Scott County Ancestors:

PHOTOS FROM THE SCHWIEN FAMILY

This is a collection of family pictures and history, a joint effort of Schwien descendants, Julie Mathisen Nagle and Brent Hemphill with a special "thank-you" to Leona Schwien Mathisen, Irene Rock Zindel and Helen Jugenheimer Kay who tucked these pictures away for years, not knowing what they would do with them. The collection is dedicated to and for the benefit of the descendants of Asmus Hinrich Schwien and Maria Dorothea Steen Schwien who immigrated to Scott County, Iowa in 1856,  from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany aboard the Elbe.

The earliest of these photos were taken around 1870 when Charles Schwien, father of Leona Mathisen Schwien, was 3 years old and most were before 1888 when Gustav and Charles set out to seek their fortune in O'Brien County Iowa. Most of these photos were put in albums around that time and have remained there until this year of 2008.

Both Gus and Charley, as they were known, were able to purchase farms of their own in O'Brien County. Charley's second farm that he and his wife Laura Trojahn Schwien purchased in 1918 is still owned by his grandchildren, Jerry Douglas Schwien and Janis Annette Schwien Schnabel.

Christian Schwien, 1824-1893

Christian Schwien was the eldest child of [Asmus] Henry Schwien and Maria Dorothea Steen Schwien. He was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany on November 7, 1824  and there he married Maria Dorothea Osborne [or Ausborn], also of Schleswig-Holstein, in 1854. Maria Dorothea Osborne was born March 5, 1824 in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Christian died August 21, 1893 in Scott County, Iowa; Maria Dorothea Osborne Schwien died September 19, 1881 in Liberty Township, Scott County, Iowa. Both are buried in Dixon Cemetery, Dixon, Scott County, Iowa.

"From History of Scott County, Iowa 1882 Chicago: Interstate Publishing Co."

Christian Schwien, born in Holstein, Germany, Nov. 7, 1824, was a son of Henry Schwien, also of that country. Christian was married there to Mary D. Ausborn in 1854. They have had six children, four living, viz.: Emma (married Henry Reinhold), Rudolph, Gustav and Charley. The subject of this memoir was educated in the common schools of his native country. Soon after his marriage he came to the United States and located in Davenport, Iowa, where he remained five years. He came to Liberty Township in 1859, rented land until 1866, then bought a farm of 80 acres in section 36. He now owns 120 acres of fine farming land; has a large barn 36 x 44 feet, and a good house on his farm. His wife died Sept. 19, 1881; his mother died in Davenport, Dec. 8, 1881. Mr. Schwien has been school director three years.

This photo is a tin type of Christian and [Maria] Dorothea Schwien and their four surviving children. Front, left: Dorothea holding Charles Schwien, Christian and Rudolph Schwien. Back, left: Gustav Schwien and Emma Schwien [Reinhold].

Children of Christian and Maria Dorothea Schwien:

     1. Johanna, born 1854 in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is known that she immigrated from Germany and assumed she died before the above picture was taken although no records of her death have been found, only the mention of four living children in the article on Christian Schwien in 1882. Johanna would have been 16 years of age at the time of this picture.

     2. Emma K. [Reinhold], born in 1857 in Scott County, Iowa; died March 14, 1912 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa.

     3. Rudolph, born February 5, 1859 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa; died May 31, 1934 in Hickory Grove Township, Scott County, Iowa.

     4. Gustav Schwien, born July 1861 in Scott County, Iowa; died after 1925.

     5. Charles Schwien, born June 18, 1867 in Scott County, Iowa; died September 30, 1949 in Hartley, O'Brien County, Iowa.

     6. There was one more child referenced in the article about Christian, "they had six children, four living," so probably one child died in infancy or early childhood.

A report on the death of Herman Reinhold from the Davenport Republican, Tuesday, September 13, 1904:

HEART PARALYSIS PROBABLE CAUSE-

HERMAN REINHOLD DROPS DEAD ON STREETS OF DAVENPORT-

WILL HOLD INQUEST TODAY-

Dead Man Had Disposed of His Business and Was Planning to Go West for His Health

-
An inquest will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock over the remains of Herman Reinhold, who dropped dead yesterday afternoon shortly after three o'clock while walking on the west side of Harrison street between Second and Third streets.  Death, which is supposed to have been due to paralysis of the heart, occurred almost instantly, the stricken man being assisted into the office of the real estate dealers, Stueben & Bush and Louis Rieck, the tailor, at 224 Harrison street by Thos. Simonsen, who was near him when he fell.  Dr. Kemmerer arrived on the scene and was joined shortly by Dr. Matthey but pronounced Mr. Reinhold to be dead.  Life had all probability become extinct before he fell to the walk.  The body was taken in charge by Constable Rumsey and was removed to the home, 518 West Third street, the old Ohlshausen residence opposite Turner hall.  Mr. Reinhold was a locksmith with his office at 313 Harrison street.  He had disposed of his business and expected to leave shortly for the west for his health.  He was 50 years and 6 months of age and had he lived until March 25, 1905, would have been 51 years of age.  He was born at Borstel, near Hamburg, Germany, and came to this country while still a young man.  He was employed as an ironsmith for some years at Walcott and Long Grove, coming to Davenport about thirty-two years ago.  He was a promineut member of the Davenport Turnegemainde.  He was an expert locksmith and on Saturday last disposed of his business to Martens & Willey.  He is survived by his wife and daughters, Misses Ella, Hilda and Frieda and Mrs. Meta Emery of Davenport.  One son, Gustave, also remains to mourn his loss.  The date for the funeral had not been set last evening....

Children of Emma Schwien and Herman Reinhold are:
     1. Christian Reinhold, born 1878 in Iowa; died, probably before Herman’s death in 1904.
     2. Meta Reinhold, birth year unknown; died before 1925.
     3.  Hilda Reinhold, born September 29, 1882 in Iowa; died before 1958.

Frances Linder was a teacher at what was then known as the "Old Stone School," located just south of Territorial Road going East from Argo corners towards LeClaire.  LeClaire Township, Scott County, Iowa. William met Frances when she was teaching there and boarding with his parents. Sons Robert and Fred were born here.  Later they moved and rented a farm east of Eldridge and north of F45 where Helen, Harold, Dorothy and Frances were born. The house has been torn down and in 1999 the only original building was a barn.   A fourth of a mile north and 1 mile west is the site of Lincoln #7 school where all the children attended. The Zabels across the road and Amhofs across the field were important neighbors to the family.
