Please note that the print on this copy is very small and very difficult to read. Every effort has been made to transcribe this article and the surnames correctly. There is also another article printed the same day by another Davenport Newspaper (The Daily Times). When I have completed transcription of this copy I will compare notes with the Times copy. I notice they are a little different and this copy does not have all the same names. I do not yet have a complete copy of the Times article --Cathy Joynt Labath
Davenport Democrat And Leader
Davenport, Scott, Iowa
July 25, 1918CONTINGENT IS LARGEST SINCE DRAFT STARTED
Farewell Demonstration to Be Given Selects and They Entrain
CITY IS SENDING 528
Men Will Reach Camp Pike Friday Night and SaturdayThe largest national army contingent called from davenport and Scott county since the war started, will begin moving tonight for the army camp. The Scott county selects will depart at 3 p.m. over the C.B. & Q. for Camp Pike, Little Rock, Ark. and will be followed at 8 a.m. Friday by the Davenport contingent.
The contingents numbering 652 men will travel in special trains arriving at the training camp Friday night and Saturday morning. The county is sending away 124 men tonight and the city will bid farewell tomorrow to 528. The Clinton county contingent will meet the Scott county contingent here tonight and the two county selects will travel in one train out of Davenport. Over 400 men will be aboard the special from the two counties.
City Men Reporting.
The Davenport selects started reporting to the respective boards at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. After a roll call and the arranging of the necessary paper work. In connection with the normal induction into service, the men were excused until 7 o'clock tomorrow morning. Captains and lieutenants were named and the selects formed into squads prepatory to the entrainment.
Plan Demonstration
The Scott county men will report again at 6:20 o'clock this afternoon and will parade through the business section headed by a band and companies of Home Guards before entraining. A farewell demonstration for the county men in charge of the Scott County Council of Defense will be repeated again Friday morning for the city men before they depart.
Scores Transferred.
Scores of Davenport and Scott county registrants listed in this call are residing elsewhere and will be inducted by other boards. This served to decrease the number of men ordered to entrain here from 676 to 662. The local boards are sending 20 men from other boards to offset the 30 or more Davenporters transferred to other boards.
Men Drill
The Scott county registrants reported Thursday afternoon and after a roll call were given preliminary instructions in military drill by George Weeks, who has been drilling the city selects for the last two weeks. One man, whose name could not be learned, fainted.
Travel in Day Coaches
No Pullman will be furnished the selects, local boards were notified today, and the men will be compelled to make the trip of 681 miles in day coaches. Both contingents will be on the road a day and a night. Shortage of equipment owing to the movement of troops throughout the county is the reason assigned for the lack of Pullmans.

Daily Times
Davenport, Scott, Iowa
Thursday, July 25, 1918Within the next 24 hours Scott County will give 676 more of its select young men to the United States for military service. These men will be sent to Camp Pike, Little Rock, Ark., as members of the national army.
The entrainment plans call for the 128 registrants of the Scott County board to leave Davenport this evening via the Burlington system. Four coaches will be reserved for the local contingent and these will be attached to the special train which will be run from Clinton. Young men of this board met at the courthouse Wednesday afternoon for final instructions and received their badges and allotment of cigars and cigarets [sic]. They will report at the courthouse again this evening and will march from that place to the Burlington depot. Petersen's band will act as escort. Home guards will assist in the entertainment.
City Men In Morning
There will be a special train provided for the registrants of Davenport local boards Nos. 1 and 2, when they depart for Camp Pike tomorrow morning. The men of board 1 will meet at the Masonic Temple while those of board 2 will meet at the Armory building. With the Petersen band and Boy Scouts as flagbearers, 284 selectment of board No. 1 will march through the business district and 264 registrants of board No. 2 will "fall in" during the march with the boy scout's bugle, fife and drum corps as their escort. After a procession through the main business district, the contingents will entrain at the Burlington depot. Home guards will be on duty to prevent delays to the marchers and to enable a speedy entrainment.
Final instructions, together with announcement of officials to be in charge of the various squads, were to be given this afternoon when the men assembled, board No. 1 men at Masonic hall and board No. 2 men at the old Armory building.
Plans call for the men to be excused after the session this afternoon until tomorrow morning, when they will report at their respective assembly places."
The remainder of the article talks about the number of men leaving Davenport being slightly lower than quota - because numerous registrants are leaving from elsewhere. The end of the text says "The special trains are expected to reach Camp Pike in about 24 hours. At St. Louis, Mo., the trains will be transferred from the Burlington lines to the Iron Mountain system.

About 120 selectmen from Scott county will leave at 10 o'clock Tuesday evening from Davenport for Lytle, Ga., to join other contingents at Camp Forrest. The call for Scott county includes 49 men from Board No. 1, 51 men from board No. 2 and 21 men from the Scott county board. Several of these men will go to Camp Forrest from other places.
