution for he was over seventy-three years of age. Deceased was born in Kilkenny, Ireland. He came to Davenport in 1852 and has made it his home ever since. He was appointed a police officer during the mayoralty of Hon. Jere Murphy in 1873 and continued as a member of the force until 1889 when he resigned. Since his retirement from the force he has done little if any work, having been of a saving disposition all of his life thereby gathering together enough property to keep him comfortable.
Mr. Purcell was a devout Catholic and an exemplary socialist, being a constant attendant upon the various offices of the Sacred Heart Cathedral. He is survived by his second wife, Bridget, and one son, W.J. Purcell. The funeral will occur Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock from the late residence with solemn high mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral.
