Page 1THE EXEMPTS. - The crowd around Commissioner Thompson's office was not so large yesterday, and it will probably grow smaller every day. The firemen came up yesterday afternoon, and proved their exemption. Thero are about one hundred of them in all. There are still some applying for exemption, on the ground that they are aliens. The questions we published the other day are propounded in every case, besides another, viz: Do you acknowledge yourself a subject of (naming the power whence the individual came,) and do you demand its protection?
WHEREAS, Persons who have taken out papers, declaring their intention of becoming citizens of the United States, and now residents of this county, who have been before the lion. John W. Thompson, U. S. Commissioner for enrolling persons subject to be drafted into the armies of the United States, in this county, and have claimed exemption from draft on the ground that they were not citizens, claiming the protection of a foreign power; and
WHEREAS, It is our first duty in this trying hour of our country's peril to assist those who are willing to defend the Union, in preference to those who are not: therefore be it Resolved, by the City Council of the city of Davenport, That no person who has declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and has now or hereafter shall claim exemption from draft into the armies of the Union, shall be employed or paid to serve or labor for the city of Davenport during the present war.

Page 1SEVERAL of our citizens have requested us to publish the names of all those who have claimed exemption from draft. We cannot see any necessity for such a proceeding. or the possible good to result from it. If a man is physically incapacitated for military duty he certainly should claim his exemption, and not wait for the inspecting surgeon to throw him out after he is placed in a regiment. We don't think it best to publish the list.
EDITORS OF Domicrat & News: - Mr. Dennis Moran of 5th ward, city of Davenport, complains that he is published in your paper as asking exemption, on the ground that he is a British subject. In this you are in error. Mr. M. obtained his exemption because he was over forty five years of age.
Sept. 5th 1862, Reapt'y Yours,
JNO. W. THOMPSON
All right Dennis. It is probably some sneak from the country whose name appears in the the list. The name of John McCormic also appeared in the list. This is not John McCormick, the Engineer who resides in the 5th ward.
COMING TO THEIR SENSES. - The prompt publication of the "sneak list" in this paper has had one good effect. It has brought several aliens to their senses. On Saturday not less than twenty-one of that class of people presented themselves at the Commissioner's office and took back their papers like men, declaring that they would not subject themselves to any such ignominy. They did not fully understand what they were doing when they thus turned their backs upon Uncle Sam. We forgive them; the people will forgive them. We advise others to turn from the error of their ways and once more stand up to the pledge of manhood - once more declare their noble intentions to be men among men. Take it back all you who have taken the false step. Take it back and declare anew that you came to this country and wedded her as your bride, and renew the oath before God and man that you will defend her till death sunders the sacred bond. Let no one hesitate. As you value your happiness, as you esteem your manhood, as you hope to be respected among your fellow men, go back and erase the foul blot that now stands against you and which if permitted to stand will follow you like the curse of Cain. Go and redeem your honor while there is chance - go to-day.
THE SNEAK LIST CONTINUED. - We this morning continue the publication of the names of the cowardly sneaks who claim protection from foreign governments to avoid serving the country of their adoption:
