Dr. John W. Watzek was born in Krubitz, Austria , September 28, 1856, being named after his father, John W. Watzek, who died when the son was very young. Dr. Watzek received a limited education in Austria, attending school during the winter months only and taking a partial course in the gymnasium. He came to America, in 1871, at the age of twenty-three years and settled first in Philadelphia.
After taking a course at Wyoming Seminary at Kingston, Pennsylvania, he began the study of medicine in Hahnemann Medical College of Philadel phia. He afterward came to Iowa, entered the State University at Iowa City and was graduated from that institution in 1881. After his graduation he located in Sigourney, Iowa, where he practiced medicine for four years and then came to Davenport in 1885.
On July 8, 1885, Dr. Watzek was married to Miss Nellie D., daughter of Charles Harlan, who belonged to an old and prominent family of Sigourney, Iowa. To this union three children have been born, Harlan, Aubrey and John W., all of whom are living.
Dr. Watzek is a Knight Templar, Royal Arch Mason, a member of the Iowa State Homeopathic Medical Association and chairman of the section on sanitary science.
A self-made man in every respect, he has gained a strong hold upon popular favor in Davenport, has become well known in other portions of the State and is a recognized leader among homeopathic practitioners.
